NEIL BEDFORD Neil Bedford is a British photographer who has worked with the Indie/Alternative magazine Clash as well as GQ Style and The Green Soccer Journal among his magazine work and with brands such as Adidas and Paul Smith.

His style is unique and simple; his photography of people is often close up which is a style I like and works well for magazines especially for the cover page. Bedford often uses black and white within his photos for a monochrome looks, which makes the images stand out and look individual. Another technique that Bedford uses within his photos is the use of shadows to insinuate features and create empathise on certain aspects of the photo. This technique catches attention and would draw people into the magazine.

EMMA SUMMERTON Emma Summerton is an Australian world renown fashion photographer who works for magazines such as many different international editions of Vogue as well as fashion companies and shops ect alike. Her work is based on the use of highlighting and working with colours, as this allows for her photographs to stand out and attract audiences. Another important aspect of Summerton’s work is scale and texture; she experiments with scale to focus in and the different textures create a contrast within her photos to draw the audiences around the page. These effects and techniques create a modern graphic edge which makes Summerton’s work stand out from the rest.

As shown below colour is an important aspect of her work, which creates an eye catching cover that jumps out at audiences and this is inspired by her Australian roots and upbringing. I personally really like this use of colour and will take this into consideration while creating my magazine.

MIKE MASSARO Mike Massaro is a London based photographer who specialises in shooting portraits, events and commissions within the music industry. He has worked with magazines such as DIY Magazine, music companies such as Universal Music, Island Music and MTV and his music event work includes V Fest.

I was drawn to Massaro for the cover shoot of Bastille he did for the magazine DIY. I really liked the way that the colours of the black and white worked and then the iridescent circle to pull the page together. This use of circles, shadows and light are key factors within Massaro’s work.

Typography is the way of design with letters where the text is arranged with different text sizes, spaces between letters and words, line length and types faces/fonts. This looks creates both text that is easy to read and locate which also looks attractive and appealing to audiences. This use of typography is evident from the way that each edition of Ray Gun has a different cover design. The use of working with primarily text in a number of different ways and style is Carson’s signature style, making him renown for being an innovative and quirky graphic designer.

Carson was born in Texas and grew up in Florida the place he calls “most home”. Carson is not just a graphic designer but also when he was younger was a professional surfer and reached the rank of 9th in the world. His work became later influenced by Hans-Rudolf Lutz a Swiss graphic designer whose workshop Carson attended.

Carson’s graphic design career really took off after he began working for Ray Gun after being hired by Marvin Scott Jarrett to be the designer for the magazine. Working to create Ray Gun allowed Carson’s work to be acknowledge by a wider audience which allowed him to branch off and start his own studio David Carson Design; this lead to Carson working for massive brands such as Pepsi Cola, Ray Ban, Nike, Giorgio Armani and many work which promoted his work to a worldwide scale.
