NEWSLETTER ALKIMOS BAPTIST COLLEGE Dear Parents, Students, Teachers and Friends, In 2017 Alkimos Baptist College is officially opening the Alkimos Baptist College Fashion & Design Academy. The Fashion and Design Academy will be a specialist course designed to immerse young minds into the exciting world of Fashion. Students will design, create and showcase personal portfolios, explore and investigate past, current and future trends in Fashion, learn textile technology and clothing construction and ultimately develop business plans and marketing techniques to sell their fashion items. What a fantastic opportunity for these young people to be able to specialise in this area. With our Robotics Engineering Program already under way, Alkimos Baptist College has begun a series of moves that will see it become a specialist school, starting with Robotics and now Fashion & Design. What a great time to be involved in our school, as we strive towards our motto of Courage, Faith and Service. In Ephesians (Chapter 2 verse 8 - 10), Paul wrote to the Church in Ephesus, stating; “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” I believe that when we believe in God, receive his free gift of grace, he will prepare us for these good works. Being able to offer the Robotics Engineering Program in 2016 and to offer the Fashion & Design Academy in 2017 we are doing the good works God has prepared for us. I hope you have a fantastic week. Year 12 Ball

If the anticipation of the evening Friday March 4th was bubbling early in the term for the

Year 12s the actual day spun those incredible feelings that only emerge on the most special

of occasions. After weeks of the guys taking selfies and screen shots of their suits and

bickering over the colour of their ties, and the girls making impressive dress purchases and

accessorizing to a stunning standard, the night was finally here.

Words like exciting, surreal and overwhelming filled the air around the 12s as they ticked

off the minutes to leave for hair and makeup appointments…or a game of pool. The day

truly began at noon.

The students did not disappoint that evening. They were jaw-droppingly gorgeous!

The fellas suave and suited up and the ladies resplendent in glittering gowns, vibrant

colour and perfect bling.

Mocktails on entry, photos, great music selection and a delicious 3 course meal kept

us in good company through the night. Belle and Beau went to the ‘bedazzling in red’

Sophie and Casanova Kawana; hottest clutch and tie went to Naomi and Kurt with

honourable mention to old boy Matt. Best shoes went to Jordan and Shayna. It was a

narrow and fun competition as every student was a standout, particularly Taylah and

Mel in their striking colours and riveting back detail. If we were giving awards for

James Bond Glam then definitely Joey in his classic dinner suit cut and Phoebie in her

slinky black gown would have claimed the prize hands down.

The dance-floor was owned by Zack, and stalked by the guy in the pink mask. Naomi and

Hannah tore it up all night long keeping up with the moves of Mrs Graham. All in all there

were great vibes the entire evening and as the students laughter and chatting faded into

the warm, starlit night sky it was agreed, it was definitely a night to remember.

STRAVENS’ SPORTS SPOT

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament On Thursday the 3rd March students from Year 5 and 6 travelled to Kingsway Sports complex to compete in an Interschool Frisbee competition. Students had worked hard in sport leading up to this event, honing their skills and developing a great understanding of gameplay and strategy. On the day Alkimos fielded two teams in a competition featuring 5 different schools. 9 teams in total played on the day and it was great to see students playing with great enthusiasm, skill and fairness. Both the Alkimos teams had great success on the day with our Alkimos 1 side only losing one match. A big thank you to our High School assistants who gave up their day to help coach and umpire the matches and teams. We look forward to now preparing for our Winter Carnival sports, netball and soccer.

Monday Morning Training Club: Monday morning training club has begun and we would love to see as many students as possible attending to work on their fitness. With so many big events happening this year, having a strong fitness base will be vital for all our teams. Training begins at 7:30 and wraps up at 8:15. All students in Year 2 - 6 are welcome to attend. If Monday is not your child’s sport uniform day they must bring their change of clothes to change into after training. Alternatively they can wear their formal uniform with joggers and simply switch the shoes after the training concludes.

Interschool Swimming: Thank you to all students who have put their name forward to participate in the Interschool Swimming competition held on March 31st. We are currently confirming training locations and times and will distribute this information when confirmed. If your child would like to still be involved, please do not hesitate to see Mr Stravens.

Lunchtime Sport: The Capture the Flag tournament is now well underway with all teams poised to snare a spot in the finals. It has been wonderful to see so many students from every year group working together so well in their team. Currently The Space Invaders sit atop of the ladder with two outright wins. We look forward to seeing which teams continue to step up and challenge these front-runners.
