Boys and Girls Club of the Fox Valley

At 6’6”, Jerry Overstreet towers over the students at Roosevelt when he comes to visit. But when he greets the students “Street”, the name students refer to him as, greets them at their level with a smile and genuine interest about how they are doing. He is returned with many smiles and handshakes as the students pass by him.

Street is part of the Youth Development Team at the Boys and Girls Club of the Fox Valley. He

coordinates activities for students at the Club that reinforces the importance of doing well in school by having ‘Power Hour’ where members can get help with homework. He also has them participate in the community and offers special events for teens such as fishing club, sports, multicultural dances and opportunities to record songs in a recording booth. “What do you wanna do?” is the motto of the CLUB Teen Center. Street adds the motto “Come one, come all”; come as an individual, but work to-gether and help each other out. Membership to the Club is free for Roosevelt and KA students.

At Roosevelt, Jerry Overstreet holds a meeting every Tuesday called Teen Outreach Initiative (TOI). He works in collaboration with AASD and BGC to provide mentoring for primarily English Lan-guage Learners. During this time he talks to students about their fears and concerns they are having at the time. He reminds them with positive words of encouragement, “Surround yourself with the kind of people you would like to be like,” and “Let your haters be your motivators.” Students look forward to spending time with Street because he understands them and makes them feel good about them-selves.
