This year we received 31 submissions. We were very pleased with the quality of the papers and the caliber of the students. The symposium was organized into four half-day oral sessions, a poster session, and a networking social. In the oral sessions on Sunday and Monday 24 students gave talks on their papers, and in the Tuesday poster sessions 7 students presented their work. In addition, the 7 poster presentations were selected by POLY for the ACS Sci-Mix session on Monday evening, and the students were able to present their work to a large audience there as well. These oral and poster sessions went very well. Many graduate students asked questions during the talks, and it was enjoyable to see them interacting during and after the sessions. As part of the recognition, each student received a certificate plus a cash award. We were pleased that Dr. Bassam Shakhashiri, the 2012 ACS President, sent a written message, which was read to the students. In addition, Dr. Joseph Mabry, the 2012 POLY Chair, attended the session and spoke to the students for 10 minutes, encouraging them to excel in their work. A reception followed. It was wonderful that many established and well-known polymer scientists came to the reception, talking and mingling with the students. This symposium was organized by the ACS Polymer Division (POLY), and cosponsored by Presidential Event (PRES), Young Chemists Committee (YCC), Division of Professional Relations (PROF), and Society Committee on Education (SOCED). The symposium had the generous support of POLY and Industrial Advisory Board of the Polymer Division (IAB). The detailed symposium program is attached. Symposium Organizing Committee: H. N. We had 26 students this year, and they were truly excellent in the quality of the research done and in their enthusiastic presentations. The detailed symposium program is attached below. This year we started the activities with a networking social on Sunday evening, with snacks and drinks. We were joined by the students from the Undergraduate Research Symposium. A large number of POLY officers and representatives from POLY Industrial Advisory Board were also present, and there were very good interactions among all the people. Professor Robert B. Moore, Chair of POLY, spoke briefly to the students, congratulating them on their selection and wishing them continued success. As part of the recognition, each student received a certificate plus a cash award. It is important to note that Dr. Nancy Jackson, the ACS President, made this a Presidential Event, and personally attended the symposium during the intermission in the afternoon. She spoke to the students and took a group picture with them, together with Professor Moore (POLY Chair). We realize that Dr. Jackson had a very busy schedule at the meeting, and we truly appreciated her support of the symposium and her efforts to come to the symposium. This symposium was organized by ACS Polymer Division (POLY), and cosponsored by Presidential Event (PRES), Young Chemists Committee (YCC), Division of Professional Relations (PROF), Society Committee on Education (SOCED), and POLY. The symposium had the generous support of National Science Foundation Division of Materials Research (DMR), ACS Polymer Division (POLY), and Industrial Advisory Board of the Polymer Division (IAB). The organizers thank all the sponsors and supporters, without whom this symposium would not have been possible. Symposium Organizing Committee: H. N. Cheng (USDA) Christopher J. San Francisco, March 22, 2010 We had a record number of 36 students this year. We were very impressed with the quality of the papers and the caliber of the students. In the oral sessions 18 students gave talks on their papers, and in the poster session 18 students presented their work. The program is attached below. Both the oral and poster sessions went very well. We appreciated the excellent presentations and the energy and enthusiasm that the students displayed. As part of the recognition, each student received a certificate plus a cash award. It is important to note that Dr. Joe Francisco, the ACS President, had made this a Presidential Event. Furthermore, Dr. Francisco personally attended the session at the end and spoke to the students. He then mingled and chatted with the students for quite some time. Group photos were also taken with the students. Realizing that he had a hectic schedule at the meeting, we truly appreciated Dr. Francisco’s support of the symposium and his efforts to speak to the students. Afterwards, we had a networking social/dinner at Café Bellini. The students in both this symposium and the Undergraduate Symposium (organized by Sarah Morgan and Sergei Nazarenko) were invited. It was wonderful that members of POLY Executive Committees and POLY Industrial Advisory Board were also present. They interacted with the students over beer, pop, and pizza. We had a good time. Particularly noteworthy were the conversations among the students. We noticed that many graduate students talked to one another, exchanging information. Moreover, many graduate and undergraduate students sat together and talked about graduate schools. POLY Awards Excellence in Graduate Polymer Research Symposium 2004-2013 2009 Excellence in Graduate Polymer Research Symposium Salt Lake City, UT March 22-23, 2009 This year we received 24 submissions. We were very pleased with the quality of the papers and the caliber of the students. In the oral sessions 14 students gave talks on their papers, and in the poster sessions 10 students presented their work. Both the oral and poster sessions went very well. Many graduate students asked questions during the talks, and it was enjoyable to see them interacting during and after the sessions. As part of the recognition, each student received a certificate plus a cash award. We were pleased that Dr. Bruce Bursten, the Immediate ACS Past President, attended the session at the end and spoke to the students for 10 minutes, encouraging them to excel in their work. A reception followed. It was wonderful that many established and well-known polymer scientists came to the reception, talking and mingling with the students. This symposium was organized by ACS Polymer Division (POLY), and cosponsored by Presidential Event (PRES), Young Chemists Committee (YCC), Division of Professional Relations (PROF), Society Committee on Education (SOCED), and POLY. The symposium had the generous support of ACS President Thomas H. Lane and the Dow Corning Foundation, National Science Foundation Division of Materials Research (DMR), ACS Polymer Division (POLY), Industrial Advisory Board of the Polymer Division (IAB), Rohm and Haas - a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, and Lord Corporation. The organizers thank all the sponsors and supporters, without whom this symposium would not have been possible. The detailed symposium program is attached. Symposium Organizing Committee: Erica H.
