Question 4 A designer displaying a 3D wire frame model is concerned that the displayed image does not show realism of depth; it reverses, inverts and can be difficult for some viewers to see correctly. List some of the processes that the designer could use to enhance depth perception in the image. ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... Question 5 A designer has specified a 65 mm diameter tube handrail which bends through 90°. Your task is to model this but your modelling produces many flat surfaces in the bend area. Question 6 Following recent fire damage, many farm fences need to be rebuilt and you have been asked to model several boundary fences. This will help with the ordering of the materials and the rebuilding of the fences. The task requires you to model several different types of fence posts, many hundreds of which will eventually be used in the modelling. What are some of the problems associated with modelling when large numbers of identical parts will be involved in a scene? How would you efficiently incorporate the posts in your scene? ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... ....................................................................................................................................................... This section assesses Criterion 2. Answer ONE question from this section. Your answer MUST consist of written notes accompanied by sketches with annotations explaining important features of the design. Clearly indicate which question you are answering. Question 17 Recycling makes an important contribution to sustainability. Your company has been engaged to create a 30-second video advertising the benefits of recycling. (a) Describe in detail the steps involved in producing the video. (b) Sketch a storyboard sequence of at least eight panels that provides a detailed visual overview of

the proposed video. Outline your ideas for text and audio, including any sound effects and music. Question 18 A food company has produced a new drink product called ‘zoki’ which is aimed at the teenage market. The company requires a visual identity (logo) for their stores, drink cans and marketing materials. The marketing focus is that the drink is energy-rich and can be consumed very quickly. (a) Describe in detail the design considerations you would take into account in developing a logo for

effective branding. (b) Provide sketches of three logos from which the company can choose. Discuss the design

elements of each of your three logo designs.

Question 19 There is a need to develop a tactile version of noughts and crosses to help children with a vision-impairment play the game. The design brief requires playing pieces to be easily identified by touch. (a) Show, using sketches and notes, how you would satisfy the design brief. (b) Describe how you would create the digital models ready for prototyping. (c) Describe how you could test the prototype. Question 20 In an effort to bring in more clients, a tour operator requires a method of demonstrating the diverse features of a region. The features have been categorised into the four strands shown below: 1. history 2. scenery 3. relaxation 4. night-life Your task is to produce a DVD that shows these features using a variety of media that includes video, still pictures and sound. The users must be able to navigate freely through the four strands and easily experience each media type. (a) Describe in detail the process you would go through in creating various links among the four

strands and media types. (b) Draw a menu structure showing the links that you would use to allow prospective tourists (the

users) to sample what the region has to offer.

This section assesses Criterion 7. Answer ONE question from this section. Your answer should consist of a written response in an essay format. Clearly indicate which question you are answering. Question 21 The computer hardware and software that designers currently use vary greatly from the hardware and software of 20 years ago. What major changes and improvements in hardware and software have occurred during the past 20 years? In your answer cover at least three different aspects of both software and hardware. Question 22 Many contemporary motor vehicles have devices that help drivers navigate a journey. These devices use satellite technology to display a route on a navigation screen. These devices are continually improving and their displays are becoming increasingly more realistic. (a) Describe how computer graphics create enhanced images on the navigation screens. (b) How do you foresee live feeds from problem areas combined with computer graphics special

effects being used to improve the usefulness and user-friendliness of navigation devices? (c) How can particular uses of computer graphics help to minimise the risk of drivers using the

navigation devices being distracted?

Section D (continued) Question 23 Sustainability centres are being established as exemplars of sustainable practice. The centres demonstrate how solar energy can be used to passively heat and cool as required. A large databank is continually being updated with data about rainfall, wind, humidity, temperatures both inside and outside, solar energy and how the solar energy is being used to heat or cool the inside of the centre. Schools can access this databank remotely for educational purposes. Provide examples of how the data and computer graphics could interact to produce on-line information that students of any level of education can read and understand easily and be made aware of the conditions and the effects of the sustainability features. Question 24 The idea of 3D printing has been around for some time but 3D printing as a useable technology has developed at a fast rate only in the last 10 years. (a) Describe how the various 3D printer technologies produce output. (b) Outline the current common uses of 3D printers. (c) Describe how 3D printing may develop and be applied in the future referring to potential

benefits and problems for society now and in the future.
