Aaron EbnerAlso affectionately known as Ronnie here in Peru.None of what youre about to read would exist withoutthis guy. Hes the one that made it all happen.
AASD Family
Genie RogstadGenie takes care of all the administrative work in Michiganso we can continue to function as a legal non profitorganization. And to say that EVERYBODY wins from herannual visit to Peru is an understatement!
Tina NoveroTeenz has been around since day one. Shes the brains behind
the INKAcase project and will continue to represent the AASDand make us proud in 2014 as a Fulbright scholar in the
Philippines.
Cheryl HedgesAmong MANY things, Hedges has been the best at keeping us
all in check when its time to get down to business. Fromfinancials to INKAcase dimensions, her systematic ways have
become embedded in the AASD culture. And trust us - thats aood thin .
Adam StieglitzRonnies official partner in crime. Safe to say he does a little bit
of everything down in Peru... including turning heads on thestreets of Cuzco dressed as an Incan women (Dont worry, its
usually on Halloween)
Ruben Huaman QuispeCan we just say hes the man and leave it at that? No?? Ok.Well, hes our community representative, lead agriculturetechnician, and cultural liaison. Oh, and hes the man.
Kat GordonNot only making sure that we grow our veggies, but that weeat them as well. Kat, our ecological expert, represents theAASD wherever she goes... including amongst the localhippie scene.
Alfredo OrtizYep, its officially the year that this guy gets the nod. His adviceand consulting is always good enough to get us out of a bind...even if his methods usually involve making us figure it out forourselves.
Leroy Rogers Ebner-StieglitzAlso known as: Lee-broy, the most handsomest man alive, the
Antonio Banderas of Calca, the Doggie lottery winner, and mostimportantly - the Director of Morale. He exists to brighten
peoples day... all. over. town.
Chris MillerChris volunteered with the AASD for 6 months in 2012. He leftto go finish his masters degree in Egypt, and soon realized he
just couldnt get enough of us. Now hes back, full-time, andsharing his passion for hard work and good times with the rest
of us.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD
Dear Friend and AASD Donor:Its been a great year for the Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development. We arepleased to share all of AASDs successes and achievements in the 2013 Annual Report.2013 was the year of sustainability for the AASD. We have always considered ourselves a
unique organization that does not fit the mold of most development and non profitinstitutions. Our unique approach focuses on collaboration and community led progress andwe are happy to say that this approach has started to pay off.Traditionally, the AASD has been very involved in the planning and implementation ofgreenhouse projects in Lares. In 2013 the community of Cochayoc and the Laresgovernment built a beautiful school greenhouse for the Cochayoc school with minimalconsultation from the AASD. This is an important indicator of sustainability for the AASD.The projects we started are being scaled up locally without our help!
You will notice that the AASDs accomplishments are great, yet our budget is small.Development organizations in Peru spend hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to havean impact similar to the AASD. Our community led and collaborative approach allows us tokeep costs down. We only work on projects that are truly needed and desired by thecommunity and the local government. Communities provide thousands of hours of work andthe government provides tens of thousands of dollars of materials. For every dollar that theAASD spends another three dollars is donated in labor and materials from local sources. We also benefit from the donated hours of dozens of graduate students and their professors
at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS). By leveraging these resources theAASD is able to keep costs low and impact high. Our innovative approach to development has been recognized in 2013 in two ways. First, the AASD was a finalist for the Arcus Center Global Price for Social Justice Leadership byaddressing irresponsible development in Peru. Secondly, AASD founders were honored toteach a course on community social change at the Monterey Institute of InternationalStudies. We send out a very heartfelt thank you, gracias, and supaiki to all of you who allowed usto do such great things in 2013. It is an honor to represent our donors in the indigenouscommunities of Peru. We will continue to challenge what it means to be a developmentorganization and continue collaborating to support community led development.Sincerely,
Adam Stieglitz and Aaron EbnerBoard Members and Co-Founders

Greenhouses have been the AASDssignature project since 2010. After 3 yearswe are proud to report a wide-range ofsustainable outcomes. All AASDgreenhouses are producing vegetables, and more importantly, the communities aredoing it by themselves. 2013 also markeda milestone for the community ofCcochayoc. They proved that a communityin need of a greenhouse can make ithappen without outside assistance. TheAASD helped with some planning andtraining, but at the end of the day it wasthe community that mobilized thegovernment, built the greenhouse, andtook charge of ensuring that theirchildren are living a happy and well-nourished lifestyle.
Sustainability Spotlight
! In Ccochayoc the community and schoolorganized 18 faenas (community work days)where community members committedthemselves to put their farming aside andcontribute to building the greenhouse.
! The government purchased and transported allmaterials for the greenhouse in Ccochayoc thatcant be located locally, including plastic andmetal.
! As the AASDs direct intervention becomes lessand less necessary the schools faculty aretaking more ownership and creating newinnovative farming techniques
! The government has allocated resources toprovide a technician to train with the AASD,and eventually take over all local capacitybuilding.
! Communities have become more familiar withthe process if they are interested in having agreenhouse; they understand there are certainresponsibilities they must assume and they aretaking them on happily.

Now that AASD greenhouseprojects are being sustained by thecommunity, Ruben Quispue,AASDs lead agriculture technician, has decided to make good use ofhis newly found free time.
Combining his passion ofbeekeeping with helping thecommunity of Choquecancha,Ruben has taken the lead on aproject to teach women andstudents about bees, beekeeping, and the production and sales ofbee products.
Whats so sustainable about that??
! Honey, pollen, wax, and propolis are all bee products indemand locally and abroad. Not only will selling these
products support the project, but participants families aswell!
! The methods of bee keeping that Ruben teaches are cost
effective and easily scaleable within the community.
! The whole project can be created and maintained locally,
without the use of external resources.
! Provides a natural source of sugar that is healthy for the
families.
! Beekeeping is also environmentally friendly becausewhen bees forage they increase levels of fertilization and
lead to high yields and healthy harvests.

This year marked a hugemilestone as other organizationsbegan taking ownership of theirrole and responsibilities for thesustainability of the network. Forthe first time other organizationtook the lead in organizingmeetings, hosting events, andtrying to raise money to supportthis collaborative movement forresponsible development. It isstarting to feel less like an AASDproject and more of its ownentity... which is a great indicato
of success and sustainability!

WomensEmpowerment:INKAcase
In 2013 the Wiay WarmiWomens Group took theinitiative to improve theirweaving, diversify their skills, and do whatever it takes tobecome a strongrepresentative of theircommunity. As the womenimprove their cornerstoneproduct - textiles - the AASDhas continued to supportthem. The INKAcase productline has proven to be asuccessful and sustainableendeavor for both thewomens group and theAASD. Just this year alonewe have sold INKAcases on6 different continents, generating over $6,000 inrevenue!

In 2013 the AASD began collaborating withNios del Sol - a local orphanage in Calca -to offer a new way for students to learnabout farming and their culture. Each week12-15 students come to the AASDDemonstration Farm to make compost piles, prepare beds, water the greenhouse andplay with Leroy (Director of Morale!) Thisproject is not only fun for all who areinvolved, but it is also a great way for localindigenous youth to be put back in touchwith the roots and history of their culture.

This year the AASD was elected to sit on theregional board of directors for SGP (sistemagarantizada participativa) -- a national programthat makes it easy for small-scale farmers to
become certified ecological (even better thanorganic!). All members of this program are partof a movement to support local farmers whoproduce organic and ecological produce. As SGPgains popularity entire communities are becomingmore conscious of supporting local farmers, aswell as eating healthier.
Social Justice Award
SGP
In 2013 the AASD were finalists in the ArcusFoundation Award, that aims to advance the worldmost pressing social justice issues. The AASD wasrecognized for addressing injustice in developmentmore specifically, by highlighting organizations thause impoverished communities as a means to raisemoney and advance themselves as an organization
The AASD argued it should be the norm thatorganizations seek out strong communityrepresentatives to take ownership of their owndevelopment, rather than become dependent onoutside assistance.

The relationship between the AASDand MIIS has always been a perfectportrayal of mutual benefit. 2013marked the fourth year of ourpartnership, but it will be officiallysustained after signing a memorandumof understanding this year. The
students and faculty at MIIS continueto work with - and inspire - the AASDby bringing innovative minds andideas to our organization. In return theAASD offers real life challenges, successes, and opportunities forstudents of development studies toimmerse themselves in a powerful
experiential learning process.
2012 Accomplishments
! AASD co-founders Aaron Ebner and Adam Stieglitztaught a course called Community Social Change, where we used current AASD projects to explore thecomplexities of development.
! A group of five faculty members at MIIS were awardeda grant to partner with the AASD in researching theeffects of access and connectivity for the communities
we work with in Peru.
! The AASD worked with a group of students in Montereyto design an evaluation for the AASDs greenhouseprojects.
! The AASD hosted a total of seven students in Peruthroughout the year. Their contributions to the AASDincluded a needs assessment for a bee project, designing a best-practices manual for familygreenhouses, and researching how to help small scalefarmers sell organic produce locally.
