Helping you find a perfect matchTo excel in today’s highly challenging and competitive environment, your organisation needs the right people in the jobs that they’re suited to. Hay Group offers you the keys to unlocking your potential. Backed by almost 70 years of proven research and practice, our assessments can help you find the people you need to drive your business forward.

From broad organisational leadership and climate assessments, to individual evaluations at all job levels, we’ve got the right solution for you.

You’re in safe hands with Hay Group’s assessments. We are unmatched when it comes to making the connection between individual competencies, specific role requirements and performance.

Our wide range of assessments - including our unique interviewing approach which is recognised worldwide as the industry benchmark – are based on the work of Dr David McClelland, who began the global competency movement. He also founded Hay Group’s global competency database, which was used by international psychologist and writer Daniel Goleman to create the emotional intelligence inventory.

Combine this experience with our unique job evaluation methodology which we pioneered in 1948, and no-one can come close to helping you understand your people and their ability to perform in a role like we can.

Our assessments can help you:

§ match people to roles they’re best suited to

§ gain insights on your people and organisation

§ identify your talent of today and future stars

§ choose people for development programmes

§ find leaders when your business changes

§ compare your people with our global benchmarks

§ improve how your leadership teams work together.

Experience the results of our assessments:

§ improved bottom-line performance

§ increased employee motivation, retention and engagement

§ efficiencies by hiring the right person for the job the first time – plus they’ll be more likely to stay

§ a solid foundation for talent management and succession planning.

We’ve helped over 10,000 clients globally – including over half of the FTSE 250 and FORTUNE 500 – to make the best use of their people and improve performance.

Accurate, independent and global assessments

Hay Group is one of the world’s largest and most experienced providers of assessment and human capital services. You can be confident that you’re partnering with the best.

From global financial services and oil and gas organisations, to European-wide retail companies, and UK engineering and manufacturing firms – we help clients from a range of sectors and sizes to find the right people for their business and improve performance. No-one can deliver assessments better.

So if you’re ready to reap the benefits of our assessments and drive organisational performance, we’d love to talk to you.

Our global reach

Consistently accurate

Having been in the business for almost 70 years, we know what we’re doing. No other provider understands the link between the job, people and performance like we do.

We’ve developed proven, accurate and flexible assessment methods, enabling our clients to increase their performance by having the right people working in the roles that they’re best suited for.

Wholly independent

As a privately owned company, the work we do is always independent, objective and driven solely by the needs of our clients.

Unlike headhunters and recruitment providers, we don’t have vested interests in candidates or gain financially from role placements. Our independent assessments will identify the right person for your business.

Truly global

From large cities like London, New York, and Hong Kong; to smaller cities and towns. With over 2,600 people, we have the scale and capability to seamlessly deliver assessments wherever you need them.

Worldwide, our accredited assessors deliver our assessments to a globally consistent method and standard. You get reliable, high-quality insights that enable you to make informed decisions.

The quality of your people, the depth of their knowledge as assessors and about us as a business,

and their willingness to go the extra mile set Hay Group apart from all the rest.

Global head of assessment, leading global financial services organisation

Why an independent opinion helps

§ Diversify. The best person for the job often has a different background and outlook to you, and new, different ideas. Objective assessment helps you find these people and avoid employing the same sorts of people.

§ Spot potential. We can help you spot someone who might be a great employee or leader but hasn’t yet had the chance to shine. We look beyond what they’re doing in their current role to see whether they have the potential to develop.

§ Seeing people clearly. Our independent perspective helps give you a more rounded view of an individual. If you are recruiting externally, we can discover patterns of behaviour and provide an informed opinion.

Hay Group assessments aren’t conducted from an ivory tower. You get experienced assessors who have also worked in jobs and organisations like yours.

Our professionals therefore are better able to connect with individuals being assessed and put them at ease. This enables us to draw out much deeper insights and understand behaviours, thereby providing richer and more accurate findings. Based on this robust data, our assessors make sound and informed judgements.

Don’t expect our reports to read like an academic journal. Following the assessment, we’ll provide you with insights that are clear, easy to interpret, and in business language that relates to the individual’s ability to perform in a job.

We’ve become renowned for the quality of our assessments, for transforming findings into insights, and turning insights into action. With Hay Group, you get expert help to see the way forward so you can make your business better - it’s how we make a difference.

”“

What’s it like partnering with Hay Group?

We love doing assessments. Why? Because nothing makes us happier than supporting people and organisations to realise their potential and improve bottom-line performance.

What got you here will not get you there: measuring for potential, not just performance.

Potential interview

This structured one hour interview gets to the heart of people’s ways of learning, how they cope with difficult situations, how far they can stretch their perspective and think through consequences. This technique allows us to quickly assess people’s capacity to step up and to learn.

Growth Factor inventory (GFI)

The GFI is a 360º research-based and cost effective survey that assesses the four growth factors identified in our model opposite and current performance.

It allows you to quickly plot people’s true potential and current performance to make effective decisions, and see if their peers view their potential in the same way as their line manager.

Unlocking your potential

Whether you’re recruiting your next CEO, wanting to understand your talent pipeline, or need to assess thousands of people across your organisation – we’ll work with you to develop a robust assessment programme that’s matched to your objectives.

Hay Group has a comprehensive and flexible range of assessments - ranging from bespoke assessments, customised solutions, to off-the-shelf tools - which can be tailored and combined to your requirements.

Behavioural event interview (BEI)

The best predictor of an individual’s future performance is their past performance. In just three hours, our BEI semi-structured interview process digs deep into people’s performance; not just what they do but how they do it, and their approaches to solving problems and managing others.

We think you’ll agree with our clients about the BEI’s power in finding the right person for the right role if you give it a try. And it’s not just experience - our own and others’ research supports the validity of this approach.

Assessment centres

Using a combination of role plays, case studies, psychometrics and interviews, we can create a bespoke assessment centre. The centre allows you to work alongside experienced Hay Group professionals and find the right people for your organisation or identity your best talent.

Of course, all the assessment tools here can also be used for development purposes. But when all the participants are internal, a whole host of multi-rater surveys can be used to help drive performance.

Emotional and Social Competency Inventory survey This 360º survey is based on Daniel Goleman’s model of emotional intelligence (EI) and we continue to work with him to make links between EI and performance. Perhaps more importantly, we help managers receiving this feedback understand how their behaviour is perceived by others and how they can have the impact they desire.

Customised 360º assessment tools We have a variety of means of turning your competency model into a differentiating 360º survey. And we can even turn Talent Q into a preferences survey that’s also linked to your competencies. We’d love to show you how.

Assessments for development

Assessments for selection

Leadership Styles survey This is one of our most powerful tools for helping leaders grow. A 180º survey that helps managers understand the difference between the styles they intend to use (self-report) and those perceived by their direct reports. This rich feedback allows leaders to consider how to be more flexible, broaden their repertoire and ensure they use the right style at the right time. This survey has the best impact if combined with our Organisational Climate survey (see below).

Organisational Climate surveyThe jewel in the crown – our research and this survey has a proven link to performance. The climate, key aspects of the work environment, accounts for up to 30 per cent of the variance in performance, and are driven by the styles of the individual leader. The picture painted by climate allows leaders to see where they can directly improve performance and where to focus their efforts.

Talent Q

These unique, online, work-focused psychometric tools (30 minutes) assess:

§ personality attributes such as traits, narrative, derailers, personality type and customised role profile matches

§ abilities such as numerical, logical and verbal reasoning.

The Talent Q tools are useful to support the BEI, or stand alone for broad based assessments, with Talent Q’s unique role match methodology to help you see how well individuals fit with what’s critical in the role. Line managers can readily see differences between individuals.

Superior results assessing potential and performance

After an assessment, we’ll send you a clear, concise and visually rich report about the person or people we’ve assessed and what the results mean for your organisation. But we don’t stop there. As part of our service, a Hay Group consultant will spend time with you to explain the findings and provide guidance to help move your organisation forward.

ü Results in your language

We never use technical, academic and psychological jargon that makes the findings difficult to understand. We write our reports in clear language and relate the findings to your business and the specific role.

ü Insight and impact

You’ll get a clear explanation of what the findings mean and expert advice from our experienced consultants about how to use the findings to help your people perform better. You’ll also get a report that tells you about the person’s ability to do the job, not just about them as an individual.

ü The complete picture

We can assess individuals, teams, departments or your whole organisation and provide unique insights on all four. If we’ve used different tools to assess the same person a few times, we’ll also put all our findings together into one report so you quickly and easily get the complete picture.

ü Global benchmarks

Because we have the largest combined leadership, reward, employee attitude and organisational structure databases in the world, we are able to connect data and reveal insights that you will not get from anyone else.

ü Customised benchmarks

We can also use your data to compare your people and teams. We’ll add your metrics to the reports and make them specific to your organisation.

Assessments that identify the right person for the role

“We now have a clear process to help us ensure that we have visibility of the leadership pipeline. This process is amongst the best I have seen in my experience as a board member.”

Dick Olver, Chairman BAE Systems

Having grown through significant acquisitions, BAE Systems wanted a talent management strategy that helped them spot and develop people with the greatest potential to manage the expanding business, retain talent and lead BAE Systems in the future.

Our understanding of strategy and the leadership behaviours required to drive strategic imperatives enabled us to identify mission-critical roles and determine the competencies required for superior performance.

Using our diagnostic tools, we assessed BAE Systems’ top 100 executives against the criteria and fit against roles. This was followed with development advice and coaching sessions.

Through our work:

§ BAE Systems is now better prepared to move the right people into the right roles to achieve business results and manage senior executives’ careers.

§ Leadership is clear on the future potential of key talent. We also highlighted opportunities to move individuals into roles they had not initially been considered for.

§ The assessments of top leadership at BAE Systems, along with individual and business performance data, have become one of the primary sources of information to help leadership manage the development and progression of talent within their organisation.

Assessments that improve performance

Hay Group helped a major UK retail bank to develop 507 leaders through an assessment and leadership development programme.

The results were impressive. After one year, diagnostic surveys showed how the work fed straight through to financial and business results:

§ 73 per cent of leaders improved their working environment (climate) and motivation of their team.

§ Retail mortgage sales leaders exceeded their targets, resulting in a 26 per cent increase in sales.

§ Absenteeism reduced by 25 per cent.

§ Employee engagement and enablement increased by six per cent and four per cent respectively.

§ Over half of customer satisfaction levels improved.

The value generated in terms of cost savings and increased revenue amounts to approximately £27,500 per leader – reflecting over seven times return on investment.

Assessments that develop individuals

When ‘Jim’ was part of a talent audit delivered by Hay Group, he thought it would be the same as previous HR exercises he’d been through. He dutifully completed the surveys, convinced his team to do the same and met with a Hay Group consultant to discuss his role and challenges.

What he hadn’t expected was the level and depth of insight he received from the assessment which has since helped him become a more effective leader. Five years later he called us to help his team have the same experience. He told us:

“The feedback session was my road to Damascus. If I hadn’t had that session I wouldn’t have been promoted, I wouldn’t be the leader I am today. I want my team to have the same experience and insight so they can improve too.”

This is just one example of the value individuals get from our assessments. We’re routinely told:

“This is the most insightful report I’ve ever had”.

Delivering strong returns for clients

“ Leadership styles and climate data revealed how our store managers are leading, and the impact they have. Now, I know who our great leaders are – I was only guessing before.

Support beyond assessments

If you need support post assessment, we can help. At Hay Group, our focus is on making change happen. We work with leaders to transform strategy into reality and help people and organisations realise their potential. We’ve been researching, assessing and learning about people, work and jobs for almost 70 years – you simply won’t find experience, knowledge and data like ours anywhere else.

Development and coaching programmes

Through assessments that we’ve delivered, our clients have uncovered high performers and future leaders for their organisation. But how do you foster this potential so that these employees develop the confidence and ability to advance through the ranks?

Our development and coaching programmes help individuals to: deepen their self-awareness; develop competencies; understand their impact on others and organisational performance; and construct an action plan to work on these areas. By developing your people, you will see a return on investment through sustained organisational improvement.

On-boarding

Findings from our research with FORTUNE on the World’s Most Admired Companies shows that these organisations place great emphasis on looking after their workforces. They carefully integrate new hires and keep their skills sharp once they’re on-board.

Succession management

Ensuring a smooth succession to top jobs is essential – particularly as business is changing rapidly and demographic shifts mean a whole generation of leaders will soon be leaving the workforce.

We can help you ensure you have the right people in the right place. Hay Group’s unique promotion suitability analysis brings together our deep understanding of the demands of different jobs with an appreciation of their ‘role types’ so we maximise your leaders’ chances of success in any new role.

Given today’s ever changing business environment you can’t rely on the same leadership capabilities if you want to continue to grow. With more than 40 years of specialised leadership research, we know what the best leaders do.

To accelerate leadership transformation, we take an integrated approach. This includes assisting CEOs in enhancing the effectiveness of their teams, developing companies’ management and leadership talent at all levels, and providing individual coaching to leaders and professionals in critical positions.

Leadership transformation

We can help you develop an on-boarding process that will engage, retain, and accelerate productivity of any employee – whether they are new to the organisation or new to the role. And we can also provide you with comparative pay data.

A world-class talent management programme aligns with business strategy and creates a pipeline of ‘future stars’ ready to drive their organisation to the next level.

Drawing on our global research, we can help you identify who your current performers are (or reveal the gaps in the pipeline) so that the flow of talent never dries up.
