La Sicilia: un'isola di contrasti

La Sicilia è un’isola che si trova nella parte più a sud dell'Italia. Sebbene l’economiasiciliana non sia molto fiorente, la Sicilia è ricchissima di cultura e di costumi antichi.

Molti popoli conquistarono l’isola e con il tempo vi lasciarono le tracce della loropresenza e della loro civiltà.

I templi greci che rimangono sono forse i più belli e i più numerosi che si possanotrovare in qualunque altro luogo, compresa la Grecia. La villa dell’imperatore romanoTiberio a Piazza Armerina, o il teatro romano a Segesta e a Siracusa sono esempialtissimi d'architettura. Anche gli arabi e gli spagnoli lasciarono le loro tracce che siritrovano nei palazzi, nelle chiese, nei cortili di tante case.

Le bellezze naturali della Sicilia sono altrettanto straordinarie. I mandorli sono i primi afiorire a metà febbraio e tutto intorno all’isola crescono alberi di arance e limoni che inprimavera riempiono l’aria di un odore dolcissimo.

Il monte Etna, il vulcano più alto che ci sia in Europa è ancora attivo e offre unospettacolo pieno di mistero e di forza ai turisti che si azzardano a salire fino al cratere.La cima del monte Etna è coperta di neve sia d’inverno che d’estate. È molto piacevolein estate poter andare dal caldo della riva del mare al freddo delle nevi dell’Etna. Questamontagna infatti non è lontana dalla nera costa lavica che si bagna in un mareintensamente blu.

La Sicilia è un paese pieno di contrasti: la dolcezza del clima e la fertilità della costa sicontrappongono all’aridità e all'asprezza dell'interno, che, in alcuni punti, sembra essereun paesaggio lunare.

I turisti che visitano la Sicilia restano meravigliati e pensosi. Alcuni la considerano ilpaese più interessante che abbiano mai visitato.

READING PASSAGE 1

La fine del Rinascimento segnò la fine di un’epocaeccezionale ma la tradizione artistica italiana hacontinuato fino ai nostri giorni. Nel periodo barocco,il diciassettesimo secolo, e nel periodo neoclassico,il diciottesimo secolo, l’Italia restò sempre uncentro di grande importanza per la sua attivitàartistica. Durante il periodo romantico, ildiciannovesimo secolo, gli sforzi degli Italianifurono diretti alla lotta per l'indipendenza politica el’arte non fu coltivata con la stessa energia dei secoliprecedenti. Ma la tradizione artistica non morì.Infatti, dopo l’indipendenza l’arte trovò nuovaispirazione e nuovo impeto, e oggi l’Italia occupa dinuovo un posto principale nell’arte europea emondiale.

Roberto sale in treno e dopo un ultimo saluto a Eliocerca un posto. Immediatamente Roberto nota che itreni italiani sono molto diversi da quelli americani.Sapeva già che in Italia i treni sono divisi in classi.Una volta c’erano tre classi ma ora ci sonosolamente la prima e la seconda classe. Non sapevaperò che tutte le carrozze dei treni italiani hanno uncorridoio da un lato e che sono divise in scompar-timenti. Un'altra cosa che colpisce Roberto sono ifinestrini. Nei treni americani questi sono semprechiusi mentre nei treni italiani i passeggeri lipossono aprire. Roberto entra in unoscompartimento dove ci sono due passeggeri, unuomo di circa cinquant'anni e una signora, e si siede.

Naturalmente in Italia ci sono, poi, molte piccolecittà e molti paesi. Fra le numerose piccole città cheabelliscono il paesaggio italiano, occupano un postospeciale quelle dell’Italia centrale e meridionale,quali Perugia, Assisi, Viterbo, Orvieto, Siena, Tivoli,e molte altre. Alcune di queste cittadine sono situatesulla cima o sulla costa di una collina o di un montee presentano un colpo d’occhio pittoresco. Anche sel’aspetto di alcune città italiane è moderno, l’originedi quasi tutte è antica. Una caratteristica delle città edei paesi italiani che lo straniero notaimmediatamente, è che le case sono di pietra; essesono, quindi, molto solide e durature. È per questaragione che l’aspetto di molte città e di molti paesinon è cambiato molto attraverso i secoli.
