Course Objectives

The basic goal of this course is to elaborate on fundamental scientific ideas, with particular interest in astronomy and our solar system. The basic topics covered will be light, matter, Newton’s and Kepler’s Laws and their applications to studying planets and the Universe. To succeed in the course the student must demonstrate understanding of the basic principles and application of those principles to various physical problems. Basic math (algebra) skills will be expected and required.

Grading Scheme• Three Exams (drop lowest) 30%• Final Exam (cannot drop) 30%• Media Reported Science 20%• Participation 10 % • Homework 10 %

All grades in the class are final 72 hours after they have been posted and/or returned. Please make sure if you have any grading dispute

that you contact us BEFORE this 72 hour period is over.

* A curve may be applied on tests, if necessary

* Note: Tests are worth a large fraction of your grade, if you consistently perform badly on tests, this is not the class for you

Exam Schedule• Three Exams worth 30% of your final grade (lowest

score will be dropped)• Three exams are tentatively scheduled for:

– February 7– March 21– April 16– * these dates are tentatively scheduled and may

change, with advance notice, due to course progression

• These exams are difficult, you will need to be in class everyday to properly prepare for them

• The final exam is scheduled for May 6, 1530-17308

Media Reported Science

• 3 times during the semester we will evaluate a science article reported by the media (CNN, BBC, FOX, MSNBC, etc).

• On a given day an article will be assigned. By the next class period, you will be expected to have: read the article, understand the basics of the study, question and evaluate the conclusions drawn, list un-answered questions and propose the next step/follown on study. You will bring this write-up to class, we will break out in smaller groups to discuss the article, re-evaluate, reflect, etc. The following class you will bring a final write-up evaluating the article

• Your grade will be determined 70% on the initial writeup and 30% from the final writeup and will be based on your ability to evaluate the article, ask intelligent questions and propose new ways to progress

• The sum total of these MRS reports will comprise 20% of your class grade

Homework

•Homework is REQUIRED.There will be several homework assignments throughout the class. Homework will be invaluable in your preparation for exams and therefore, they should be done thoroughly and in a timely manner (due dates will be assigned). However, homework will only be collected and graded randomly (approximately 2-4 times throughout the semester). The sum total of the randomly collected homework will comprise 10% of your class grade.

Note: We will be doing lecture tutorials in class most days, if you do not finish them in the allotted time they are automatically assigned as homework.

Participation

Periodically we will administer unscheduled questionnaires in class that will be collected during class. In addition conceptual questions will be asked periodically (in class) to assess your understanding of course concepts both after lecture and after completing in class activities. We will gather your answers for participation.

• We will be doing extensive in class activities• Attendance at all classes is REQUIRED. To succeed in this course you need to be here• Nearly all exam questions will be TPS questions in class or from your lecture tutorials.

Participation - continuedParticipation is absolutely mandatory. If we observe that you are not participating in any in class activities:on the first offense, you will lose 20% of your participation pointson the second offense you will lose all of your participation points On the third offense you will fail the class.

The class website will list your grades by a 4 digit pin number you choose.

Academic Integrity• Read the University of Arizona’s Code of Academic Integrity• This Code will be strictly enforced• It is unacceptable to cut and paste text from ANY source. • If you are caught duplicating material on your MRS reports you

will receive a 0 for that entire portion of your grade • If you are caught cheating on a quiz or on the final, you will

immediately fail the course.• In all cases at letter will be sent to the Dean of Students

describing the incident.

Cell phones, pagers, texting, facebook-ing, online poker, etc. will not be tolerated in class. If anyone is caught doing any of these, or other disruptive behavior, they will be asked to leave and the rest of the class will take a pop quiz

The class will have to take a quiz and the offending person will receive a zero on the quiz, which they can not drop.

You are responsible for policing your neighbors!!!

Our Place in the Universe

We live on a (rathersmall) planet calledEarth. Earth and 7 other planets orbitaround a very typicalstar we call the Sun

Earth has a Circumference of ~40000 km (4 x 109cm,~25000 miles)

The Sun is a G-type star with a surface temperature of ~6000K, the center is 107K. Boiling water is 373K.

“Kelvin” is a unit of temperature

The number of stars in the universe today is approximately equal to the number of grains of sand on all the

beaches of Earth!!

The Sun orbits about 2/3 out from the center of our Galaxy, the Milky Way

The Milky Way is a typical spiral galaxy (there are billions) with a black hole at the center.

The Milky Way galaxy is part of a cluster of galaxies called the Local Group
