    Objective Of The Study

    To study the existing frame work of performance appraisal.

    To test the effectiveness of the existing frame work by taking

    the feedback through discussions from the participating

    employees.

    To analyze the feedback received through discussions with the

    employees.

    To analyze how performance appraisal effects training &

    development of employees in the organization.

    METHODOLOGY

    Research Methodology

    Research design: Desk research.

    Research Instrument: Observation & literature

    Sampling technique: Census study of employees

    Sample size: 30 Employees.

    Data collection technique:

    Secondary data: From existing frame work, manuals, Internet websites,

    corporate website, Journals, Newspaper articles.

    Primary data: Through discussions with the employees, Questionnaire,

    Interviews.

    CONCLUSIONS

    The following are the expected conclusions from the research:

    Most of time Performance Appraisals in RITES, are for determining

    training need identification and for promotions etc.

    The performance appraisal has delinked itself from being an instrument of

    evaluating performance through performance review discussion and

    bringing about better performance in the organization.

    RITES should invest more time and energy in educating the reporting

    officers on how to conduct the appraisal to establish goals for the future,

    open channels of communication and strengthen the relationship between

    employer and employee.

    AN OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION

    INTRODUCTION RITES

    Being a Public Sector Enterprise, Registered under the Companies Act,

    RITES is managed and controlled by a Board of Directors, consisting of

    nine officials including the part-time Chairman. The Chief Executive is the

    Managing Director, who is assisted by three functional Directors, namely

    Director (Finance), Director (Technical and Director (Projects). Also

    included in the Board of Directors are four part-time Directors, two from

    the Ministry of Railways, one from the Ministry of Surface Transport and

    the fourth from the Ministry of External Affairs. There is a Company

    Secretary, who attends to legal requirements of the Companies Act,

    organizes the meetings of Board of Directors and also responsible for

    other related matters.

    Territorially, the Company has its Corporate Office at Plot No. 1, Sector

    29, Gurgaon which also house all the SBUs and Staff Divisions of

    Personnel and Administration, Finance and Accounts, Computer Services.

    The Rail Infrastructure Division which mainly handles the domestic

    projects and got Project Offices at Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai,

    Kolkata, Lucknow, Chennai, Nagpur and Secunderabad.

    The Quality Assurance which looks after the inspection and quality

    assurance work for materials and equipments offered by Railways and

    other Public Sector Undertakings has its headquarter at Corporate Office

    and have regional offices at Mumbai, Kolkata, Gurgaon, Chennai and

    Bhillai.

    LIMITATIONS

    Time Constraint

    Busy schedule of the employees

    Many people do not respond correctly.
