Music Styles & Trends

The 1980s saw the emergence of pop, dance, hip-hop, and new wave music, as disco fell out of fashion. Rock music still appealed to the vast majority of people.

Feathered mullets and crimpled hair stayed a trend during the 80’s

Neon clothing and jewellery were very popular too

Fashion in the 80’s1980's fashion had heavy

emphasis on expensive clothes and fashion accessories.

Apparel tended to be very bright and vivid in appearance; women expressed an image of wealth and success through shiny costume jewellery, such as large faux-gold earrings, pearl necklaces, and clothing covered with sequins and diamonds.

Punk fashion began as a reaction against both the hippie movement of the past decades and the materialist values of the current decade.

Ronald Reagan was the President of the United States for around eight years, spanning a majority of this era.

John Lennon, lead vocalist from the ever-famous and loved band Beatles, was shot dead by Mark Chapman on December 8, in New York City. The murderer later pleaded "not guilty" by stating insanity as the reason.

Hostages taken captive from the US embassy in Tehran were finally released by Iran on January 20, 1981 after a total of 444 days.

On January 20, Ronald Reagan was ushered in as the President of the United States.

Cultures and subcultures

- New Romantics were invented; a group whose preferred music was synthesiser electropop

- Clothing styles demonstrated a return to the freak scenes

This evolved into a harder, faster genre called hard-core punk came the straight edge subculture, relating to tobacco, alcohol and recreational drug use

This related to psychotive and stimulant drug use, and for some people, led to a promiscuous sexual behaviour
