Methods and concepts in specialized areas: section 2: piano. Additional description: Piano Pedagogy is for students who intend to teach piano in schools or private studio. The course will cover basic elements of piano musicianship, history of the piano and piano pedagogy, concepts of teaching piano (including technique, rhythm, reading, and improvisation), learning to select, evaluate, and use literature and materials suitable for teaching music at all levels; short and long term lesson planning; the business of organizing and running a piano studio; teaching methods and techniques; motivating students to practice and learn; preparing students to perform; and professional affiliations. The course will also include an element of practicum, in that students will teach a young piano student in class. Students will develop the process skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation through the completion of term pedagogy projects and papers. Prerequisites Students should have basic piano skills, and basic computer and internet skills. Instructional Methods This course will involve lecture and class discussion, textbook reading assignments with homework, demonstrations of piano playing and teaching, group reading and discussions, individual research projects, and development of professional teaching portfolio. For the Practicum section of the course, students will go out into the Brookings community to observe professional piano teachers, and will team teach a community piano student in class.
