LETTERS FROM A PASTOR TO HIS PEOPLE Dear Parishioners, I'm sure there are many who need to hear the opening lines from Isaiah in our first reading: "Thus says the LORD: Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindica on; with divine recompense he comes to save you" (Isaiah 35:4).

Fear is something that never goes away, regardless of our age. I remember being afraid as a child when I would walk upstairs from our basement having been the last one down there. As soon as I would turn off the lights I would sprint up the stairs. I had this fear there was someone/thing that would grab me and pull me down to the darkness. I s ll find myself running up to my room when I come back to the dark rectory at night. We are afraid of being alone and rejected. We are afraid for our children's salva on. We are afraid for our na on and for our church. We are afraid of falling ill and losing our health. We are afraid of losing our jobs. Fear, fear, fear. Whenever I am feeling agitated or restless in my quiet prayer, I can usually trace it back to some fear. Fear is never from God. He doesn't want us to be afraid. There is a reason Jesus says so o en throughout the Gospels, "Do not be afraid." Again, look at the first reading. What is it you are afraid of these days? Don't be afraid to acknowledge it. There is no weakness or shame in being afraid. But, please, pray that fear. That is, bring your fear to the Lord and let him speak the truth to you. He will probably show you how that fear is irra onal and unfounded (like my basement fear) and that he will take care of you and your loved ones.

I had the privilege last week to visit with Deacon Al Memmel in his home (see picture above). Deacon Al has been a permanent deacon here at St. Paul since 1977. He was the fi h class of men ordained to the permanent diaconate for the Archdiocese of Chicago, a er it was

reinstated following the Second Va can Council. Deacon Al, aged 92, is re red now, and he and his wife Be e have three children and six grandchildren. It was great to hear Deacon Al's story and learn too about the history of the parish. I was quite impressed to discover he was a veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict (and Be e served as a nurse in WWII!). And we share a common interest in both being avid readers of history, par cularly the American Civil War (Deacon Al's grandfather served in the Union Army). But even more impressive was Deacon Al's faith. Though he is homebound with his wife, that doesn't prevent him from staying close to the Lord. He prays the Liturgy of the Hours and watches Mass every day. He keeps up with his theological reading and follows the Mass readings in a publica on he receives. And he s ll very much cares about Saint Paul of the Cross. I'm grateful for being able to pray with Deacon Al and give him communion. He is a good man who loves God and s ll desires to serve him. Thank you, Deacon Al, for your years of service to our fine parish and for your witness. God bless you and Be e! Ad multos annos! Next Monday, September 13th, we begin the Monday Evening of Prayer. We will expose the Blessed Sacrament in the church at 5:30pm and proceed to praying Evening Prayer. We will have sheets of Evening Prayer printed out, but I encourage you to download the iBreviary app, which is free and has all the Liturgy of the Hours on it, along with the Mass readings and prayers. The church will be open for silent prayer un l 7:30pm. Confessions will be heard from 6:30-7pm, and I will give a talk on prayer and the spiritual life at 7:15pm. Feel free to stay for all or part of the evening of prayer. It will be good to pray together as a community before our Lord's presence. This Monday, Labor Day, we will have just one Mass in church at 8:30am. Wednesday evening is Back-to-School Night for SPC School and Friday evening there will be a "Welcome Back Parent Social" for the school. Enjoy your long weekend! Yours in Christ,

THE GRIEFSHARE PROGRAM RETURNS TO SPC This program features biblical, Christ-centered teaching that focuses on grief topics associated with the death of a loved one. The DVD seminar features na onally respected grief experts and real-life stories of people, followed by a small group discussion about what was viewed. Past par cipants have said how helpful the informa on and follow-up discussions were to them.

Many grieving people find they are only beginning the work of healing when friends or families have returned to their daily life rou nes. Too o en people, including Chris ans, tend to stuff their grief instead of allowing it to do the God-given work for which it is intended. Confiden ality is a big part of this program.

Your bereavement experience may be recent or not so recent. You will find encouragement, comfort, and help in grieving the death of a spouse, child, parent, sibling, other family member, or friend. This is an opportunity to be around people who understand what you are feeling and going through. You will learn how to recognize the symptoms of being stuck in grief and how to move through the process. You will learn valuable informa on about facing your new normal in life and renewing your hope for the future.

TREASURES IN HEAVEN

The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. - Ma hew 13:44-46

What have I done to secure my treasure in heaven?

SEPTEMBER 6th CHURCH DEDICATION September 6, 1953 marks the anniversary of the dedica on of our current church. It is hard to imagine how many weddings, bap sms, funerals, and Masses have taken place at St. Paul as well as the mul tude of children who have received the sacraments of First Communion and Confirma on. Many visitors have o en told me what a beau ful church it is. I proudly agree. The building took a li le over two years to complete. Here are pictures taken within that period of me.

KIDS CORNER

In the United States, the first Monday in September is celebrated as Labor Day. In the 1800s, laborers banded together to demand just and safe working condi ons for adults and an end to child labor in factories. We have been celebra ng this day as a federal holiday since 1894, but individual groups and states celebrated it even earlier The work we do is one way of showing our love for others. Think about teachers. Their love of learning is shared with their students. Imagine a baker who truly loves to create delicious pastries or bake nutri ous bread. The people who buy and taste her work are in for a wonderful treat. Police officers and firefighters show their love by risking their own lives for the people they serve and protect. Ar sts and musicians put their love into the beauty they bring to the world with the work they do. Think about your own work. How does the work you do show your love for others? As a student, studying and learning and being friends with your classmates is some important work that you do. Make a list of the people you know and the work they do. Talk with members of your family to discover how their work shows their love for others. Think about sending them a note or calling them to thank them for what they do. Jesus invites us, "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest" (Ma hew 11:28). Monday is a day of rest for all who labor — even you have no school! Let us pray in thanksgiving for all the workers in the world. Today there are many people who are unable to find work. Be sure to include them in your prayers.

ALL YOU WHO LABOR
