Officephone:688-4229 Teacher:Dr.JohnWalkerOfficehours:M-F8:30-9:00,10:30-11:00a.m. E-mail:john.walker@sdstate.eduClassmeetingdays:TBA Classroom:LMH111 OfficeLocation:LMH111 CourseDescriptionCatalogdescription:Pedagogicalconsiderationsinteachingmusic.Methodsandconceptsinspecializedareas:section2:piano.Additionaldescription:PianoPedagogyisforstudentswhointendtoteachpianoinschoolsorprivatestudio.Thecoursewillcoverbasicelementsofpianomusicianship,historyofthepianoandpianopedagogy,conceptsofteachingpiano(includingtechnique,rhythm,reading,andimprovisation),learningtoselect,evaluate,anduseliteratureandmaterialssuitableforteachingmusicatalllevels;shortandlongtermlessonplanning;thebusinessoforganizingandrunningapianostudio;teachingmethodsandtechniques;motivatingstudentstopracticeandlearn;preparingstudentstoperform;andprofessionalaffiliations.Thecoursewillalsoincludeanelementofpracticum,inthatstudentswillteachayoungpianostudentinclass.Studentswilldeveloptheprocessskillsofanalysis,synthesis,andevaluationthroughthecompletionoftermpedagogyprojectsandpapers.PrerequisitesStudentsshouldhavebasicpianoskills,andbasiccomputerandinternetskills.InstructionalMethodsThiscoursewillinvolvelectureandclassdiscussion,textbookreadingassignmentswithhomework,demonstrationsofpianoplayingandteaching,groupreadinganddiscussions,individualresearchprojects,anddevelopmentofprofessionalteachingportfolio.ForthePracticumsectionofthecourse,studentswillgooutintotheBrookingscommunitytoobserveprofessionalpianoteachers,andwillteamteachacommunitypianostudentinclass.
