FAMILY PERSEPCTIVE Provided by Hope Appeal Funds

Jesus says “Do not be afraid” three time in today’s gospel and reminds us “all concealed secrets will be revealed.”

Do not be afraid to acknowledge problems in your family. If they remain “hidden in darkness” they will “destroy body and soul.” Healing, understanding and hope are

found only “in the light” of openness. “Do not be afraid.”

For the past several Sundays, we have been hearing the Gospel accounts of how Christ called his Apostles. He carefully shared the Father’s message of love and mer-cy with each of them. But at the same time, Jesus acknowledged that they would encoun-ter a world that was hostile to that message. In today’s Gospel, Jesus continues his in-struction to them, cautioning them to “fear no one speak in the light … proclaim on the housetops.” They would be protected by the same Father who cares for sparrows. Most of all, they should never deny Christ before others. Like Jeremiah and the Apostles, Je-sus has called us, too. At our baptism, we became his followers, and through the grace of the sacraments and the support of our Christian community, we have been called to share that same message of mercy, love and salvation through Christ. We, too, face a world that can be hostile to Christianity and is indifferent to its message. So, how are we doing? Have we ever been too silent, too week, too uninformed, too docile? Do we stand up to what the culture is proclaim-ing or do we capitulate to its temptations? Have we ever gone so far as to deny Christ before others? Let us continue to pray that God’s grace will sustain us, and that we will give better witness to the truth of the Gospel and salvation to a world in need of hearing it. Amen! A little smile from one of our parishioners: An Irishman goes into the Confessional after years of being away form the Church. Inside he finds a fully equipped bar, a dazzling ar-ray of fine cigars, and chocolates. The Priest comes in and the Irishman says: “I’ve been away a long time Father, but I must admit the confessional is much more appeal-ing than I recall.” The Priest replies: “Get out, you’re on my side!” Peace & Joy, Fr.H

Dear Padre,

A Note from our Seminarian James Buttner:

Hello! Thank you for your warm welcome to St. Peter’s

here in Rome, NY. This is my first summer assignment and I’m excited to be here for June

and July and be involved in the parish. I’m originally from the west side of Syracuse and grew up in Camillus, where my family currently lives.

I recently finished my first year of seminary studies in preparation for the priesthood at Theological

College, part of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Prior to this year I had worked for a year in electrical engineering in North Syracuse

after receiving a degree in Physics from Colgate University. My first year in seminary was really excellent and I particularly enjoyed the strong

community of other guys who are also discerning a vocation to the priesthood. I strongly recommend that any guys thinking about priesthood try to go visit the seminary and I am happy to share about

my experience with you too! Thank you again to everyone for your warm

welcome and I look forward to meeting many of you in the coming weeks.

What are social or communal sins? Do I need to confess them? To answer this question properly, we must first make a number of distinctions. First, we are social beings. We act not only as individuals but also as groups, and we are capable of sinning each way. Sin is an analogous concept with nuances, depending on context. There are original, personal, and social sins. There are also both mortal and venial sins. When we sin as individuals, we commit a personal sin. When we sin in a group, we commit a social sin. As with personal sin, some social sins are more seri-ous than others. Societies that enshrine laws promoting abortion, eu-thanasia, and in many countries, capital punishment are involved in serious social sins. Our degree of culpability in such sins depends on the level of our participation in the group. The key distinction is whether we are actively (formally) or only accidentally (materially) cooperating in the evil. For example, if you actually voted for a law enshrining one such evil, then you are formally cooperat-ing in the evil. If you voted against it but are paying taxes that fund such practices, then you are only materially co-operating in it. Formal cooperation in a serious offense against God’s will should be confessed. Material cooperation lessens the degree of blame, sometimes to the point of eliminating it. It is important to examine the nature of the social evil, study the teachings of the Church on the is-sue, determine your level of participation, and form your conscience accordingly. Dennis J. Billy, CSsR

ST. PETER’S CHURCH HISTORY

(continued) After the great event in the history of this old Irish parish, Father Murphy turned his atten-tion to enlarging the old cemetery on E. Dominick Street and building a new Rectory on Floyd Ave across from the old church. When the present Rec-tory on E. Liberty was built in 1914-15, this old building of Father Murphy’s became the convent for the nuns who taught in the parish school. (This is not fact but hear say...The Rectory wasn’t big enough for the priest but 20 or so Sisters moved in.) It became evident in the 1890’s that the enlarged church would not fill the needs of this expanding parish. No time was lost in purchasing the neces-sary properties on James and Park Streets, and in 1894 the foundation was laid by WJ Crammond for the new and present church. In May 1895 the cor-nerstone was laid (one year after that of the old City Hall across the street), and on October 24, 1897 this Victorian Gothic monument for its Pastor and the people of St. Peter’s it was opened and consecrated on the very day it was completed. No mortgage! (to be continued)

Pope Francis Speaks to our hearts!!

We are not part-time Christians

Let us ask ourselves...what steps we are taking to en-sure that faith governs the whole of our existence. We are Christian “part-time,” only at certain moments, in certain circumstances, in certain decisions; no one can be Christian in this way. We are Christian all the time! Totally! May Christ’s truth, which the Holy Spirit teaches us and gives to us, always and totally affect our daily life. Let us call on Him more often so that He may guide us on the path of disciples of Christ. Let us call on Him every day.
