Congratulaons to our winners Niamh, Kiana, Zoe & Cooper who are pictured below with their individual entries in front of a board displaying all entries. This term we have seen a significant increase in the number of students bringing the latest gadgets and gizmos to school including the very popular “Bey blades” & “fidget spinners”. We would remind parents that these personal belongings are the sole responsibility of students and whilst we do everything we can to manage the use of these precious (and oſten expensive) items, at the end of the day if they are lost broken or mysteriously gone missing there may be very lile we can do to ‘fix it’. Our strong advice is that if an item is considered too precious to lose then it is best leſt at home. At the moment these items are sll allowed to be brought to school. If indeed, we noce that they are causing disrupons to teaching and learning or playground harmony we will reluctantly have to ban them from our school. Last week at our whole school assembly we reminded parents about our policy in relaon to posng videos and photos of students on social media. By all means post as many photos of your child(ren) as you wish. We love to celebrate the achievements of our BPS kids! However, as there are a number of families in our school community who have indicated that their children are not for publicaon, we would kindly ask that you not post any photos or videos of other children without expressed permission of that child’s parent(s). Great job by our very large cohort of 150 Yr 3 and Yr 5 students who sat the NAPLAN exams this week. I was super impressed by the mature and focussed atude of all students in the way in which they undertook this intensive three days of assessment. Whilst the data which we collect from these exams is just one snapshot of the bigger picture of teaching and learning outcomes at our school, it is important to our planning processes for 2018 and beyond. Speaking of 2018 and beyond, a number of parents have asked me about my vision for the school and future directions. New ideas and innovations are certainly on our radar as we work towards a new three year planning cycle commencing in 2018. Whilst I am always happy to meet individually with parents, the most effective form of two way communication and consultation with the wider school community is via our P&C process. If you would like to be part of the conversation about ideas we have in mind for Biddabah P.S. you are very welcome to come along to our meetings. Next meeting will be on Wednesday May 17, from 7.30pm in the school library.

Finally, well done to all of our sports teams who represented our school with passion and pride last week in the areas of Rugby league, Soccer, Hockey and AFL. As coach of the Senior Rugby League team, I couldn’t be prouder of the sportsmanship and effort shown by our boys who, after 3 wins, 1 draw and a narrow loss, just missed the quarter finals of the Knights Knockout. A huge thank you also to all of the parents who supported us on the day with encouragement and transportation. Have a great Week! Steve Gately (Principal)

CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS

School Musical Musical preparations are now in full swing. After hours and hours of singing auditions we have finally cast our soloists for the musical. We would like to thank and congratulate all of our wonderful Stage 3 students who have worked tirelessly auditioning for these positions. The talent we have at Biddabah is truly extraordinary! Drama auditions are still currently underway with a second round of auditions being held as we speak. With over fifty Stage 3 students auditioning for this year’s musical, choosing who will be cast as our main characters has been extremely difficult. We endeavour to make our final decisions by the end of next week. In other musical news, Mrs Dutch and Mrs McEwan met this week with a company who specialise in scaffolding temporary grandstands. We have our fingers crossed that we can create tiered seating at the back of our school hall for all our musical performances this year, thus providing better vision for audience members. Remember to save the last week of Term 3 for our spectacular musical. ‘One in a Minion’ is set to be a smash hit! Mrs McEwan ANZAC DAY GUEST SPEAKER

Biddabah students from Years 3-6 saw Guest Speaker Corporal Dan Gardoll following the Anzac ceremony on Friday Week 1. Corporal Gardoll spoke about his experiences in the Australian and British forces, shared some photographs and spoke about how the Army’s core values can be utilised in schools. These included courage, discipline, respect for others, integrity, loyalty and selfless commitment. When it came to Q&A time, questions ranged from asking him to explain the medals he was wearing through to what was it was like on the first day of training. The audience was very interested in learning about Army life and all it encompasses.

SPORT NEWS

Biddabah girls softball team played their first softball match this season against Wyee. This was the first game for many of the softball girls. Unfortunately, our lack of match experience led to Wyee to secure a solid lead. We were able to score some runs as the game progressed and nerves eased. However this was not enough to catch Wyee and the final score was 21 to Wyee, 7 to Biddabah. The girls all put in a great effort, displaying enthusiasm and great sportsmanship. Mrs Wallace and Mrs Davidson

PSSA Senior Girls Knockout

Last Thursday the 4th of May, the Senior Girls Soccer Team went along to Walker Ovals at Wallsend South to compete in the PSSA knockout competition. In the first Game the girls played Barnsley Public School and won convincingly, 11- 5. The second game saw the girls take on the previous year champions, Wallsend South Public School. They had a talented team and were victorious, defeating us 7 – 0. I would like to thank the girls on their effort, skill and sports-manship. Thank you to the parent volunteers who transported the girls to and from the ovals and special thanks to Mr Gooch who assisted the girls in their game preparation.

Ms Filipcevic

Choral fest

On Wednesday the 3rd of May, "Biddabah Beats" had their first public performance for the year! 55 girls from Years 2-5 walked to the Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre to perform. We put on an amazing performance and came in second place! All of the students represented the school with pride and excellent behaviour! I would like to say huge thank you to all the parents who volunteered and offered to volunteer with transport. It was a fantastic day and luckily the weather (just) held up!

Calling all who love to SING! Next Monday (week 4), the choir will be open for anyone who is interested in joining. This will be your ONLY opportunity to join before the musical. I especially encourage any boys who are interested to come along, have fun singing and make new friends! If this sounds like you, please bring your food and come to Mrs Woods room at the beginning of lunch. See you there!

Mrs Osborn

AFL News

On Friday 5th May Biddabah's girls and boys AFL teams participated in the Paul Kelly Cup competition at Warners Bay. Both teams finished equal second on the day, missing the finals on 'For and Against'. All students should be commended on their exceptional behaviour on the day as well as their development of AFL skills throughout the day.

PEER SUPPORT 2017

Biddabah has commenced our Peer Support lessons this term. The whole school participates in Peer Support for 40 minutes each week and a Year 6 Peer leader facilitates a small group of 6-8 students from Kindergarten to Year 5 who work together through a number of structured activities.

We are working on a module called Promoting Harmony helping us define individual and community values, build relationships and improve decision making skills. Our first session enabled the children to get to know everyone in their group, agreeing on how they will work together and interact cooperatively with others. They also began thinking about what is a value and something they value in themselves.

In our second week of Peer Support, students looked at the notion that what they choose to spend their time on often reflects the values they have. The activities additionally assisted them in identifying ways they care for themselves and others, developing their understanding that you are caring when you notice the feelings and needs of yourself and others. Congratulations to our Year 6 students who are doing a wonderful job in their new role as Peer Support Leaders. Keep up the great work, Biddabah! Mr Harris

Last Thursday, the Boys’ Soccer Team participated in a PSSA Knockout Gala Day, taking on Barnsley and Wallsend South Public Schools. The actual score was 2-2. I would like to thank Mr Knight for offering his training expertise on the day and all those who came to support our impressive team. Well done, boys! Toothbrush Tuesday

Next Tuesday our school leaders will be collecting brand new tooth brushes and tubes of toothpaste to send over to Safe Haven Children’s Home in The Philippines. Due to limited education, poor water quality and easy access to soft drinks, children here have some of the worst tooth decay and dental hygiene in the world. We would like to encourage all Biddabah students to get on board with this charity project. With small acts of kindness and generosity, Biddabah students are learning that they can make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children all over the world. Safe Haven will distribute our toothbrushes and toothpaste to the children living on the Payatas Dumpsite in Manila.

All Welcome!

CANTEEN NEWS

Throughout this year there will be changes made to the food and drink options that are allowed to be sold in the canteen. The changes to the canteen menu come from the NSW Department of Health where steps are being taken to reduce the amount of saturated fats and sugar that are being consumed by children. Paula and I will hold an information session in relation to these changes for the volunteers that do canteen, and also for anyone else that would like to learn more about these changes. The information session will most likely be before the P and C meeting in June. We will let you know about the date and time soon. A reminder, that the beef and chicken burgers are only available on Fridays. They are not available to purchase any other day of the week. Hotdogs and Fairy bread are also not available to order. If you would like to do canteen, please contact Mel Aurisch on 0419 294 046. Alternatively, there’s a roster in the canteen where you can write down your name and contact number.

NB Changes made to the canteen roster after Wednesday will not be reflected in the current newsletter.
