The information contained in this manual relates to tyres designed exclusively for goods vehicles and/or passenger vehicles. Any other applications are not permitted.

INCORRECT OR IMPROPERLY USED TYRES CAN BE DANGEROUS.

The manual has been produced in an easily understood form for information purposes and is not intended to be comprehensive in nature. The data given will be updated periodically.

Since the manual is intended for international use the information may not reflect national legislative requirements which must be taken into consideration.

With regard to care and maintenance it is necessary to follow the tyre manufacturer’s instructions. In particular, please remember that tyres age even if they have not been used or have only been used occasionally. Cracking of the tread and sidewall rubber, sometimes accompanied by carcass deformation, is evidence of ageing.

Old and aged tyres must be checked by a tyre specialist to ascertain their suitability for further use.

If in doubt concerning the interpretation of information please contact your local Pirelli representative.

OUR OFFER TO ENHANCE FLEET EFFICIENCY

Pirelli has always been at the forefront of engineering innovative premium solutions in every product generation. Our commitment to providing quality products is part of our past and our future. Our aim is to become a reliable, dependable partner that supports the work of fleets from start to finish. At this end, we offer a wide range of high performance products as well as solutions and services, designed to complement each other and exponentially improve the efficiency of each and every fleet, increasing driver and passengers comfort and optimizing running costs. Therefore, each tool we develop, whether it be the CyberFleet technology or even our newest 01 Series product lines, is engineered with our commitment to quality and safety.

01 Series is not only tyres, it includes a range of services and tools for our customers to enhance their performance. A range of services and tools dedicated to fleets developed by Pirelli, to enable operative cost efficiency, ease tyre maintenance and management, while optimizing fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions.

CQ24 International tyre breakdown 24h/7 days service is the complete solution for long-haul transport. Wherever the vehicle is located, whatever the breakdown is, whenever it occurs, the most suitable on-the-spot or in-workshop assistance will be organised to get it back on the road.

Pirelli’s commitment towards end user is to offer, besides the right performing tyre for each application / need, a solution to ensure that the tyre is correctly and properly managed during its life, thus enhancing fleet managers to get higher efficiency level. The Cyber Fleet Solution focuses on three key elements of the fleet running costs which together represent almost 40% of total costs: Fuel / Tyres / Repair and Maintenance.

A Pirelli developed and owned system, delivering: Enhanced tyre monitoring service for fleet customers. Capture of detail fleet vehicle, tyre fitment and tyre condition data in a central database.

Fleet Management is developed for the management of maintenance services of the tyre of the fleet through Pirelli qualified and certified dealers and central invoicing from Pirelli.

An optimised range of bands, with Pirelli original tread patterns, for all applications offers a wide choice for all customers needs.Identical quality for all tyre “lives”. This is the target of Pirelli Lifecycle Management, the Pirelli retreading system aimed at increasing Pirelli casing value through three key elements: tyre conception and production quality, optimised range of Novateck bands, network of selected retreaders.

CASING QUALITYPirelli maximises the casing retreadability starting from the casing project and the selection of the new tyre materials. In fact all the variables that will impact on the tyre during the whole life need to be taken into account also for ensuring higher retreadability.

SELECTED NETWORKPirelli selects the best in class retreaders through a rigorous qualitative audit in order to be able to provide its customers a high quality retreading process. The qualitative monitoring applies for both casing selection performed by the retreader and the retreading process itself.

NOVATECK BANDSAn optimised range of bands for all applications offers a wide choice for all customers needs.

Novatread is the entirely mould-cure retreaded tyre from Pirelli. The casings used are new generation original Pirellis, where the most recent technological innovations have been applied, fine tuned to ensure high resistance and integrity beyond their first life.

Despite the high retreadability index of the new Pirelli casings, before the regeneration process they are subjected to careful checks. In addition to the quality of the casings, the use of compounds for the tread band formulated to provide optimum balance between mileage, tread tear resistance and low rolling resistance, as well as the original tread designs of the 01 Series range, make Novatread the ideal product for those looking for performance comparable to new tyres, at really great prices. The painstaking regeneration process, and the quality-control inspections conducted in accordance with Pirelli standards prior to the product going on sale, place the Novatread retreads among the top players in the market.

Pirelli medium and heavy commercial vehicle tyre range includes products for both people and goods transport. Tyres are developed with the objective to offer the right solution taking into account the type of transport and road surface, in view of maximum benefit for the customer. Those parameters have a direct effect on all tyre selection variables, both technical (materials utilized, design, etc.) and financial (wear, running costs, length of first life and useful life, etc.). The combination of application and vehicle type provides optimum tyre specifications for each segment.Further details of this definition, allowing each type of use to be clearly identified, are set out in the following charts.

TECHNICAL TABLES LEGEND

The linear distance between the outsides of the sidewalls of an inflated tyre excluding elevations due to labelling (marking), design application indicators, protective bands or ribs.

(S) SECTION WIDTH (MM)

Half difference between the overall diameter and the nominal rim diameter.

(H) SECTION HEIGHT (MM)

The diameter of an inflated tyre at the outermost surface of the tread.

(OD) OVERALL DIAMETER (MM)

The distance between wheel centre and road surface referring to a tyre inflated and loaded at the values shown in the table under static conditions.

(RSTAT) STATIC LADEN RADIUS (MM)

The distance covered in one complete revolution of the tyre under load and pressure conditions indicated in the tables.

ROLLING CIRCUMFERENCE (MM)

Dual spacing is the distance between the centre lines of the twin tyres. The “A min” values refer to tyres without chains and may also be applied in the case of the fitment of chains for twin tyres. If chains are fitted on one tyre only, the “A min” values must be increased so that the sidewalls of the tyre under load do not trap the chain and become damaged.

The EU Regulation introduces labeling requirements with regard to the display of information on the fuel efficiency (rolling resistance), wet grip and external noise of the tyres. The aim is to increase safety and efficiency of road transport by promoting fuel efficient and safe tyres with low noise levels.

The need for greater information on tyre fuel efficiency and other parameters is relevant for consumers which cannot easily compare the performances of different tyres and tyre brands in the absence of a labeling and harmonized testing regime. The Regulation allows end users to make more informed choices when selecting the right tyre.

The Regulation requires that all the tyres produced from 1st July 2012 and on sale in the EU from 1st November 2012 will carry a sticker or have a label in their close proximity to be shown to the end user before purchasing.

EU TYRE LABELLING REGULATION (NO.1222/2009)

Pirelli, as brand premium Company, welcomes and fully supports the introduction of the tyre label considering it as a good tool to get more transparency towards end-users and a help for the consumers in collecting some essential information when purchasing new tyres.

Consumers must also be aware that fuel savings and road safety depend heavily on the drivers’ behavior. Furthermore using tyres correctly and maintaining them, as well as being aware of their characteristics, are fundamental elements to guarantee safety in any situation and increase the tyres’ lifespan while saving money.

Pirelli wants to remark that rolling resistance, noise and wet braking are 3 important performance indicators but the overall value of a truck tyre must be measured the basis of parameters: mileage, handling (dry and wet), traction, road holding and plastic comfort. Each product is developed to deliver the best performance trade-off for each application segment.

Safety is the most important criteria and Pirelli objective has been always an optimum balance among all relevant performances and therefore success factors. Tyre dealers will maintain an essential role in the consumers purchasing decision as he still represents the tyre expert who can suggest the right tyre for each end user need.

Truck winter tyres are developed for optimum performance in weather conditions under 4°C, snow, wet and melted snow. Since the label doesn’t show any specific criteria for winter performance, winter tyres could rank into lower classes than summer tyres. This requires an additional explanation by the tyre specialist.

PIRELLI POSITION

REDUCE FUEL CONSUMPTION

FUEL EFFICIENCY ASSOCIATED TO

THE TYRE’S ROLLING

RESISTANCE

LABEL CLASS: FROM C TO B VEHICLE: TRACTOR + SEMITRAILERKM/YEAR: 160.000 kmFuel eCONOMY: 3,5 Km/lAPPLICATION/route: H/R

The difference between a C tyre and a B tyre means a reduction or increase in fuel consumption of between 2.5% - 4.5% for a car and 5%-8% for a truck.

Calculation based on theoretical constant Rolling Resistance value during whole tyre lifespan.Discover how we can REDUCE FUEL CONSUMPTION on: www.pirelli.com/tyre/ww/eu/truck_bus

Rolling Resistance is a force acting opposite to the travel direction when the tyre is rolling. Considering that tyres contribute up to 20% of the overall fuel consumption for a car and up to 35% for a truck, it is important to reach low Rolling Resistance values. Let’s understand how it works: due to the vehicle load, the tyre is deformed in the contactarea with the road surface dissipating energy in form of heat. The higher deformations, the higher the rolling resistance and consequently more fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. In the EU tyre Regulation label, rolling resistance is expressed in grades, ranging from A (best grading) to F for industrial vehicles and G for cars (worst grading).

REDUCE NOISE EMISSIONS

EXTERNAL NOISE LEVEL

(GIVEN IN DECIBELS)

Traffic noise is a relevant environmental issue determined by several factors such as: Traffic intensity, Vehicle type, Driving style and Tyre-Road interaction. The value indicated in the label is not the internal that the driver will perceive while driving, but the external one, that is contributing to acoustic pollution. To reduce traffic noise it is therefore appropriate to purchase tyres with low external rolling noise.

3 SOUND WAVES meets EC Dir. 2001/43 limits.(+ 2 wave = + 6 db = four times the noise)

1 SOUND WAVES3 db (A) less than the limits of EC Reg 661/2009.

2 SOUND WAVESmeets EC Reg 661/2009 limits.(+ 1 wave = + 3 db = double the noise)

INCREASE SAFETY ON WET

SAFETY ASSOCIATED

TO THE TYRE’S WET GRIP

Wet grip is one of the most important safety characteristic of a tyre. Excellent grip on wet means shorter braking distances when driving in rainy weather. There are other important parameters which are relevant for safety but wet grip was chosen as the most representative situation in order to compare different tyres.

For example, in case of Pirelli Truck Tyres the difference in braking distance between grade C and B can achieve up to 17%.

INFLATION PRESSURE

This is one of the factors that mostly influences tyre efficiency. It is the compressed gas in the tyre that supports the load. Incorrect pressure, whether associated with overinflation or underinflation, will either have the effect of over “supporting” the tyre and causing casing stress, or under “supporting” it, with a consequent increase in flexing and generation of an excessive amount of heat, and this may cause tyre failure. Flexing during service is a function of the load supported by the tyre and of the inflation pressure; it is predetermined in the design phase to optimise the tyre performance. Inflation pressure must always depend upon the actual load per axle, to guarantee the proper tyre flexing. Overload leads to similar effects as underinflation. When the correct pressure is used even the tyre footprint area, i.e.: the contact surface between the tread and the road, will be optimal and this is a determining factor to guarantee even wear.

DO NOT “BLEED” TYRESOne of the causes of underinflation is the practice of “bleeding” tyres i.e. reducing the pressure in tyres which have run, warmed up and, therefore, increased in pressure above their starting pressure. Due to casing deflection, all tyres generate heat in operation. This causes the inflation air to warm up, it will try to expand but, because it is confined and cannot, the pressure increases. Such increase is quite normal and tyres are designed safely to withstand it. If air is let out to reduce the pressure, it will mean that the tyre is working at too great a defection for a hot tyre, i.e. it is in fact under inflated in relation to the load carried. The increased deflection will generate even more heat: the tyre may again reach the higher pressure, but it will be hotter still.

We should recall that the pressure must be measured when the tyre is cold, after the vehicle has been standing for several hours. However using the innovative technology provided by Pirelli Cyberfleet™ system, it is possible to optimise vehicle downtime enabling tyre pressure checks also in hot conditions.

With regards to pressure check, we recommend compliance with the following instructions:

(*) Make sure the valve cap is always properly screwed. The spare wheel must be checked as well.

HOW IT WORKSThe sensor is activated when the vehicle is in motion or when there are significant temperature and/or pressure changes, even with the vehicle stopped. The data (temperature, inflation pressure and sensor ID) is transmitted via RFID. There are two ways in which the data can be saved and made available: static or dynamic.

STATIC MODEThe sensor data can be read, with the vehicle stopped, with a hand-held reader: it activates the sensors and receives the temperature and pressure information for each individual tyre/ sensor. The data is stored on the device and can be transferred (via USB port) to a PC for later analysis and storage.

DYNAMIC MODEIntegration with a data transmission system that is installed with additional components (T-box / ALM). This allows individual signals coming from all the sensors on the vehicle to be read simultaneously and then transmitted electronically (via GSM/GPRS/Satellite...) to a centralised database. The information is made available on the internet through a specific web based application. While the vehicle is in motion, the sensor sends data on the temperature and inflation pressure at regular intervals, so faults can be reporting and graphs can indicate performance levels. In this solution, thanks to the use of data transmission systems, each individual tyre mounted on the vehicle can be tracked and, indirectly, the vehicle’s mileage and operating speeds

ADVANTAGES

COST EFFICIENCYCorrect tyre inflation is essential for rolling resistance; thanks to Cyberfleet™, the energy efficiency class indicated on the label can be maintained and benefits can be maximised in greater fuel economy.TYRE LIFEIf tyres have the correct pressure, they wear better, more evenly and last longer. A version of Cyberfleet™ the ‘dynamic’ version - also lets you track the actual mileage driven.SAFETYMonitoring pressure and temperature helps the driver and/or the fleet manager avoid tyre failure and prevent accidents.SECURITYThe position of each individual tyre can be constantly monitored, providing yet another check on the vehicle (beyond the individual tyres), in addition to standard telematic checks.

STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS

RECEIPT OF TYRES – AREA OF CONSERVATIONIn bad weather conditions, unloading at the time of receipt must be carried out in a covered area; in any event, if water is found inside the tyres, this must be removed immediately. Unloading must not be carried out by dropping the tyres or by any other method which could damage the quality or visual aspect of the tyres. Tyres must not be moved by inserting the forks of a fork lift truck through the center of a tyre which could damage the bead area. Tyres must be stored inside a clean, dry and ventilated area, protected from direct sunlight or other source of artificial light (illumination must be realized with lamps of low ultraviolet and infrared emission). In the case of temporary external storage, the tyres must be covered (eg. with an impermeable opaque material) and protected from contact with water and humidity.

TEMPERATUREThe storage temperature must be less than 35°C and preferably less than 25°C. A temperature greater than 50°C, especially if stock rotation is not sufficient, can result in accelerated forms of deterioration, such as to reduce the duration in use of the tyre. Avoid contact with heaters and radiators. Very low temperatures in the storage area are not in themselves damaging, but can provoke rigidity of the tyre. In this case, they must not be deformed during movement or fitting. If they are destined to be used immediately they are released from storage, it is necessary to keep them for a few hours in an area with a temperature of approximately 20°C.

OXYGEN, OZONE AND CHEMICAL SUBSTANCESAppliances which generate ozone must not be introduced into the storage area, also gas and vapors from combustion which can generate ozone via photo-chemical processes must be excluded from the area. Neither the area or the equipment in the storage location must present traces of solvents, inflammable materials, lubricants, chemical products, acids, disinfectants, rubber solutions, etc. which could prejudice not only the visual aspect but also the characteristics of the product.

DEFORMATIONTyres must not be submitted to any deformation due to tension or compression.

CRITERIA FOR STORAGE

STORAGE FOR LONG PERIODSThe best method for storage is vertically in rows of one tyre high, on racks, positioned at least 10 cm from ground level, with the sidewalls positioned vertically, so that the profile is not altered (pict.1). The vicinity or stacking of other racking or pallets must not deform the profile of the tyres. The number of tyres per row must be such as to not compromise the sidewalls.

Tyres equipped with CyberFleet™ sensor, the innovative solution for detecting inflation pressure, have to be stored in vertical position and with the sensor (identified by the relative band of adhesive type) in the highest possible position with respect to the tread portion that leans on the soil. This is to prevent any infiltration of dirt and water can damage the sensor).

STORAGE IN A ROW ON PALLETS (BEST METHOD)

SHORT TERM STORAGEUp to 4 weeks, tyres can be stored in stacks, one on top of the other, preferably on a fixed rack or on stackable pallets, reforming the stack inverting the order of the tyres on a weekly basis. In all cases when tyres are stored in stacks, it is necessary to ensure that there is no partial misplacement from the vertical plane, in order to avoid any permanent deformation of the lower tyres in the stack.

The maximum height of the stack must not exceed 1.2m and the tyres in the stack must all be of the same dimension.

INNER TUBES AND VALVESWhether inner tubes are supplied by the producer in single boxes, large boxes or wrapped in plastic film, it is always preferable to maintain the original packaging. In alternative they can be stored also slightly inflated, inserted within the tyre, or piled deflated, up to a maximum height of 50 cm, on racking shelves with a closed base, accurately avoiding that the valve can damage the surface of the tube when squashed under the pressure of their own weight.Ensure that the tubes do not overlap the edge of the plane on which they are stored to avoid accidental laceration. It is not recommended to store on slatted pallets because the pressure applied to the tubes will not be uniform. Do not hang inner tubes during storage. Valves should be stored in their packaging in a clean, well ventilated and dry location.

FLAPSFlaps should preferably be placed within the tyre together with the inner tube. If they are stored separately, they should be placed horizontally, in a pile on a shelf, protected from dust, grease, humidity, ozone and direct sunlight. To avoid deformation and stretching they must not be hung up in any way.

STOCK ROTATIONThe storage location must be organized in such a way as to guarantee constant stock rotation, limiting to the minimum the storage period of the tyres. Products which enter storage first must be the first to leave. First in, first out.

REGROOVING PRINCIPLES

PREMISE

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTSRESPONSIBILITY

SUPPLEMENTARY ANCHORING

The regrooving operation consists of cutting into the tread of a tyre a tread pattern deeper than the original so as to prolong its useful life. Mileage is thus increased and costs per kilometre are reduced. When regrooving it is of fundamental importance to pay attention to avoid exposing the upper belts of the tyre and to ensure that an adequate layer of rubber is left to protect them. In this booklet Pirelli supplies specific instructions regarding the patterns to follow in the regrooving of their tyre treads and the recommended groove widths and depth of rubber to remove from the bottom of the original grooves. The European (EEC) and American (DOT) normatives demand that tyres designed and constructed so as to be suitable for regrooving are marked on both sidewalls with the word REGROOVABLE.

• Fit the tyre onto a proper support. Exert constant pressure and, following the prescribed pattern, cut the rubber at the bottom of the grooves following firstly the circumferential grooves and then the transverse slots where present. After few centimeters measure the reegroving width and depth in order to check the correct choice and size of the blade. For tyres with “Zero Degree Belts” complete the regrooving in the direction of rotation indicated by the equilateral triangle placed on the tyre sidewall.

• By carefully following the procedure described a thickness of rubber is left at the bottom of the groove that is sufficient to protect the upper belts of the tyre. Under no circumstances should the regrooving blade be allowed to shave or notch the metal belts as this would render the tyre unsafe and could compromise subsequent remoulding.

• The regrooving operation must only be carried out by specifically trained personnel. Tyres worn to the point where the original tread pattern is invisible (even in a restricted area) cannot be regrooved as it is impossible to evaluate the depth of the remaining rubber.

• As it is possible that the tyre may be worn unevenly it is important to check that the tread has a residual minimum depth of at least 2-3 mm.

• Before beginning the regrooving operation the tyre must be examined carefully to check that it is in good condition and that it has not already been regrooved. A previous regrooving is immediately recognisable to a specialist operator: the grooves lose their sharp corners, especially in areas with zig-zag grooves and there are characteristic signs (undulations) left by the blade within the groves. If the tyre has already been regrooved the tread wear indicators (TWI), that is rubber bridges at the base of the tread, will have been removed during the regrooving operation, and the groove bottoms will be smooth.

Regrooving is inappropriate whenever the tread is scraped, cut or torn. Any tyre damage or repairs that have not been well executed must be rectified prior to regrooving.

• Before starting the regrooving operation all foreign bodies (that could damage the cutting tool) must be removed from the tread and the condition of the groove bottoms must be checked.

• The depth of the grooves must be measured at a number of points around the circumference of the tyre. The blade cutting depth must be adjusted in accordance with the minimum measured depth.

• The regrooving must be executed with the specific cutting tool (gouge) equipped with an electrically heated blade, and preferably in a well ventilated place. It is advisable to select a blade profile corresponding to the regrooving width and the profile prescribed for that particular tyre.

In order to adjust the regrooving blade correctly add the minimum remaining tread depth figure (A) to the regrooving thickness (P) specified by the manufacturer for that tyre size and tread pattern.

The operator executing the regrooving accepts complete responsibility for the work executed on the tyre and its suitability for use.

This operation consists of the cutting of supplementary grooves (not deeper than the original ones) or slots in the tyre tread, usually in a diagonal or transverse direction so as to guarantee improved adhesion on slippery surfaces. The work must be executed by specialists who will assume full responsibility, taking into account the instructions supplied by the tyre manufacturers.
