Ground- breaking research

Ranked in the Top 15% of global universities for research citationsTimes Higher Education World University Rankings 2020

Rated Top 50 for Research Power (REF 2014), Northumbria is leading the debate and responding to today’s challenges through ground-breaking research which is brought into the classroom.

Our academics use their research to fight disease, help people live longer and healthier lives and protect the planet.

They ask how we can shape the world we live in by reflecting on the past, understanding the present and planning for the future.

They ask the questions that mean we can tackle tomorrow’s challenges. Questions like; How would we survive in a world without ice? What technology will be heating our homes and driving our cars?

How do we fight disease in a world where bacteria resists antibiotics? What comes first, people or planet?

Their expertise, and collaborations with industry-leading research partners like Unilever, GlaxoSmithKline, Nissan, Kellogg’s and the NHS, together with our impressive track record securing research funding - mean that we can drive the discoveries which will shape our future.

A responsible future for fashion

Making disease a thing of the past Northumbria’s Dr Sterghios Moschos is waging a war against disease pathogens. His breakthrough in rapid, mass screening for Ebola means that patients can be treated much sooner, reducing the severity and spread of the disease.

His current research also includes single-shot treatments that modify the genomes of cells to prevent disease from setting in. A single dose early in life could help prevent people predisposed to certain diseases from ever developing symptoms. The techniques have equal use for genetic diseases as well as infections.

Dr Moschos says his humanitarian research helps people that can’t afford treatment and tests, and could help make NHS visits quicker.

“ It’s crucial that research translates into something that has an effect on society and the economy. From the jungle to the GP’s office we are taking tools out of the lab and into the community, to bring medicine closer to people, faster.”

Dr Sterghios Moschos, Associate Professor Applied Sciences

“ There can be no beauty in fashion products that cause unnecessary negative social and environmental impact. It is our role to change the way that garments are designed, made and consumed for future generations.”

Dr Alana James, Senior Lecturer, Northumbria School of Design

Fashion is the second most polluting industry in the world, second only to the oil industry. However it’s not just pollution that’s the problem, fashion production also uses a large amount of resources. For example, it takes 78,000 litres of water to create just one pair of jeans.

At Northumbria we are hugely passionate about underpinning fashion practice with responsible principles.

Research in the School of Design is exploring sustainability issues facing the fashion industry, from environmental responsibility, to supply chain transparency and accountability.

Empowering at-risk communities Northumbria academics are using innovative participatory methods to work with groups including young refugees in Uganda, older people in the Middle East, and women activists in Latin America, to help develop more inclusive and sustainable global futures.

Demonstrating the University’s growing research strength in both international development and disaster management, academics from Northumbria are involved in two of twelve new Global Research Hubs – the Living Deltas Hub and the Urban Disaster Risk Hub - created to bring together leading academics, government, international agencies, non-governmental organisations and communities in developing countries to meet the world’s biggest challenges.

“Our research is all about manipulating and understanding how liquids interact with solids. This can lead to new methods for liquid manipulation in technologies such as printing, coating and self-cleaning surfaces.”

Prof Glen McHale, Professor of Applied & Materials Physics and Pro Vice-Chancellor (REF)

“ The research that we’re doing is about working with communities, listening to their voices, and making sure that as we face the challenges of global poverty and of the climate emergency, that the responses to those challenges are co-designed with the communities who are experiencing the greatest threats.”

Prof Matt Baillie Smith, Co-Director of Northumbria’s Centre for International Development

Smarter materials Northumbria’s Smart Materials and Surfaces Laboratory is at the forefront of international research into how liquids behave and interact with surfaces.

Professor Glen McHale is a leading researcher in the group which looks at how surfaces with particular properties, or with properties that can be changed by external forces, can shape liquids. The research group also undertakes research into how surfaces can reduce drag and be made either super-repellent or super-slippery.

One of the biggest challenges facing the world today is the ageing population and the associated demand on health services. Currently, 1 in 12 people in the UK are over the age of 75. In 2040 that’s projected to increase to 1 in 7 people.

Northumbria University is helping to address this healthy ageing challenge by conducting a programme of research about yoga for older adults who have long term health conditions.

The researchers are aiming to determine both the clinical and cost effectiveness of a specially-adapted yoga programme for people over 65 who have multiple long-term conditions.

“ Yoga is thought to bring wide-ranging benefits, such as increases in strength, flexibility, balance and quality of life, and reductions in stress, anxiety and depression. If the results of our study are positive, they will provide evidence for healthcare commissioners to fund yoga within the NHS.”

Dr Garry Tew, Associate Professor of Exercise and Health Sciences

“ We’re used to seeing photos and images of children suffering from hunger in developing countries, but our research has shown that hunger is present today in the UK, and led to policy shifts which will help some of our most disadvantaged communities.”

Prof Greta Defeyter, Professor in Developmental Psychology and Director of the Healthy Living Lab

Researchers in the Healthy Living Lab at Northumbria are at the forefront in researching holiday hunger; a phenomenon which affects 3 million UK children who suffer from food insecurity during school holidays. This research has been instrumental in shifting government policy and has resulted in the Department for Education funding holiday provision in England.

Professor Greta Defeyter was awarded a Fellowship of the British Psychological Society for the impact of her work, which is making a real difference to children, families and communities.

Justice for our planetOur Department of Social Sciences is leading the way in Green Criminology, with research into crimes against the environment.

Looking specifically at wildlife trafficking, poaching, and animal abuse, Northumbria researchers are working to tackle environmental degradation and biodiversity loss, caused by human actions.

Traditionally criminology has been very much about human interactions, drug use, violence, or other kinds of assaults, but Northumbria is shining a spotlight on the harm humans are doing to the environment and other species.

“ There’s so much more that humans do that is harmful, that we don’t look at. So I try to inspire students to look at a much bigger aspect of criminology than has traditionally been given to them.”

Prof Tanya Wyatt, Social Sciences

On thin iceAt almost the size of Great Britain, the Thwaites Glacier is a major cause for environmental concern. If it collapses sea levels could rise by up to five metres.

Sea level rises could have a massive impact on communities and infrastructure. Cities including Shanghai, Bangkok and London could end up under water, even if sea levels only rise by 50cm.

Our researchers are trying to reduce the biggest unknown in sea level predictions, which is changes in ice sheets.

Hilmar Gudmundsson, Professor of Glaciology, develops numerical models to predict ice flow and the response of glaciers like Thwaites Glacier to global warming.

“ There is an urgent need to understand how sea levels will rise in the near future to predict the impact it will have on infrastructures and communities. Our specialist ice sheet modelling tool helps us to make these predictions.”

Research shapes our teaching

Everything we teach at Northumbria is informed by our research strengths. We design courses and modules so that our world-leading academics can share their knowledge and experience directly with you. At postgraduate level, you will build on the independence you developed through your undergraduate degree.

As active researchers, our academics explore some of the world’s most urgent and complex problems. While sharing their work through their teaching, they also actively encourage you to develop your own research skills.

You’ll be matched with a final project supervisor who is carrying out research in your area of interest, so that you can enter into a dialogue that is meaningful and beneficial to both of you. By sharing ideas, sources and processes you can co-create a meaningful contribution to the future of your discipline.

You’ll also be encouraged to become part of the academic community, attending speaker events and conferences. This will help you to appreciate the importance of communicating your research effectively, as well as giving you the chance to share your own research and explore potential collaborations.

Be prepared to be constantly challenged to ask the right questions, look at problems in fresh ways, bring together different points of view and justify your conclusions.

Above all, be curious, determined, take risks and get involved.

Question everything, it’s the only way things change.

“ Students are at the heart of what we do. We provide you with the tools to solve real world problems and challenge you to reach your true potential.”

Prof George Marston Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation)

On postgraduate taught courses, you’ll benefit from our research every step of the way. No matter which route you choose, you’ll be working alongside academics who are leaders in their field.

Jackie Harvey and Peter Sproat are among the UK’s leading academic experts on money laundering, and as part of MSc Forensic Accounting have designed a module based on their ongoing research.

‘Financial Crime: Law and Regulation’ constantly evolves as Professor Harvey and Dr Sproat further their research, and engage with practitioners including the Law Commission.

Students approach the module’s subject matter through a critical lens. They learn about the complex web of legislation and regulations surrounding financial crime – as they would at other universities – but they also learn to question its complexity. Is there a better way to prevent financial misconduct on a global scale? As a result of their research-rich learning experience at Northumbria, our graduates may be the ones to develop alternative approaches.

Learning at the cutting edge

“ We want to support our students to push the boundaries and challenge the status quo.”

Prof Jackie Harvey, Professor of Financial Management

Co-creating new knowledge

“ The study of space law is new and emerging. Our research means students get the chance to answer real space law questions and engage with real problems, as well as collaborating with space companies and other researchers to get a real insight into the space law environment.”

Prof Chris Newman, Northumbria Law School

Professor Chris Newman, is part of a consortium led by Northumberland-based space traffic management and surveillance consultancy Northern Space and Security Ltd (NORSS), winning bid with The UK Space Agency to advise on opportunities for orbital space development and develop policy and strategy.

The collaboration with NORSS is an example of how the North East can take a lead in this sector, and of the value of businesses and universities working together.

Space law research at Northumbria is also opening new learning and career opportunities for students, with the introduction of a new teaching module on outer space law.

Professor Katy Shaw leads research into twenty-first century writings at Northumbria University. She explores the power of narrative and storytelling to shape our understanding of the challenges facing the contemporary world.

Using new digital platforms for telling stories, she helps students develop the skills needed to navigate a hyper connected digital society. Her research has been used to inform future decision making and policy and to help promote cultural inclusion and diversity in the UK literary and publishing industries.

The power of storytelling

“ Contemporary literature can teach us a lot about the challenges of today. Students explore 21st century sources and investigate literary representations of contemporary developments like Brexit to examine the role of writing in actively shaping our understanding of twenty-first century society.”

Prof Katy Shaw, Humanities

Pushing the boundaries of practice

“ My research aims to push the boundaries of contemporary theatre practice. It explores and tests potential synergies between theatre and ethnographic and archival study to help eliminate inequality and injustice. All of this is built into the teaching our students benefit from every day.”

The International Year One – Business is a degree preparation programme for international students who want to study on one of the many Northumbria University undergraduate business degrees, but don’t quite have the right entry qualifications to gain direct entry in to year one.

The programme is the equivalent of the first year of these undergraduate degrees and on successful completion of the International Year One, you will join directly into year two of your chosen programme of study. By choosing an International Year One you will still be able to complete your degree in three years.

How will I be taught? We have a deep understanding of how international students learn and we have found that the combination of increased tutor interaction, consistent assessment and academic and English support leads to success. That is why, to support learning and assimilation into university life, the number of lecture and seminar hours are higher than on a standard undergraduate first year.

This increased time in the classroom is to support your learning and the development of skills that most UK students already have. You will study all your modules over three terms – giving you time to gradually build your skills and understanding of key concepts.

For those of you who require additional English language support, you will study a longer programme that includes a term of English preparation. The aim of this term is to improve your English language skills in speaking, reading, writing and listening alongside more academically focused skills such as critical analysis, reference and academic writing.

Further study In order to progress onto your chosen undergraduate degree you must achieve 40% on your programme. Upon successful completion and subject to specific entry requirements, you can go on to join the second year of a range of business undergraduate degrees at Northumbria University:

“ Northumbria was one of the only universities where my course fees and accommodation costs could fit within my £10k postgraduate loan, which was vitally important to me.”

At Northumbria, we’re lucky to be situated in a very student-friendly city, with many retailers and services offering discounts for students. In fact, we’re one of the most cost-effective cities to live in.

In Newcastle, you get more for your money! From clothes to entertainment, the North East is a relatively cheap part of the country; yet you still get the quality and standard of living that you’ve come here to enjoy. It takes time to get to grips with the money side of things though, so do talk to us about anything that’s confusing or worrying.

To help with anticipating your financial outgoings, we’ve compiled a rough guide of costs. This is, of course, a guide only, and will vary from activity to activity, person to person, but should be a good starting point for you.

It’s important to keep in mind that UKVI, at the time of publishing (April 2019), requires you to budget £1,015 a month for living costs outside of London.

Money mattersCost is an important factor for most students and we fully appreciate what a big investment you are making in your future. We also have a number of measures in place to help make your study more affordable.

As an international student you can save money on our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees by paying early. In addition, our undergraduate tuition fees are frozen from your start date, meaning you will know exactly how much your full course will cost with no inflationary increases in subsequent years. If you decide to go on to study at postgraduate-level, either immediately or in the future, you will benefit from our Alumni Discount where we reduce your postgraduate tuition fee by 20%.

Scholarships and discountsThe Northumbria University Bursary and Scholarship packages will provide financial help to a wide range of students, including rewarding high-achieving students and supporting those with an ‘overseas’ fee status. All Scholarships and Bursaries awarded by the University are support that does not need to be paid back.
