The UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceuti-cal Sciences (SSPPS) seeks to appoint two tenured Associate Profes-sors to complement its newly established drug discovery programin eukaryotic parasitic diseases. These positions specifically requireexpertise in parasitic diseases such as helminth diseases (e.g., schisto-somiasis) and kinetoplastid parasite infections (e.g., Chagas disease).

One candidate should focus on rational, structure-based drug design, targetingspecific parasite enzymes and should have a strong background in structuralbiology, especially x-ray crystallography aswell as in development of enzymeinhibitors by structure-guided modifications. Furthermore, the candidateshould have a track record of establishing collaborations with medicinalchemists for synthesis of compounds and their pharmacokinetic evaluation.

The other candidate should have a detailed knowledge of helminth para-site propagation, culture, and life-cycle maintenance and a strong trackrecord of publication and extramural funding in that area. The candidateshould also have experience in identifying molecular targets in helminthssuch as schistosomes for development of “target-based” drug discoveryprograms. Ideally the candidate should have experience in the applica-tion of high-content imaging and automated high-throughput systemsto support small molecule discovery as well as experience in the appli-cations of animal models of parasitic infections for lead optimization.

Both candidates should have a Ph.D and should have expertise in relevantparasitological, structural biological, drug discovery, and biomedicalfields. They will have ample opportunity to interface with an interdis-ciplinary team of biologists, biochemists, and medicinal chemists at theSSPPS. They will also contribute to team-taught courses for Doctor ofPhilosophy, Doctor of Pharmacy, and Doctor of Medicine students andwill be expected to develop an extramurally funded research program.

Candidates must have an outstanding record of scientific achievement,demonstrated by publications and other research products, such as softwareand information resources. Strong independent grant funding and proventeaching experience are highly valued. The ideal candidate will have strongdemonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity andinclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC SanDiego’scommitment to achieving excellence and diversity.
