• Be able to use all 4 statistics with a single number set

Activity and Resources Activity and Resources Activity and Resources In writing this week, we are going to create a set of instructions for a procedure – a step-by-step guide for something. The goal is that someone reading your instructions should be able to carry out the task correctly. Your instructions can be on any of the following:

• How to make an Anderson Shelter model (based on our recent task that you may have completed)

• How to do a household chore of your choice (washing the dishes, setting the table – your choice)

• How to create a magic potion (be creative) First of all, you should use link 1 below to download an example of what a good set of instructions looks like. When you download it, you will want to open the file named Example Text A4 – this has a labelled example on the last two pages and should show you what your instructions should look like and include when you are done.

Download the ebook Code Cracking for Beginners (if you haven’t already done so) from Twinkl using the link below.

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t2-or-5630-code-cracking-for-beginners-ebook Read chapters 6 and 7 (pages 35 - 53) and complete the task map shared at the end of this document. Remember that starred tasks are for everyone to complete, and then you can choose your own tasks to complete after that.

This week in maths we are going to do a little bit of work on statistics. There are four different skills to work out and practise and all of the work can be done in your maths jotter. For an overview of the skills, try this video:

Link 1 below provides you with a workbook that contains all the work and instruction you need. The first page explains all four statistics and how to work them out. This is very important to go over a few times if you have not learned it before. Then, the workbook contains practice pages for each statistic – remember to scroll back to the instructions if you get stuck. Finally, there is a challenge page to let you try out all 4 statistics in one number set. The answers are all included to allow you to assess your work.

IMPORTANT – If you have any issues opening or downloading things, just email your teacher for help. Link 2 will be your checklist for when you are finished, so use it to check all the requirements for this piece of writing and aim to include all of them in your work. Links 3 and 4 will help you to understand and practise imperative verbs before you write up your instructions, but they are not as tricky as they might sound. Remember to aim to do your very best – this may seem like a simple piece of writing, but it takes care to include all of the features in the checklist.

purpose (an interview) and use suitable vocabulary for my audience. Success Criteria:

• I can discuss the responsibilities I have now and will have in the future - at home, in school and in the world of work.

• I can research and discuss the general responsibilities that come with jobs and the different training opportunities that I may take in the future.

• I can carry-out research into what I want to do in the future and find relevant information about it which I can use in my interview.

Success Criteria:

• You know what items of food were rationed and the amounts each person/family received on a weekly basis.

• You are able to create an accurate weekly meal plan for yourself during WW2 using the foods that would have been available and compare it to the grid you created in your last activity.

• You can use this knowledge to create a recipe using the ingredients you would have during rationing.

Activity and Resources Activity and Resources Activity and Resources This week’s word list features the ‘gh’ sound, sometimes sounding like ‘f’ and sometimes remaining silent. The list can be found at the bottom of this learning grid. Choose 20 words from the list that you find reasonably challenging. Try to find other common elements of spelling rules within the words, such as double consonants and magic e. Check how many syllables and how many sounds there are in each word. For example: ghastliness – has 3 syllables (ghast-li-ness) and is made of 9 sounds (gh-a-s-t-l-i-n-e-ss). It has gh making a hard g sound and a letter i that sounds like ee. It ends in a double s to form a softer s sound. Practise your words as we normally would in class using your jotter. Once you have copied and

The focus of this activity is your next steps in life (secondary school, work life and beyond)– including the World of Work. The activity is an interview where you will answer questions asked by an interviewer (adult in the house) about your next steps in life. The aim of the task is to get you to think about what you want to do in the future and to get you to think about the skills and talents you have and the qualifications/learning you will need to enable you to achieve the job/career you would like. You have taken part in similar online activities at Tynecastle High School.

1. The first thing to do is look at the interview questions at the bottom of the Learning Grid. You will be answering

In the last grid, you researched the foods you would have during WW2 and the items that were rationed and why. If you haven’t completed this work, you will need to do so to enable you to complete this activity. Task 1 Using the information about rationing, create a Weekly Plan for the meals etc you would eat for a week in WW2. Base your choices on the amount of rations your family would have received if you were living in WW2. Remember to refer to the information you have gathered about what rations each person received – adults, children – to help you plan. Make sure you don’t use more than your family would have had as a ration for the week. Also, some foods were easier to obtain or weren’t rationed e.g. vegetables, so you could use more of these. You can also

practiced the lists, get someone at home to quiz you on your list. Word building – choose ten words and create extensions of these words using common prefixes and suffixes. Check this list with someone else to make sure it is accurate. For example: tough becomes toughening. If you have signed up for Sumdog you can complete spelling games there. Additionally, you can use Doorway speller online from the link below: https://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/activities/speller/

most of the cards in your interview. With cards 5, 6 and 7, only answer one of these based on what training you intend to do in the future for your job.

2. Then carryout any research needed to

collect the information you are going to need and organise your notes ready for your interview.

Take part in the interview – ask someone to be your interviewer and answer the questions clearly, using appropriate vocabulary/language. Remember it is an interview – answer the questions in a respectful and professional manner.

think about the meals that the children in the following videos were given whilst they were evacuees. There are 8 in the series. This is the first one, but you will then be able to find the others from this one.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRt5Mk6V8Gg Once you’ve done this, compare the 2 menu grids that you have created and answer the questions given after the WW2 menu plan on this grid. Task 2 In WW2, people had to be creative with the food they were able to obtain (think about what Lord Woolton encouraged in your comprehension in the last grid) to enable them to have enough food to last the week. Your task is to create and write a recipe for something that you could make in WW2 using the ingredients your family would have. Remember, that you need to write it using the correct structure. Write it in your Writing jotter. It can be a cake, a main meal, a snack etc it’s really up to you. You could adapt a recipe used to-day. Remember, you don’t want to use up all your rations on one thing! If you want, you could make it to see what it tastes like. I have added two examples of WW2 recipes (at the bottom of the learning grid) so you can see some of the things that were made in WW2 to make the most of the food families had and to remind you of what a recipe structure looks like.

Health and Wellbeing Expressive Arts (Art/Music/Drama) RME, Science, Technology L.I - To be able to interpret and understand food labelling systems in order to be able to make healthy food choices.

L.I – To show depth in an image through detail, line boldness and perspective, and to develop an idea to create something new.

LI – I can name the components of a circuit and recognise the symbol for each component. SC

Success Criteria:

• Identify the main food groups on the British traffic light system

• Identify and understand information presented on other types of food label (with no traffic light)

• Be able to identify nutritional information per serving and per 100g to be able to make comparisons between foods

Success Criteria:

• Choose drawing tools appropriately

• Follow steps to construct image

• Make adjustments to a 3D structure to create a new, similar object

• To create a basic electrical circuit (interactive) including the following components, a bulb, a battery, a switch and wires.

• To find and learn the symbol that represents the above components.

• To test my knowledge of electricity.

Activity and Resources Activity and Resources Activity and Resources As part of the learning we engage in around food and healthy eating, it is important to be able to use the information available to use when making choices about what and how much we eat.

First, use link 1 below to access and read through a PowerPoint about the British labelling system. This is all summarised in the poster from link 2. Then, using link 3, have a look at food labels at home and try to find a variety of different types of foods. Think about what the label is telling you – is it clear about what counts as a serving? Then, for more detail, use links 4 and 5 to learn about looking at nutritional values tables, another way of labelling food to allow people to know exactly what they are eating and what it contains.

This lesson will link with your writing task for the week. We are learning to draw a cuboid structure – this garage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx2TmSHLKw8 The main thing to focus on is the first four lines for the outline of the foundation – they should be two pairs of parallel lines. Keeping this accurate makes everything else much easier.

Use the following link. Work your way through the challenges at the bottom. Once you have completed the challenges all the components on the bottom right of the screen should light up. You can then have a go at the quiz. Note – The characters are a bit odd looking. Also please do not give your real name. I called myself Bob and it worked fine. http://www.learningcircuits.co.uk/ STEM Challenge LI - to design and make a structure that will hold my weight. SC

• I have designed my structure.

• I have made my structure based on my design.

• I have made any improvements I need to make.

Activity and Resources The James Dyson Foundation (an engineering company famous for its vacuum cleaners) have released some challenge/experiment cards. Most of the experiments use things you may have around the house. Here is a link to the cards.

Pay close attention to the techniques for shading and the shadow on the ground around the shed that adds a sense of depth to the image. Once we have mastered it, we will use the frame and techniques to draw an Anderson shelter to add to our finished written instructions for how to assemble the model. Remember that you will draw what your model looks like so that it matches the instructions, so try to keep it matching the model you have made. Don’t worry if you are writing about something else – you can still learn this drawing skill as the ability to create box structures comes in very useful in a lot of art work.

https://www.jamesdysonfoundation.co.uk/resources/challenge-cards.html If you would like to try any of the experiments please take care and make sure you ask an adult for help if the card tell you to. This week’s STEM challenge! If you would like to try the Engineering Challenge 08 – Cardboard Chair, please follow the link and scroll through to find the challenge card. I am going to try it too! If you don’t have card maybe you could try other materials you may have around the house, for example, newspaper (rolled up it can be quite strong). Tips Make a plan. Draw your design first or even make a prototype (a small version) perhaps made of paper. If it does not work, see if you can work out where it went wrong, can you make any improvements? If you don’t have enough card, perhaps make a small chair and see if it holds a toy/weight. I would love to see your finished chairs if you can email a pictures of them to me. Please don’t worry if you can’t. I will include a picture of my attempt in next week’s Home Learning Grid! [email protected] Have fun!

Hi everyone.

224 × 225 Hope last week went well and you are now back into the routine of your Learning Grids and learning from home. It is a very strange way of working for us all and we think you have adapted really quickly. TEAM ACCOUNTS - IMPORTANT We want to make sure that you get any messages that we send out to the team or individuals and we plan to use the Teams Account to do that. We need to make sure that you are all checking your Team Accounts at least once a day – if you can check it more then that’s great. We don’t want you to miss out on anything that is important to your learning. Also - We still have a few people who haven’t appeared in Teams – can you try and join your Team as it is good to have discussions, see work etc there. If you have any issues let us know, our email addresses are below. Remember, if you want to, you can share any work you have done with us using Teams or email it to us. We love seeing and hearing about the things you are creating/making/doing with the tasks on the grids. We have also included Mrs Latimer’s address for the work she has included in the grid.

Activity and Resources In the last grid, you were learning how to say the time using 24 hour time. If you haven’t covered this work, please complete it before undertaking this work as it will help you with the following task. Main Task In this task you are going to learn how to say the time in French using – half past, quarter past, quarter to, minutes past and minutes to the hour.

Topping – sugar & mixed spice, if desired

Method

1. Mash or sieve the potatoes until light and floury; do not add milk.

2. Sift the flour & baking powder, mix with potatoes. Cream the margarine, sugar & marmalade, then add the four & potato

mixture with the dried fruit.

3. Mix together. Put on a floured board and roll out with a floured rolling pin. Cut into 10-12 rounds or triangles.

4. Grease a heavy frying pan or griddle with greased paper. Heat the pan for a few minutes, and then test by shaking on

a little flour. The heat is correct when the flour turns brown within 1 minute.

5. Put on the potato cakes. Cook for two minutes on each side then lower the heat and cook gently for another 5-6 minutes.

Serve hot or cold.

The cakes can be sprinkled with a little sugar and mixes spice.
