Welcome Newcomers!

We are blessed to have you with us today. Please sign our newcomer’s book at the

back of the church, introduce yourself to the priest, and join us for coffee hour in the

Parish Hall immediately after the service, just across the courtyard.

Our hope is that you find a home among us, in a place where the love of God is shared,

the mystery of grace is experienced and the joy and laughter of the Christian life is

taught.

To learn more about St. Alban’s, you can schedule an appointment with Father Dave

by calling the office at (619) 444-8212 or email us at:

[email protected]. Also, check out our website at www.st-albans-

church.org.

Children are welcome in our worship! Child care and Sunday School are available in the building across the

courtyard at 9:30am. Older children return to the church for the children’s sermon and Communion. Children’s

bulletins, coloring books, and crayons are available in the back of the church for use during the service. Please

return crayons. Thank you!

Flowers today are given to the glory of God.

Have you ever wondered how we get such beautiful flowers at St. Alban’s on Sundays? They

are paid for by parishioners who dedicate flowers to commemorate a special occasion such as

an anniversary, a baptism, a birthday, a graduation, or in memory of departed loved ones. If you

would like to dedicate flowers for a special occasion or memorial, you can do so by filling out a

flower donation envelope found in the narthex (the main church entrance), place your check or

cash in the envelope and put it in the offering plate.

To maintain a peaceful worship environment, please silence your cell phone. Thank you!

ACCESSIBLE RESTROOMS ARE LOCATED IN THE PARISH HALL ACROSS THE COURTYARD

HOLY EUCHARIST – RITE II * = Please stand during the hymns as you are able.

PRELUDE

WELCOME

* OPENING HYMN AND PROCESSION – LEVAS pg. L44 – “Blessed Absolom” (v. 1-5)

THE INVITATION

Celebrant: O Lord, touch our lips with your saving grace,

People: that our lives may declare your praise!

The Gloria – Hymnal pg. S-280

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray.

4

Set us free, heavenly Father, from every bond of prejudice and fear; that, honoring the steadfast courage of your

servant Absalom Jones, we may show forth in our lives the reconciling love and true freedom of the children of

God, which you have given us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy

Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

the Word of God

THE FIRST LESSON – Isaiah 42:5-9 Lector: A Reading from the book of Isaiah:

Thus says God, the LORD,

who created the heavens and stretched them out,

who spread out the earth and what comes from it,

who gives breath to the people upon it

and spirit to those who walk in it:

I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness,

I have taken you by the hand and kept you;

I have given you as a covenant to the people,

a light to the nations,

to open the eyes that are blind,

to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,

from the prison those who sit in darkness.

I am the LORD, that is my name;

my glory I give to no other,

nor my praise to idols.

See, the former things have come to pass,

and new things I now declare;

before they spring forth,

I tell you of them.

Lector: Here ends the Reading.

People: Amen.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM - Psalm 137:1-6 Page 792, BCP

1By the waters of Babylon we sat down and

wept, *

when we remembered you, O Zion.

2As for our harps, we hung them up *

on the trees in the midst of that land.

3For those who led us away captive asked us for a

song,

and our oppressors called for mirth: *

“Sing us one of the songs of Zion.”

4How shall we sing the LORD’s song *

upon an alien soil?

5If I forget you, O Jerusalem, *

let my right hand forget its skill.

6Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth

if I do not remember you, *

if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy.

5

THE EPISTLE – Galatians 5:1-5

Lector: A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians:

For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Listen! I,

Paul, am telling you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. Once again I

testify to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obliged to obey the entire law. You who want to

be justified by the law have cut yourselves off from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. For through the

Spirit, by faith, we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.

Lector: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

A period of silence is kept.

Please stand as you are able for the hymn and remain standing for the Gospel.

Sequence Hymn – Hymnal pg. 529, “In Christ there is no East or West”

THE GOSPEL – John 15:12-15

Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People: Glory to you Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love

than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not

call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you

friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.”

Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sequence Hymn - Hymnal pg. 529, “In Christ there is no East or West”

THE SERMON – The Reverend Lonell Wright

(Please sit in silent prayer after the sermon)

* NICENE CREED - (Please stand, if you are able, for the reading)

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

6

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

* THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE – (please stand or kneel if you are able)

Intercessor: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Intercessor: Dear friends in Christ, as we gather for worship this morning, we bring with us the day’s cares

and concerns. I now invite you to offer to God those things which give joy to, or burden, your

heart. For whom shall we pray?

your mercy hear out prayers,

7

Pakistan, Tunisia, Eritrea, Yemen, Nigeria, and Somalia who are suffering deprivation, torture,

Province of West Africa, who are heavily affected by the current Ebola pandemic.

mercy hear our prayers,

Celebrant: O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to

preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere

may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all

flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE CONFESSION

Celebrant: There come those moments when we stand exposed, our failings, our hurtful words, our harmful

ways open for all to see. But God takes these moments, and these sins, redeeming them through

compassion and love, making us new people, children of the Living God. Let us come, in these

moments, with our prayers to the One who waits to forgive us and make us whole. Let us join

together and pray, saying;

Celebrant and People:

Almighty and most merciful Father,

we have wandered and strayed from your ways

like lost sheep.

We have followed too much the devices and desires

of our own hearts.

We have offended against your holy laws.

We have left undone those things

that we ought to have done;

and we have done those things

that we ought not to have done;

and there is no health in us.

But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Spare those who confess their faults.

Restore those who are penitent,

according to your promises declared to humankind

in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And grant, O most merciful Father, for His sake,

that we may live a disciplined, righteous and godly life,

to the glory of your holy name. Amen..

8

Celebrant: God abides in us! God is breathing, living, forgiving, restoring us in this very moment, and in the

days to come. This is the good news for us! As God is in you, so we can live, work, care for

others, so that love, hope and joy might touch all people. Thanks be to God, for we are forgiven.

Amen.

*THE PEACE:

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

EUCHARIST PRAYER B

SURSUM CORDA –

9

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds:

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator

of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in

our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven,

who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus – Celebrant and People:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Then the Celebrant continues:

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the

calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made

flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior

and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you.

In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he

broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for

the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this,

all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of

sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People:

We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection,

We await his coming in glory;

The Celebrant continues:

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your

creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the

Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice that we may be

acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection

under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the

everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the

head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father,

now and forever.

10

AMEN – WLP (Wonder, Love, and Praise) – pg. 863

Celebrant: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to sing,

11

A period of silence is kept.

The Breaking of the Bread

Celebrant: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.

People: Therefore let us keep the feast.

Fraction Anthem – Hymnal pg. WLP (Wonder, Love, and Praise) – pg. 873

The Priest invites the people to Communion:

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in

your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All are welcome to receive Communion here. When taking Communion, if you prefer, you may partake of only

the Bread. After receiving it, you may cross your arms across your chest to signal to the chalice bearer that you

do not wish to receive the wine. (The Chalice Bearer will pause with the cup and say the words.) If you want to

receive the Cup by intinction (dipping), please allow the chalice bearer to intinct the bread for you. If you do

not wish to receive Communion you may come forward and stand or kneel at the rail, cross your arms over

your chest and receive a blessing from the priest. Those wishing to be anointed please indicate to Father Dave

by touching your forehead when he administers communion to you.

Communion Anthem - “The Reason Why I Sing”

If there are shut-ins who will be receiving Communion from one of our Lay Eucharistic Visitors, the following

prayer is offered following Communion:

12

Celebrant: We send you out to bring the Eucharist today to (name) and our prayers and thoughts go with

you.

People: May you carry the prayers of us all as you take this sacrament of Christ’s presence.

Celebrant: May those who receive the body and blood of our Lord be strengthened and encouraged, and

truly be a part of the community which we share together in our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Please stand as you are able.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER –

Celebrant: Let us pray

Celebrant and people together:

God of grace and truth, your word brings light to birth in the heart of a darkening world which

fears a love it cannot name. We thank you that flesh is blessed and born anew by a truth which

leaves the heavens and walks the waiting earth: Jesus our brother, the Word incarnate. Amen.

THE BLESSING - May our life-giving God, whose wisdom speaks to us in light and breath, in word and

sacrament, in earth and flesh, illumine us with the Light of the World and the radiance of the Spirit. And the

blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.

RECESSIONAL HYMN – Hymnal pg. 411, “O Bless the Lord, my soul”
