PRESIDENT'S REPORT It gives me great pleasure to present my report to this meeting. Why our playing membership has dwindled has been debated at various levels and much energy has also been spent on it. Various solutions have been bandied about but nothing bedded down. My recommendation is to target individuals who maybe interested in running junior soccer and cricket as well as other codes eg darts , and bowls and table tennis ( which could include females ) that are also played competitively in Lenasia. This strategy must be in place until the end of 2005 and if no results are forthcoming than the issue must be re-visited. As a result of this strategy it will give us breathing space to assess which code of sport we should concentrate on and which not, what should we do with the excess stock etc. More importantly it will also enable us to strategise how much resources (financially and otherwise ) we should devote to Progress Grounds. The 60* anniversary events- fun soccer day held on the 22 June 2003 as well as the function on the 6 June 2004 - went off exceptionally well and as far as the function is concerned a benchmark for future functions has been established by our Club. School sport is receiving attention from the new Minister of Sport, Mr. M. Stofile , who said that “ We must go back to Wednesday afternoons as school sports days. But this cannot happen by chance “ . I am glad that this crucial matter is receiving attention at the highest level as the Minister is quite correct in saying that “school sport is the nursery for participants in senior competitions “ and that “school sport is a crucial lever in empowering young people towards healthy and active but disciplined lifestyles “. We have always expressed similar views over the years and in some ways feel vindicated ! Lastly my congratulations to all the players for their participation as well to all the trophy winners and a big thank you to everyone for their ‘tiny daily acts ‘ which has stood the test of time. PRESIDENT'S REPORT

It gives me great pleasure to present my report to this meeting.

SATURDAY TEAM (SA4) REPORT-SEASON 2003/4

The team won 3 and lost 5 of the matches played with 6 declared drawn due to rain. Only one of the 6 matches rained off took place at Progress Grounds.

Although the team lost 5 matches they were entirely the result of poor batting instead of the opposition outplaying us. Against RAU/WITS we only managed to score 24 after bowling them out for 102 , and we were poised to beat them at the second round match when the heavens opened up.

Per the league log one can see that only 4 points separated the teams finishing 2 to 7 with 4 teams tied on 36 points each. O f the 4 we beat 3 of them in the first roimd.

So it was a mixture of poor batting and weather that caused us to finish up low on the log.

Mukesh Patel scored the highest single score of 47 and he also took the most wickets in an inning of 4 wickets and was also highest wicket taker for the season of 18 wickets. Devan Patel was the catch of the season with nine catches and a proficient wicket

keeper.Dasrath Patel was the highest run scores of 181 runs for the season but faded during the last 5 matches scoring only 51 runs.Rajiv Patel as vice captain carried out his duties diligently and was the obvious choice of player’s player. He also scored 122 runs and took 14 wickets during the season.

We already have finalized the 13 thirteen players for next season and if we can put our heads down there is no reason for us to do better the coming season.

Azad Swaraj Sporting Club

Soccer Sub Club - Report 2003

Another season has passed by and the number o f partieipants and members seem to be diminishing and to be on a rapid decline in membership. This does not bode well for soccer sub club structure. We need to review the changes within the club, and track and follow the political and social changes taking place in the country. So as to see the impact o f these changes and transformation on the club and its membership.

We need to do in-depth analysis of the highs and lows o f the soccer sub-club and the sudden decline o f the dwindling numbers participating players and members recently. I as chairmen of the sub club and the executive need to analyse the sudden change and drop, in the number of teams participating in the association in the last 2 years.

The later part of 1990s saw good growth and development of the playing standards o f the teams and management with new coaching techniques being introduced by external coaches and this augured well for soccer sub-club. The development division under 7 and under 9 meant that a good foundation was being constructed for the future of the club survival.

New managers joined the club with new ideas and this bode well for the club as the additional men power was sadly lacking in the later period of the fifty years, for instance Zanton Thomas, Privkumar Lakha and Trevor Masher.

The attached analysis might shed some light to the decline in the number o f teams participating for the club. There are two key reasons for the rapid decline in membership at club level. But statistics can be deceptive in it self, without the complete knowledge of the under currents that is concealed and excluded in the statistics. The number o f primary reasons is as follows:

1) The conflict within the parent body Lenasia Soccer Association that commenced in 1999 and has been on going until recently and has still not been resolved. This has been one of the key reasons that have led to managers and players being disillusioned. Potential managers and players have joined other clubs and association’s to give potential players with skill, a better future to develop their soccer skills and a possible career path. The crunch come when the soccer administration and management spent 3 months off season in 1999 to plan for season 2000 for registration o f players and the election o f management of the teams. At the commencement of the season 2000 the LSA administration altered the registration o f cut o f birth dates to the various division about 2 times and this led to many of the teams having only 50 percent o f the active players left. With these apparent problems, many of the managers were frustrated and decided to join alternate associations.

2) The other factors that could have changed the clubs future is the lack o f new and younger administrators taking up key positions within the sub-club structures as well as at executive level. The failure o f the more senior players taking up management and administrative position within the club has left a large vacuum within the club and this could prove fatal to the survival o f the club.

Page 12: PRESIDENT'S REPORT€¦ · Jayesh Bhana 8 224 28.00 48 Chetan Patel 21 21.76 3.25 Jitesh Ravjee 8 199 22.11 68 Hemesh Bhatt 20 10.05 2.57 Rushil Naran 7 176 29.33 64* Bhavik Dhanjee

3) The tragedy that the younger generation has lost on knowledge that could have been imparted onto them from the likes o f Mr. Thiraj Bhowan, Dr. Risik Gopal, Mr. Ajit Gandabhai and Dr. Natvar Bhowan as this would have served them richly in later years.

4) The movement and relocation families to alternate residential areas have also contributed to dwindling numbers in membership.

5) The movement o f students schooling in areas outside Lenasia which caters for sporting activities. Student completing their high school career and perusing academic careers in tertiary institutes tend to spend more o f their time on studies and shift away from sports.

The season 2003 saw the club affiliating a single team in Dixina Football Association. The team performed well and occupied the league runners up position in the under 17 division. Special thanks to Jayen, Shyam and Yogesh for persevering under extremely difficult and demanding conditions.

The strength of any organization lies in the development o f its youth and in failing to do so leads to the demise o f the entire structure o f the organization. Lastly the knowledge accumulated in the last sixty years will be lost to future generation because of failure o f managers and administrators to occupy the vacant administrative position.Constructive criticism with follow up with action is a hallmark of a good and healthy organization but instead of being a passive armchair critic.

In spite o f all the draw backs I have personally benefited from this rich experience gained by working with very dynamic people in this organization and my sincere thanks to them. The last three years have been testing ones and special thanks to those who have persevered and struggled to keep soccer club alive. A special thanks to those that have served the club so gallantly Yeogesh Naran, Shyam Daya and Jayen Jiveen Daya. Lastly those who have made themselves available with time that can not be defined or a value stipulated for the services rendered Amrit Nathoo, Harish Bhowan, Anand Daya and Ravindra Lalla.
