‘Using black-and-white photography was really important to creating the supermodel. Every time I tried to shoot them in colour, because their beauty was close to perfection, it ended up looking like a bad cosmetics advert. With black and white, you can really see who they are. It toned down the commercial interpretation that colour gives. What’s so striking about black and white is how it really helps a sense of reality to come through.’

Iain Carnegie and Jon-Paul Kitching- Magazine Creator

Clash was created in 2004 and was founded by four main people- Iain Carnegie (art director), Jon-Paul Kitching (advertising director), Simon Harper (editor) and John O’Rourke (publisher). This magazine includes topics such as fashion, art and music. I really like the design that is on the front cover of the magazine as I think that it is minimalistic which is the theme that I am going for. As it has such a simplistic design, this attracts the Indie audience because it is one of the main Indie magazine conventions, it also includes artists that are appealing for the Indie audience and stand out to certain people.

Jefferson Hack and Rankin -Magazine Creator

Jefferson Hack has founded the popular Indie magazine ‘Dazed’ in 1991 with photographer Rankin Waddell. In 2006, Hack and Rankin launched ‘Dazed’ digital to deliver daily exclusives in fashion, film, music and art. There is the same red ribbon of idealism and style running through the decades between 1991 and now. I think that the design of this magazine is aesthetically pleasing and attracts many audiences from over the world. This magazine is another that also has a simplistic approach to it which I think is a strong feature for Indie magazines. As they had created it at such a young age, it proves that this magazine has been and will be a long-lasting success in the magazine industry which adds to its unique touch.
