Principles of Teaching and Learning
1. Teachers' knowledge of the subject matter is essential to the implementation of importantteaching tasks
Of course, you cant teach what you dont know, and you will not know if you dont understand what you
are about to teach. Precisely, all of us who conduct lectures should be prepared as to what you are going to do.
Being an effective teacher knows what they are saying in front of the learners with an appropriate teaching
strategies and readiness to spill out a very good and motivated teaching-leaning action. In other words, there
is already the presence of foundation and concepts on the subject matter for a teacher to deliver well in
establishing knowledge and most important is to inculcating adequate information in the minds of the
learners.
2. Active involvement of the learner enhances learningAs Confucius said I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. Learning is an active
process thus it requires involvement of knowledge, skills, and attitude. Some of the methods that encourage
active learning in the classroom are: discussion, practice sessions, structured exercises, team projects, and
research projects. Lets take for example in classroom settings, lectures about concepts should be first
administered so as when going to the actual procedure, a learner have already the idea and stock knowledge
on how to carry out a task. Likewise in nursing profession, these can be applied in RLEs or the Related
Learning Experience where classroom lectures before clinical exposures are made. But there are also times
that exposures are first experienced before the lecture, it depends on the situation. Active learning is a hands-
on skill, that an individual will be fastened with experiences for them to enhance their competencies. As to
what William James said that teaching without an accompanying experience is like filling a lamp with water.
Something has been poured in, but the result is not illuminating.
3. Interaction between teachers and students is the most important factor in student motivationand involvement
Interrelationship always produces good results; this is the reason that makes the world go round. Trust,
love, joint relations, married couples, loyalty, employers and employees, family, friends, name it all for it
pertains to what relationship produces. Manifesting a good standing as a teacher to your students, it is must
that you build a strong camaraderie with each other. For them to be motivated, both of you must learn to trust
in terms of the concepts you teaches and be open to corrections and improvements to enhance more of what
previous experience was laid.
