Introduction

Lathe is a machine, which removes the metal from a piece of work to the required shape & sizeThere are various types of lathe machines likeEngine Lathe Bench LatheTool Room LatheAutomatic LatheTurret LatheComputer Controlled Lathe

TurningTurning is the process of machining external cylindrical and conical surfaces. The process uses a machine tool called a lathe. In this process the diameter is reduced along the work piece .There are different types of turning e.g. Taper turning, Contour turning, Form turning. This can be accomplished on a lathe or a machine tool specifically designed for the process; such as a horizontal boring machine.

Excess Material is removed to reduce DiameterCutting Tool: Turning Toola depth of cut of 1 mm will reduce diameter by 2 mm

TAPER TURNINGAn operation performed on a lathe that feeds a tool at an angle to the length of the work piece in order to create a conical shape. It has a wide range of use in contraction of different materials. It can be performed by various methods: Form Tool Swiveling Compound Rest Taper Turning Attachment Simultaneous Longitudinal and Cross Feeds

BORINGBoring is the process of enlarging an existing hole or internal cylindrical surface. To enlarge a hole or cylindrical cavity made by a previous process or to produce circular internal grooves. Boring is a variant of turning were the machining results in an internal cylindrical or conical surface This can be accomplished on a lathe or a machine tool specifically designed for the process; such as a horizontal boring machine. Some of the main reasons for utilizing this process include:Concentricity between featuresExternal thread to shaft diameter

Boring via Vertical Turret Lathe

FACINGIt is the process of removing the material from the end of the work piece to produce a flat smooth surface. Most often work piece is cylindrical and by using facing its length is decreased.machine end of job Flat surface or to Reduce Length of JobFeed: in direction perpendicular to work piece axisLength of Tool Travel = radius of work pieceDepth of Cut: in direction parallel to work piece axis

DrillingDrilling is a process to produce a hole by fixing a drill in the tailstock.Difference between vertical drill machine and Lathe machine is that the former one, only specified for drilling only whereas various job can be done by using Lathe machine. In lathe machine the job rotates, on the contrary in drilling machine the spindle rotates. Relatively high speed can be given in drilling machine than lathe machine.Reason for center drilling a work piece in a lathe is that it guides your drill so that it doesn't drill off center. Drilling into a flat surface with a standard drill is not going to work or in the rare occasion it does will atleast give u a headache trying

KnurlingKnurling is a machining process normally carried our on a center lathe. The act of Knurling creates a raised criss cross pattern on a smooth round bar that could be used as a handle, or something that requires extra gripIt is a diagonal crosshatching of grooves cut into a metal, usually for a handle or knob, to improve one's ability to grip the handle or knob. It can also be used to "rough up" a surface before installing a sleeve over an undersized shaft.Produce rough textured surfaceFor Decorative and/or Functional Purpose

The knurling process

Grooving Grooving (and other form-cutting processes) is one of the more complicated operations performed on theengine lathe. The cutting of grooves often requires high levels of precision for the machine. The function of a groove is usually to allow room for a fitting part.It could also be the place where another part fits into this part. Grooves also provide a relief in the back side of athreadwhere the thread terminates.Grooving is often done at the end of thread to allow full travel to it to a shoulder.Carried out using Grooving Tool called aform tool, also called Form Turning

The Grooving process

Threading PARTING:Parting uses a blade-like cutting tool plunged directly into the workpiece to cut off the workpiece at a specific length. It is normally used to remove the finished end of a workpiece from the bar stock that is clamped in the chuck. Other uses include things such as cutting the head off a bolt.
