Dear parents and carers,
What a week of grotty weather we have had! There have still been many lovely activities and events which I am pleased to include reports from the children about; we’ve also got a few other pieces of information to keep you up to date.
Lovely paired editing work in Year 2
Parent Governor Election Earlier this week we sent out ballot forms for the Parent Governor election.
Each parent may vote for one candidate. As indicated on the ballot paper, you vote by marking an X alongside the name of the parent you support.
Please return your voting paper in an envelope marked clearly with your name as well as that of your child and their class. Should you wish your vote to be confidential we recommend you use a second blank inner envelope. Your voting paper should be placed in the unmarked inner envelope and this should be placed in an outer envelope marked clearly with your name as well as that of your child and their class. Please note that envelopes without names will not be counted, as we must ensure that they are from parents who are entitled to vote.
You are entitled to 1 vote, per parent or legal guardian, per family. E.g. Mum and Dad can vote once each if they have 1 child in school. If Mum and Dad have 2 or more children in school, they can still only have 1
vote each. If you are a legal guardian of a child or children in school, you are entitled to a vote.
The envelope should then be returned to school no later than next Wednesday 19th June 2019.
If you have any questions or have not received your ballot paper, please contact Les McGee in the school office.
We The Curious, Bristol https://www.wethecurious.org/
‘On Tuesday 11th June, Year 5 travelled to We The Curious in Bristol. This was to help us with our Science topics. I liked everything especially making my own animations.’ Sihan
‘I enjoyed ‘We The Curious’ because it is a great family place to learn lots about Science. My favourite part was making our own animations using Lego people and re-watching our reaction to noises in slow-motion. We even got to see how it felt being a foetus in a woman’s womb!’ Amelia Practical investigations at We The Curious

‘I especially enjoyed the 3D planetarium because we went on a journey through space which included visiting ‘The Rose’ on Saturn and the Frost Fields of Pluto.’ Harvey
‘My favourite part of the trip was when we had a photo taken of our shadows and it imprinted them on the wall.’ Finley F
"It was amazing. We got to go in a human sized hamster wheel and saw our own shadows imprinted on the wall!" Jackson "My favourite part was the Planetarium because it was all in 3D and was very interesting to learn about space." Chanya Exploring pollination at ‘We The Curious’
Phoebe’s Cake Sale A huge thank you for your support of Phoebe R, who held a cake sale earlier in the week to raise funds for the Tanzanian uji project. I am pleased to share with you, that Phoebe raised a brilliant £59.55 which will be shared with our colleagues upon their arrival next week.
Year 5 Engineering Experience at The Chase High
Report by Harriet and Emmeline.
On June 12th 2019, eight children from Year 5 had the amazing opportunity to visit The Chase for an STEM experience where they learnt about engineering and technology. We learnt about where we would see 3D imagery in everyday life such as: TV, cinema, gaming, architecture and medicine.
We had a chance to see a 3D printer (worth £3000.00!) in progress and we also watched a video about a restaurant in London, called ‘Food Ink’, which served 3D
printed food. At the moment, it is the only one of its kind. Then, we printed out a model of the ‘Empire State Building’ in green. They let us take it home!
We used an app on the laptops called ‘Tinkercad’. It’s free to use but you do need to have an email address. We had the choice to make either a dinosaur or a skeleton by fixing the body parts together. We were able to zoom in and rotate the pieces into their slots. After a few tries most people just made a new creation and we had a few minutes to play around with the app. Everyone who went really enjoyed themselves and didn’t want to go back home. Here’s what we had to say:
‘It was a wonderful day out and I really enjoyed my time at the lovely place!’
Harriet.
‘The trip to the Chase was an exciting opportunity and I loved watching the 3D printer in action but it took one and a half hours!’ Emmeline.
‘The best part of the trip in my opinion was when the 3D printer made a building and we were able to see and touch it!’ Riley.
"When we visited the Chase, we started talking about where we would see 3D imagery in everyday life: TV, cinema, gaming etc. They had a 3D printer which used plastic to produce 3D models. We watched it make a mini Empire State Building but it took an hour. We used software called Tinkercad and built skeletons and dinosaurs in 3D. I really enjoyed this trip." Josie 5JB.

Year 2 Guide Dog for the Blind visitors Year 2 had a visit from representatives and dogs from Guide Dogs for the Blind earlier this week. The children learnt about how guide dogs are trained, difficulties people have when they are visually impaired and what it was like to lose their sight and get a guide dog.
‘When I was blindfolded it was scary. I only had the metal stick to try and find my way around.’ Seth
‘It was weird when I was blindfolded. It only took me 5 seconds to find the letter F but blindfolded it took me ages! I was quite scared because I could only feel the letters.’ Faith
‘We learnt so much about Guide dogs and how they are trained.’ Ebony
‘It was great to see pictures of the guide dogs in training and hear about how they help people.’ Mylo
‘It was fascinating to learn new facts and learn about special gadgets blind people use to help them.’ Amelia
‘Nathaniel demonstrated how to pour water into a mug using a beeper.’ Jackson
‘Sheila showed us Taylor's special harness that has a special glow in the dark piece at the front. It was funny when Sheila picked it up because Taylor thought he was going out!’ Dexter
‘It made me realise how visually impaired people find it difficult to do everyday things.’ Lily F

Careers Week Next week, we have our first ever Careers Week. We are looking forward to welcoming so many visitors in to speak to the children about what their job entails and we hope that it opens our pupils’ eyes to what opportunities may be out there in the future. More in next week’s letter!
Term dates 2019-2020 You may have heard in the news this week, that the decision has been made to move the early May Bank Holiday to coincide with the 75th Anniversary VE Day celebrations. Instead of the previously planned Monday 4th May, the Bank Holiday has been moved to the Friday 8th May 2020, so school will be closed on this date instead. I have included an amended version of the academic year’s term dates at the end of this letter.

Somers Star Rounders Team Our staff have joined the mixed league for Malvern rounders. Our captain, Mrs Williams, has gathered a strong team and so far the games have been great fun! Our team also consists of Mrs Smith, Miss Wickett, Mr Ballinger, Miss Marshall-Jones and Mrs Rose who are absent when the photo was taken.
From the children Year 4 have been writing poetry this week... I thought I’d share some with you as reading it has made my mouth water!
An ode to candyfloss Oh glorious candyfloss, you pink fluffy
cloud. You lush, sweet, pink heaven!
Like a sweet soft cotton ball gliding down my peckish throat,
You dissolve like a sugar beet onto my waiting tongue.
Inside, a beautiful cosy blanket, a magnificent cotton bud, a flavour is waiting
elegantly to bounce into my mouth. The very thought of you fills my heart,
With passion, joy and desire. Candyfloss.
Oh, glorious candyfloss, you sweet, kind substance.
You wondrous, dreamy, dissolving invention.
Like a ball bursting with sweet joy, You bounce longingly from your stick, with
sensational happiness. Between my teeth, you burst into what
seems like nothing. The very thought of you fills my heart with
joy, love and praise. Oh, glorious candyfloss, how I love thee.
by Lucy C and Anabelle B
An ode to toffee cheesecake Oh, glorious toffee cheesecake, you king
of gooey goodness! You delicious, delightful, daring dessert.
Like a golden sun brightening up my day, You decorate my mouth with astounding
toffee-filled joy. Between my teeth, your crumbly biscuit
bas blows my mind, With a crunch, munch, scrunch.
Toffee cheesecake.
Oh, glorious toffee cheesecake, you creamy moon brightening the night sky! You sweet, scrumptious, sticky delight.
Like a cloud of goodness floating down my oesophagus,
You fill my stomach with fantastic flavours. In my mouth, you leave a stream of
teasing toffee across my tongue. Just imagining you makes my day so
much brighter. Oh glorious toffee cheesecake, how I love
thee. By Liam C and Joel N
An ode to cherry Oh, glorious cherry, you queen of fruits.
You sweet, sticky, crimson delight, Like a ruby from a mountain of branches,
You transform my lunch into a tropical world of fruit.
Inside my mouth, you burst with tangy flavours.
The very thought of you fills me with a warm feeling of happiness,
With love, with amazement, with prettiness.
Cherry.
Oh, glorious cherry, you bright heart. You victorious, sugary, famous dessert. Like a volcano of short blasts of cherry
juice, You make my taste buds tingle at the taste
of you. Between my teeth, you explode into a
tornado of fun. Just imagining you makes me go dreamy, With sour, with shock, with gracefulness.
Oh glorious cherry, how I love thee. By Josie S and Lexie K
