Statement of Mission The Baptist College of Florida shall operate within the context of a Christian worldview to promote, provide for, operate and control a program of education and training for Christian leaders through awarding certificates and associate, baccalaureate and graduate degrees in a co-educational post-secondary setting. To fulfill its mission, the college seeks to develop those qualities in students that contribute to effective ministry. In the area of personal growth, we seek to foster a desire for knowledge; develop cultural awareness by introducing students to a wide range of knowledge; nurture the ability to acquire, evaluate, assimilate, and use information; and promote personal and social maturity. For spiritual growth, we provide the resources for gaining biblical and religious data; we also assist students in learning and living the Christian life. In terms of professional growth, students are enabled to gain the credentials that enhance opportunities for ministry, and they learn to master a specialized body of knowledge. At the same time, we encourage positive attitudes toward ministry and foster both an awareness of and a loyalty to the Southern Baptist heritage.

3 FALL 2013

FROM THE DESK OF THE

PRESIDENTDear Friends,

As I write to you, we are begin-ning our 2013 Fall Semester. I have had the privilege of being

at The Baptist College of Florida for almost 24 years, and I have never experienced a time in which there was more excitement and anticipation on the campus than I feel today. We have a great group of students in Graceville, Jacksonville, Orlando, and Online. When folks ask me how many stu-dents we have enrolled, I tell them that there are never enough. That statement is somewhat true and somewhat not. It is true in that I always want to see more students preparing to be “Changing the World Through the Unchanging Word.®” The statement is somewhat not true, be-cause I am convinced that God has just the folks here who have been called and responded to His will. I always hope for more, but I am delighted with the ones who have come.

With the new semester we have seen several changes and accomplishments. In the area of changes, we welcome new fac-ulty members: Dr. Shawn Buice, Professor Kaye Johnson, Professor Kristy Ford, and

Professor Jim Robinette. We also welcome Mr. Timothy Skinner to our Library Staff and Mrs. Lisa Potter to our Orlando Exten-sion Staff.

We have seen great growth in some of our programs. We now have 11 students in our Missions Aviation Program. This is a larger number than we anticipated at this time. We saw great growth in the number of new students in both Teacher Education and Music and Worship. Our in-ternet-based Distance Education program has experienced phenomenal growth this semester. Compared to the 2012 Fall Se-mester online enrollment, the 2013 Fall Semester online enrollment has increased by 97%. I am so grateful that the word is getting out about our online program, and I anticipate even further growth as we offer more degrees in this format. We cer-tainly look forward to our greatest days in the future.

This summer has seen numerous vol-unteer groups on the BCF campus. There is no way that we could ever do all that is needed without the faithful work of these volunteers. They are a blessing, and I am

eternally grateful for their faithfulness and sacrifice.

When you look at the front and back covers of this issue of Echoes, you will see the great difference in the images of the R.G. Lee Chapel and the reminder of the legacy of this school and the many who have studied and served here. I hope that as you reflect on their legacy you will take the time to reflect on the legacy that you are leaving. What is your life counting for now and in the future? Let me encourage you to take very seriously the legacy that you will leave. Please make a part of the legacy a pledge to pray for, visit, and sup-port The Baptist College of Florida. There is no better legacy than the education and training of the next greatest generation of Christian leaders who will spend their lives “Changing the World Through the Unchanging Word.®”

God Bless You,

Thomas A. KinchenPresident

Representatives from The Baptist Col-lege of Florida (BCF) joined other colleges, seminaries, messengers, and

guests at the 2013 Southern Baptist Conven-tion (SBC) annual meeting held in Houston, Texas, June 11-12. Although the convention attendance was smaller, BCF representatives were able to greet alumni and friends and fellowship with prospective students.

BCF President Thomas A. Kinchen shared with alumni his 20/20 vision for the cam-pus and announced the approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, as well as from the Commission for Independent Education of the Florida Department of Education, permission to deliver all BCF de-

gree programs and classes online. Kinchen told alumni and friends of the college that approval of the online degree offerings will greatly enhance BCF’s ability to deliver top quality Christian education unhindered by time and location.

This year, Kinchen began his 24th year as President of The Baptist College of Florida bringing vision, expansion, new degree pro-grams, and the excitement to energize and launch an unending group of men and wom-en into Christian service. As this great vision for the future under Kinchen’s steady helm takes shape, another generation of leaders will be trained and equipped to “Change the World Through the Unchanging Word.®”

Changing the World Through the Unchanging Word®” is more than just a registered trademark for The Baptist College of Florida (BCF) graduates; it is a mandate for Kingdom service.

BCF graduate Brooks Braswell (‘07), senior pastor of the First Bap-tist Church of Umatilla Florida, and Worship Leader Garrett Johnson (‘11), recently celebrated the completion of a debt free multimil-lion-dollar construction project which was nothing short of God’s amazing grace and blessing.

Conducting three services on Sunday morning with 1200 in atten-dance, First Baptist Church Umatilla has grown significantly from the 250 members only five years ago. Successful outreach ministries include an Adult Center, Crisis Center, Our Father’s Kitchen, Haircut Ministry, Coffee Shop, F.A.I.T.H. Riders, Backpack to School Min-istry, AWANA, SONshine School, Sewing Ministry, Giving Toy Box, and Thrift Store; intentionally reaching out to the community and changing lives.

Grand opening and dedication services were held on June 22, for the new 26,000-square foot facility ending the year-long construc-tion and months of capital campaigns and pledges for the three mil-lion dollar project. There are 18 new classrooms, touch-screen tech-nology for the new KIDZ LANDING check-in location, a 7,000 sq. ft. event center which includes HeBrews Cafe coffee shop, a 300 seat multipurpose meeting room, and a large welcome center to honor God and minister to His people.

According to Braswell, they also received a donation of a top-of-the line 7,800 sq. ft. playground that was installed for free during the last 3 weeks of the construction project. “This was absolutely icing on the cake,” stated Braswell. “There’s not a week that goes by that I don’t just drive around the church property and cry a little bit at the amazing things that God has done here.”

ON MISSION AT

THE BAPTIST COLLEGE OF FLORIDAOver the years, The Baptist College

of Florida (BCF) in Graceville has welcomed with open arms church

groups and mission teams who have given of their time, energy, and talents to volun-teer on the campus. Such groups arrived during the summer from the First Baptist Church of Tangerine, Tangerine, Fla., Trin-ity Baptist Church, Apopka, Fla., First Bap-tist Church of Orlando, Orlando, Fla., and Oakview Baptist Church, Okeechobee, Fla. They spent hours painting, cleaning, rip-ping up carpet, and cutting tree limbs to prepare the campus for next semester and to keep our students safe.

BCF Trustee Dianne Lovett coordinated the group of thirteen that arrived from both FBC Tangerine and Trinity Baptist, bringing warm smiles and eager hearts to the cam-pus providing resources and labor needed for several projects. A couple of the mem-bers of the group were very familiar with BCF and already had deep-seated connec-tions. One individual in particular, Ms. Fran Carlton, actually served on the selection committee/board that was responsible for securing Thomas A. Kinchen as President of

The Baptist College of Florida 24 years ago. The mission team spent long hours work-

ing each day grabbing a little rest in the evenings in one of the women’s residence halls. For Wednesday night prayer meeting, Kinchen led the group in a time of prayer and devotion and was able to share his heart and vision for what God has done and continues to do on the BCF campus and through His people. According to Kinchen, the challenges are great, but the resources saved by the mission teams and volunteer groups working on campus allow BCF to channel more resources into student schol-arships and sending students around the world on missions.

The 2013 Orlando Mission Team included 98 servant missionaries with the youngest only 2 months old and the most seasoned veteran 92 years old. It was exciting to watch one generation teaching the next how to serve and sacrificially give of themselves for others. This year’s labor of love included projects from pressure washing, deep clean-ing, prepping and painting, removing carpet and glue, repairing doors, removing shrubs, trimming and shaping trees, building and

rebuilding steps, installing windows, mak-ing witness bracelets, creating much need-ed office spaces for staff, and caring for the little tots as parents worked at the site.

Team Leader Jim Wortham and his wife and group photographer, Pat, were once again the driving force behind the group. In addition to the list of special work projects, Wortham planned VBS for the children, wa-termelon breaks, special devotions, an ice cream trip to the local drugstore, and a con-tinuous flow of meals that kept the workers full giving them energy to work.

As anticipated, the week brought much activity, sweat, long hours, sore muscles, aching feet, and major improvements to the BCF campus. The Orlando Mission Team was seen all over campus working hard, dodging the rain, playing with the children, and quickly checking off projects on their to-do list. The final number of work hours spent on mission projects will far exceed last year’s total of 1600 as this was the larg-est group to date that has come to pour their heart and love into the campus.

Oakview’s heart for missions stems from their Senior Pastor John Garrison and his wife Amelia who served as missionaries for 10 years in Zambia, Africa. The Garrison’s coordinated activities for the mission team in Graceville where Amelia and the cook-ing crew prepared meals and snacks, while John made sure projects were on schedule and completed. The “Builders For Christ” included woodworkers, teachers, college students, youth, home-makers, and other professionals who sacrificially gave of their time and energy and funded the trip to work on the campus. Together they built trusses, poured concrete, painted student housing,

ripped out carpet, sanded down glue, and tiled the entranceway coming in Graceville Hall. They spent long hours constructing, staining, and clear coating bookcases to be used in the McRae Morrow Education Build-ing. There is no way to fully estimate the tremendous benefits and resources saved by having the mission teams and volunteer groups working on the campus during the summer.

We are so thankful to God that we are able to partner with BCF and provide this labor of love to the college year after year,” stated Or-lando Mission Team Leader Jim Wortham. “Our desire is to be a blessing to the facul-ty, staff, and students of BCF, so that they can in turn be a blessing and God’s witness to the nations. You are all in our thoughts and prayers throughout the year, and we look forward to doing big-ger and better things in the years to come. God bless! Thank you to all who have

supported The Baptist Col-lege of Florida this Summer!!!

It should come as no surprise to our Students, Alumni and Friends that The Baptist College of Florida has been experiencing a series of innovative changes throughout the past couple of years. More recently; however, the college has been making a few adjustments that you may not have noticed. For example...

Our President, Dr. Thomas A. Kinchen, has begun blog-ging on The Baptist College of Florida website. Some of his blogs are written updates, and some of his material comes to you in the form of video updates. To stay up-to-date with the events going on in the life of your Baptist College, go to baptistcollege.edu and follow the “Pres-ident’s Blog” link under “Quick Hits” on the left hand side of the page.

schools for FRAG which provides tuition assistance for Florida undergraduate students attending an eligible private, non-profit Florida college or university.

The new funding source provides tuition assistance for non-theology or divinity majors searching for ways to continue their education. For more information on the FRAG eligibility requirements and awards, contact the BCF Director of Financial Aid Ms. Stephanie Powell at 800-328-2660 ext. 461.

The Ministry Referral Ser-vice of The Baptist College of Florida provides resumes of BCF students and alumni to churches and other minis-tries that are seeking persons to fill staff positions. The re-sume service is only available to students and alumni of the college.

While many of you have in the past used the Ministry Referral Service provided by The Baptist College of Florida, we have since updated the resume system by filtering through older submissions. The Baptist College of Florida wants to keep these submissions as up-to-date as possible so that we can better assist churches and organizations looking to employ current students

and alumni. At any time, if you would like to update your resume, please do not hesitate to email chang-es to [email protected] or you can complete the Ministry Referral Form provided on the website. the educational directories that compiles and equates statistical information on universities and colleges throughout the United States.

StateUniversity.com provides the opportunity for people seeking to further their education to browse through important statistical data about institutions while making a college selection. Prospective students can access the website in search of information regarding a college’s population, ac-creditation information, and degree programs.

The Baptist College of Florida is pleased to be rated as the 3rd safest four year institution in Florida. This ranking is merely an indica-tion of how important the safety of BCF students is to the administration, faculty, staff, and community leaders. Having a safe environment where students can learn and prepare for areas of ministry and leadership is just one of the critical components that sets BCF apart.

BCF WELCOMES NEW

STUDENTS FOR FALL 2013The start of each semester at The Baptist College of Florida (BCF) is a time infused with joy

as incoming students embark on this new journey in their life. Empty dorm rooms are trans-formed into homes away from home, life-long friendships are cultivated, and the campus

absolutely comes to life again. The new Fall 2013 class gathered for orientation the second week of August to learn more about

the policies, procedures, campus activities, and requirements of being a BCF student. They were able to meet with their advisors, attend a praise and worship service featuring a message of encour-agement from BCF President Thomas A. Kinchen, and then eat lunch with their faculty advisors. It was no surprise how quickly the new students found their way around the campus as they obtained their student ID cards, vehicle registration, and selected classes.

One of the new incoming students, Terry “JR” Benton (right), is thrilled to begin his educational journey at BCF as he pursues a Bachelor’s degree in Ministry Studies. Benton is a 2012 Thomas County Central High School graduate from Thomasville, GA.

“The thing I love about BCF is the undeniable family that is built immediately after arriving. There are so many great and wonderful people here that share the same desire to see the Kingdom come and for God to be glorified in their lives. It’s truly a blessing to be surrounded by so many believers who all share the same heart and passion to live fully for Christ, and to love each other as He calls us to,” stated Benton reflecting on his initial impression of becoming a student at BCF.

Benton is one of the many students who have come to BCF in Graceville to prepare for areas of ministry, music, business leadership, Christian counseling, missions, history and social studies, English, and education. Many of our students are preparing for areas of service online now that all of our programs are available in Florida online! For more information on all of the degree programs offered at BCF, please call 800-328-2660 ext. 460 or visit www.baptistcollege.edu.

The Missions Aviation program at BCF is getting off to a great start. During the sum-mer, instruction was begun in both ground and flight training. Since this was the first class, a small group of three students began the program. These students are making

great progress toward their private pilot certification. With the beginning of the fall semester enrollment in the program grew to eleven students. Dr. Tom Kinchen noted “I am absolutely delighted at the enrollment in this new venture. We are seeing the fruits of the labor of many individuals who have worked hard for many years to get to this point.” Dr. Rich Elligson, Missions Professor at BCF added “The success of this new program is yet another affirmation that God is still at work among His people, still at work among the nations, and still at work here at BCF. These truly are exciting days.”

13 FALL 2013

The phrase “summer break” means different things to different students. To BCF senior Emily Redmond (left), it meant taking a break from speaking English and putting her Spanish into practice in Central America.

“When I started taking Spanish as a high school student, I didn’t really like it. But when God gave me a heart for Hispanic people, he also gave me a heart and a hunger for learn-ing the language,” she explained. And God used that passion—and her language skills—to minister to young adults in the city of Leon, Nicaragua. During her two months there, Em-ily taught Bible lessons, led devotions for soccer teams, and even spoke of God’s love and saving grace on the radio. “My missions classes at BCF really helped me out,” she offered. “I was involved in virtually every aspect of ministry there, and I learned to be flexible and expect the unexpected.”

One unexpected blessing involved a lady named Tanya. She had been involved in an evangelical church in the past, but had become disillusioned, hurt and callous. Emily spent some time with her, encouraging her and praying with her. Before the summer was over, Tanya had come back to the Lord, put her bitterness behind her, and recommitted herself to God. “Sometimes we are so busy looking for new converts that we forget those who sometimes ‘fall between the cracks,’” Emily confessed. “God used Tanya to remind me that God not only saves sinners, but he restores those who may stumble along the way.”

and sign our guest book, share a testimony, or simply take a moment to spend time with a dear friend. And our prayer is that we can encourage you along the way as you work for His glory.
