INTERNATIONAL SPACE UNIVERSITY (ISU) ISU specializes in providing university and graduate level education and training programs to the aspiring leaders of the emerging global space community at its Central Campus in Strasbourg, France and at partnering institutions’ facilities around the world. The curriculum of ISU covers all disciplines related to space programs and enterprises, such as space science, space engineering, systems engineering, space policy and law, space business and management and space humanities. THE CREATION OF ISU The creation of ISU dates back to an international conference in April of 1987, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston – USA. Three North American students, Peter Diamandis, Todd Hawley and Robert Richards, led the project initiative and gathered about sixty specialists from all disciplines related to space, including: business, academia, space agencies and governmental organizations worldwide. During the conference, the foundations of the educational concept of ISU programs was adopted and the philosophy of the "3I"s was born: that is to say, providing an education that is INTERDISCIPLINARY, INTERNATIONAL and INTERCULTURAL. THE MISSION OF ISU

• Promote, in a neutral, international and intercultural environment, the exchange of ideas and experiences on current issues that recent advances in space market could provide answers,

• Provide the necessary specific and interdisciplinary knowledge needed to implement space projects in the public and private sectors,

• Advocate the development of space for peaceful purposes to improve life on Earth, and to allow the continued security and sustainability of activities in space,

• Foster the development of a dynamic global network of participants, professors, alumni, and experts. ISU PROGRAMS The purpose of ISU is to train professionals, with a profile that is very open to all disciplines, how to work in international teams while taking into account cultural differences. The formation of ISU is designed to extend the initial training of each student to all areas affected by space and to develop his or her initiative and independent judgment. ISU offers the following programs each of which have different core competencies for different participants profiles:

1 Master's Program known as the Masters in Space Studies (MSc. in Space Studies)

2 University Programs known as the "Space Studies Program" (SSP), and the Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program (SH-SSP).

Strasbourg, 7th biggest city of France, in the prefecture of Bas-Rhin was ranked "World Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO. It is the intellectual and economic capital of Alsace, having international and cosmopolitan ambiance. Its privileged location, in the center of a knot of international communications, the position of Latin sentinel on the Rhine and its history provide it exceptional importance. Therefore, it is only natural that Strasbourg was chosen as the seat of the European institutions and international organizations. ISU Central Campus is located in Strasbourg. Twenty six years after the first SSP in 1989, ISU Central Campus hosted SSP four more times in history with around one hundred participants and almost same amount of experts in the space field. During professional visits, participants of the ISU programs have the chance to discover the scientific and technological institutions operating in the region:

The Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory

The Observatory of Earth Sciences

Office of Theoretical and Applied Economics (BETA)

The Strasbourg Planetarium

Weather France

The Strasbourg Museum of Seismology

The European Parliament

The Space Studies Program (SSP) is an intensive nine-week session for university and graduate participants, and professionals from all disciplines, making this program a unique educational experience. SSP covers the main aspects of space: technical and non-technical issues related to space and extends to technology, physical sciences and satellites, as well as life science applications, policy, management and humanities. During the program, participants are trained in these disciplines and interact based on their personal knowledge. Workshops in medicine, robotics, communication, astrophysics and telecommunications are offered, among others.

SSP is held in a different location around the world every year. Moving from country to country and culture to culture adds an exciting dynamic to the program and continually enriches the curriculum. Since its inception in 1988, Shas developed a professional network composed of alumni, lecturers and major players in the space industry that continually enriches the program. Thanks to this network, projects have advanced in sectors, such as warning systems and reduction of the impact from natural disasters and the perfection of human health using space technologies; all of which have significantly contributed to global government agencies developing ways to protect the planet. Today, ISU has over 4400 graduates from 105 countries. This year, SSP18 is hosting 135 participants from 36 countries Netherlands.

SSP18 is hosted by the Netherlands Space Office (NSO) and will convene at Delft University of Technology, Leiden University and the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESA-ESTEC) in Netherlands, in between 25 June - 24 August 2018, with the slogan NLarge Your Universe! And “Global challenges, NL space solutions”, slogan for the Dutch space sector applies fully to the Dutch hosting of the ISU Space Studies Program in 2018. The Dutch have a history of exploration. Dutch seafarers explored the world’s oceans to establish trade routes and build international networks of cooperation. In the process they developed the law of the sea, the basis for modern air and space law. The hereditary gene of Dutch DNA for exploration and innovation is carried forward into the space age, where the Netherlands is an important high tech and space applications hub. The Netherlands is looking forward to passing this Dutch DNA on to a new generation of space professionals that attend the Space Studies Program in 2018 (SSP18), which is the first SSP to be held in the Netherlands. SSP18 is to benefit from the knowledge, facilities and location of three of the top space institutes in the world. The program is hosted in the province of South Holland, the area of the Netherlands where most of the Dutch space sector is concentrated. Participants and staff will be housed at the campus of Delft University of Technology. From this ‘home’ location the program will be co-hosted by two more leading space institutes in this region. Leiden University is a leading institute in the fields of air and space law and astronomy. Both Delft and Leiden are located close to The Hague, the administrative capital of the Netherlands. The third core location will be the European Space Agency Technology and Research Facility ESTEC in Noordwijk. This is the largest ESA facility and functions as a global hub for space innovation, as well as being the largest test center for European spacecraft. SSP 2018 is the first SSP to be co-hosted at an ESA site as well.

PANELS

International Astronaut Panel (2 July 2018) Moderator: Walter Peeters Panelists: Paolo Nespoli, André Kuipers The International Astronaut Panel is an annual highlight of each ISU session. ISU participants and the public will have the opportunity to interact with this outstanding group of astronauts who represent over 30 years of international spaceflight experience ranging from the Spacelab to the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station. Arthur C. Clarke Panel (8 August 2018) Moderator: Chris Welch Artist: Aoife Van Linden Tol ISU’s Arthur C Clarke Panel celebrates the intersection of space and popular culture, in the same way that Arthur Clarke’s works popularized space to the general public. From books to films, from social media to music and art, space themes can be found everywhere. This panel invites practitioners from different cultural areas to share how space has inspired their work, how they have engaged with space and space-related themes, and to consider how their work may influence future space activities and endeavors. Geopolitics and Future of Space Exploration Panel (1 August 2018) Panelists: Melanie Saunders, Christina Giannopapa, Gongling Sun The panel will discuss the strategic, policy, and operational environment for space science and exploration activities in the years ahead. This discussion will focus on how leaders think about the biggest opportunities for their programs in the next decade. The panel will also discuss multi-national projects like ISS, opportunities with emerging space programs, and potential roles for new privately funded initiatives. DISTINGUISHED LECTURES The Hubble Space Telescope: What Went Wrong, How We Fixed It, and Its Great Discoveries (27 June 2018) Speaker: Jeffrey Hoffman Since its launch, the Hubble Space Telescope has become one of the most extraordinary and beloved space science missions, and has provided some of the most memorable images of the cosmos. But the telescope was not an immediate success: Without the work performed by the STS-61 crew, including astronomer and NASA astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman, the Hubble could have been a scientific disaster. Dr. Hoffman will explain what led to Hubble’s initial problems, recall his shuttle experience as a space telescope “repair man”, and discuss how those repairs have led to the telescope becoming one of the greatest science instruments ever built. Starships (04 July 2018) Speaker: Simon “Pete” Worden At the Royal Society in London on July 20, 2015, Yuri Milner, Stephen Hawking and Lord Martin Rees announced a set

of initiatives — a scientific program aimed at finding evidence of technological life beyond Earth entitled “Breakthrough Listen”, and a contest to devise potential messages named “Breakthrough Message”. In addition, atop the One World Trade Center in New York on April 20, 2016, “Breakthrough Starshot” was announced – an interstellar program to Alpha Centauri. These are the first of several privately funded global initiatives to answer the fundamental science questions surrounding the origin, extent, and nature of life in the universe. The Breakthrough Initiatives are managed by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation. How to become an idea DJ? Insights on Cross-Industry Innovation (16 July 2018) Speaker: Ramon Vullings Cross-industry innovation is a clever way to jumpstart your innovation efforts by drawing analogies and transferring approaches between contexts, beyond the borders of your own industry, sector, area or domain. Ramon Vullings will discuss on what different sectors can learn from each other on process & services levels.
