Current Year 11 students have to remain in education or training until they are 18.

Student Choices at 16

FULL TIME EDUCATION – At a College, school sixth form or sixth form college;

General Qualifications e.g. A levels or further GCSEs – pathway to University

Vocational courses – e.g. BTEC qualifications.

Other Courses & Qualifications – e.g. City and Guilds, Foundation Learning

Student Choices at 16

WORK BASED LEARNING – Combining training with work;Apprenticeships – Apprentices are employed

usually with day release to work for NVQ and other qualifications at Levels 2 and 3. They are paid, but do not expect high wages!

Other training – e.g. Foundation Learning – developing skills needed for work.

Choices at 16 – What to Study

If you decide to stay in education you will need to make decisions on:

– What subjects you want to study– What qualifications you want to gain– Where to study

Don’t forget to think ahead! What do you want to do at age 18 and how will your choices at 16 support your chosen path?

• One 6th form required 7 B grades or above (including English, Maths and a Language)

• All qualifications count (even short courses taken)

mock exams:

•Many institutions use these grades as a major factor in deciding on places

•There are other benefits if you prepare / do well. Revision for mocks is very useful preparation for the real exams.

• If you have saved information within your ‘My Account’ area you can now re-use this information to pre-fill a number of fields within your application.

6. Check what you’ve put on your form then send it

•When your form’s complete, you go to the Check and Send Page.

•Click Check Application to see a summary of your form – read it through carefully before sending it.

•When you’re ready to apply, click Submit Application

What Happens Next?

1. You’ll get an Email Receipt to confirm your application’s been sent

2. You’ll then get an Email Acknowledgement from each sixth form and college when they start processing your application

3. Some sixth forms and colleges then contact you to arrange an Advice Interview

• Kudos can be accessed by young people from the link on the homepage of help you choose

Apprenticeships Website

Students who are interested in applying for Apprenticeships should visit the Apprenticeships website which can be accessed from the homepage of HYC.

Young people can register on the website for apprenticeship vacancies with employers.

What to do now?• Look at Help You Choose and shortlist courses• Go to Open Days and Events• Check if you can get any financial help while you study• Log on to Help You Choose. The CAP opens on 1st October

2013.• Complete the ‘My Account’ section on Help You Choose so

your information is ready for when you want to start applying for courses

• Check when your application needs to be done by• Think about a back up plan• Complete your online application form on Help You Choose

and send it off.• The vast majority of sixth forms or colleges will require

applications to be completed before Christmas.
