Officephone:688-4229 Teacher:Dr.JohnWalkerOfficehours:M-F8:30-9:00,10:30-11:00a.m. E-mail:[email protected]:TBA Classroom:LMH111 OfficeLocation:LMH111 CourseDescriptionCatalogdescription:Pedagogicalconsiderationsinteachingmusic.Methodsandconceptsinspecializedareas:section2:piano.Additionaldescription:PianoPedagogyisforstudentswhointendtoteachpianoinschoolsorprivatestudio.Thecoursewillcoverbasicelementsofpianomusicianship,historyofthepianoandpianopedagogy,conceptsofteachingpiano(includingtechnique,rhythm,reading,andimprovisation),learningtoselect,evaluate,anduseliteratureandmaterialssuitableforteachingmusicatalllevels;shortandlongtermlessonplanning;thebusinessoforganizingandrunningapianostudio;teachingmethodsandtechniques;motivatingstudentstopracticeandlearn;preparingstudentstoperform;andprofessionalaffiliations.Thecoursewillalsoincludeanelementofpracticum,inthatstudentswillteachayoungpianostudentinclass.Studentswilldeveloptheprocessskillsofanalysis,synthesis,andevaluationthroughthecompletionoftermpedagogyprojectsandpapers.PrerequisitesStudentsshouldhavebasicpianoskills,andbasiccomputerandinternetskills.InstructionalMethodsThiscoursewillinvolvelectureandclassdiscussion,textbookreadingassignmentswithhomework,demonstrationsofpianoplayingandteaching,groupreadinganddiscussions,individualresearchprojects,anddevelopmentofprofessionalteachingportfolio.ForthePracticumsectionofthecourse,studentswillgooutintotheBrookingscommunitytoobserveprofessionalpianoteachers,andwillteamteachacommunitypianostudentinclass.

CourseRequirementsTextbookandmaterials:ProfessionalPianoTeaching,byJeanineJacobson(Alfred)(required)NotebookandfolderforcollectingmaterialsComputerflash/thumbdrive(suggested)CourseGoalsandLearningOutcomesThiscoursesatisfiesneitherInstitutionalnorSystemGraduationRequirements.ItisrequiredforBachelorofMusicEducationpianomajors,andcountsasaMusicelectiveforothers.Studentswhohavecompletedthiscoursewillhave:1)demonstratedknowledgeofthehistory,modernconceptsofpianoteaching,theworkingsofthepiano,pianoplayingtechnique,andpianoteachingliterature.2)gainedskillinplanningandteachingpianolessonsandclasses,andworkingwithyoungstudents.3)createdaportfolioofmaterialsrelatedtooperatingaprofessionalmusicteachingstudio4)observedandcritiquedareapianoteachersgivinglessons.5)completedaresearchprojectintheareaofpianopedagogy.EvaluationandGradingEvaluationofstudents’workispartlysubjectiveandisbasedonthefulfillmentofassignments,qualityofwork,preparationforteachingassignments,andreliabilityinworkingwithyoungpianostudents.Gradingdistribution: MidtermExam 20% Classactivities(participation,observing,teaching) 40% Finalprojectandportfolio 40%Gradingscale: 90-100% A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D Below60% FD2L(DesireToLearn–foundatMyStateOnline)Courserecords,syllabus,andannouncementswillbekeptonD2L,accessibletoallSDSUstudents,whichmaybeviewedatanytime.Student-teachercorrespondencewillalsobedonethroughD2Le-mail.
