• Ronald Reagan was born on February 6th, 1911

• 40th President – Served from 1981 to 1989

• Two Terms• Reagan Revolution: created to

help people rely on the Government less

• 1966- Elected Governor of California

• He was president of the Screen Acotor’s Guild

• 69 days after elected, he was shot

• Recovered quickly from gun wound and went straight back to work

• “Peace through Strength”• Maintained the free flow of oil during the Iran-Iraq war• Reagan Doctrine: Supported anti-communist groups in Central

America, Africa, and Asia• He was an influential American conservative• He wanted to combine conservative schools and forge them into a

political movement• Traditionalists, Capitalists, Anti-Communists• Reagan saw something essential to the American cause in each

strand of conservatism

Conservative Movement & Reagan

• Ronald Reagan and his legacy stood for the conservative revolution in America, centered on family and religion.

• He was the first modern conservative president• During his term, Reagan adopted policies that eventually brought down

the Iron Curtain; this made the world safer and freer than anyone could have hoped when the risky 1980's began.

• Ronald Reagan had previously been an actor, appears in such shows as Death Valley Days.

• He believed in New Federalism, this was a plan, announced in 1969, to turn over the control of some federal programs to state and local governments and institute block grants, revenue sharing, etc.

• Conservative Movement- mostly with republicans, its core principles are God and the Country.

• Against Liberal ideas.

• In 1980 renewed support for religious and national values as well as strong opposition to high taxes, government controls, and federal spending accounted for the ascendancy of the conservatives within the Republican Party.

• This led to the defeat of many liberal senators and representatives in the 1980 national election and the victory of the Republican presidential candidate, Ronald Reagan.

• The conservatives as a whole and their most vocal wing—called the New Right—challenged liberalism vigorously, calling for a return to basic individualistic values in the economy and society.

• They successfully urged more limited growth of domestic spending, a strong defense posture, and a more explicitly anti-Communist foreign policy

• Although they met with less success in efforts to outlaw abortion, legalize prayer in public schools, and enact New Right positions on other social, religious, and family issues, they continued their efforts in these directions throughout the 1980s.

• The guaranteed election of a non-conservative President on November 4, 2009 represents the end of the conservative movement in America.

End of Cold War… “EAT MY SHORTS!”

Cold War goes GLOBAL!• Soviet Union would not allow free

elections in the area they controlled and it continued to attempt to spread communism around the world.

• People in Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia resented control exerted by Soviet Union.

• Workers in Poland rioted against soviet rule and one greater control of government.

• Hungarian students and workers organized huge demonstrations and demanded the pro-soviet Hungary officials be replaced, soviet troops be withdrawn and that noncommunist political parties be organized.

End of Cold War (Cont.)• Eisenhower’s massive retaliation approach was powerless • The Hungarian revolt added a new level of hostility to international relations.• As cold war tensions increased, Egypt’s president Gamal Abdel Nasser tried to use

the U.S. Soviet rivalry to his advantage.• Nasser wanted to construct a dam on the Nile River at Aswan. • Nasser nationalized the Suez cannel placing it under government control.• Britain and France used the Suez crisis as an excuse to seize control as the Suez

Canal. • The three nations had counted on Eisenhower’s support and when it didn’t come

they were forced to withdraw their troops from Egypt.• In response to soviet influences in the middle east and else where the president

made a statement in January 1957 that became known as the Eisenhower Doctrine. • The Eisenhower administration also used the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in its

struggle against communism. • Congress created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

Totally Spies!

• Spy cases worry Americans• Two sensational spy trials drew the

nation’s intention to the threat posed as communist’s agents working to subvert the United States.

• Hiss had worked on several important new deal agencies and helped to organize the United Nations.

• Chambers turned against communism because of the brutality of Stalins rule

• Hiss appeared before House un-American activities Comity (HUAC) and denied he was a communist and in Espionage agent.

I spy with my little eye…

• Hiss was tried for perjury and was sentenced to five years in prison.

• Klaus Fuchs was charged for sending atomic secrets to the Soviet Union

• The trial of Rosenberg’s generated intense controversy in America and around the world.

• After 26 months on death row, the Rosenberg’s were electrocuted in 1953.
