On the contrary. The warm temperatures are to be expected for spring, especially for our current outdoor activities, which are so enjoyable! And to further boost our enthusiasm, why don’t we try Wixxing together? I know most of us aren’t allowed to Wixx, unless we’re among the lucky ones who organize and animate activities. But that doesn’t matter. As long as the youngsters get moving. Besides, there are other challenges in which we can all take part, such as the Défi Moi J’Croque, in which the goal is to eat 5 portions of fruits and vegetables a day. How about you? Will you be eating fruits and vegetables and competing with the other schools? Will you be this year’s winner? The sugar season is fast approaching; let’s take the time to enjoy the moment and the activities that are available to us during this period. Summer is right around the corner and fall not far behind. So, let’s not wish for this season to end... Let’s enjoy it to the full!!! Denis Delbois Issue n°13- march 2013 DID YOU KNOW THAT...? In each issue of our bulle0n, we’re going to present a capsule en0tled «Did you know that...?». These capsules will help you influence decision makers when you meet with your Execu0ve Board, Administra0ve Council or Municipal Council. The purpose of these brief capsules is to provide you with informa0on and «0ps and tricks» that relate to healthy lifestyle habits. The capsules will deal with physically ac0ve lifestyles and ea0ng habits as well as the type of environment that promotes these. The capsules are mostly produced by Québec en Forme, but they could also come from other organiza0ons, such as KinoQuébec, Health Canada, etc... I hope you’ll find them interes0ng! Did you know that...? «There’s a convenience store near (15 minutes of walking distance) almost two thirds of schools and a fastfood restaurant near one third of schools (Robitaille et coll. 2009). In urban areas, the probability of finding a fastfood restaurant near secondary schools is 30 Mmes greater in disadvantaged areas (Kestens et Daniel, 2010).» Partners Newsletter

DEUX-‐SOLEILS  IN  A  FRENZY            Last  December  14th,  the  young  leaders  and  the  referees  of  l’École  des  Deux-‐Soleils  in  Omerville  took  part  in  an  ac0vity  that  was  definitely  WIXX.    Everything  was  set  up  to  allow  the  4th-‐,  5th-‐,  and  6th-‐grade  students  to  move,  and  to  have  plenty  of  fun  doing  it.    The  gymnasium  offered  a  large  number  of  ac0vi0es  that  were  accessible,  appreciated,  appealing  and  adapted  to  preteens  (to  check  out

WIXX’s  4  «A’s»,  go  to  www.opera0onwixx.ca):    skateboarding,  ball-‐hockey,  and  the  original  Panda  course.    This  is  a  ver0cal  course  ending  with  a  jump  onto  a  big  ma^ress!    Each  youngster  was  free  to  take  part  in  one  or  more  ac0vi0es  of  his  or  her  choice,  and  the  more  compe00ve  among  them  could  0me  their  performance  for  the  fun  of  it.    Good  music,  smiles  and    laughter  set  the  tone  for  this  lunch  hour  treat

that  ended  with  everyone  si`ng  down  at  the  table  to  enjoy  lunch  together...  For  the  occasion,  the  dessert  was  generously  prepared  by  the  team  on  guard  duty.    All  this  made  for  a  successful  WIXX  ac0vity,  with  pictures  to  prove  it!

WIXXING  IT  UPBy  telephoneMeM:    Hello  Isabelle.    Recently,  the  municipality  of  Eastman  hosted  a  WIXX  Zone.    Could  you  tell  us  about  it?Isabelle  Mercieca:    Certainly.  Here’s  some  news  about  our  WIXXED  «Winter  pleasures»  event,  held  last  Saturday  in  Eastman. There  were  some  40  youngsters  between  the  ages  of  9  and  13  who  par0cipated  in  the  WIXX  ac0vi0es  throughout  the  day,  with

around  20  of  them  staying  for  the  en0re  ahernoon!!!MeM:    In  your  opinion,  were  some  of  them  already  familiar  with  WIXX?IM:    Yes.    Five  kids  were  already  familiar  with  WIXX  (through  television  ads),  and  two  others  had  already  signed  up  on  wixx.ca.MeM:    Did  that  spark  an  interest?IM:    Yes!    The  other  kids  were  very  eager  to  sign  up,  especially  for  the  contests  (laughter)!  MeM:    Did  the  promo0onal  items  s0r  up  any  interest?

IM:    The  WIXX  glasses  were  very  popular!!!    The  kids  thought  the  idea  was  COOL!MeM:    Did  the  ac0vi0es  you  offered  live  up  to  their  expecta0ons?IM:    They  were  really  crazy  about  the  ac0vi0es,  especially  broomball  (a  hit  with  a  bunch  of  girls!)  and  the  inflatable  mecanical  snowboard!    The  mood  was  great,  and  the  kids  were  really  mo0vated  by  the  crazy  challenges!

It’s happening right here!Everything is fine in a perfect world, the sun is shining and the birds chirping....

MeM:    We’ve  talked  about  the  kids  who  par0cipated,  but  what  about  the  parents  who  accompanied  them?IM:    The  parents  wanted  to  be  sure  to  get  their  WMAG.ca  rack  card;  they  were  very  interested  and  said  they  were  going  to  check  it  out! The  red  rack  card  is  a  winner  -‐  everyone  is  intrigued  by  it  and  wants  one!!!

MeM:    Could  you  send  us  something  to  support  your  statement?IM:    I’ll  send  you  the  pictures  as  soon  as  I  get  them!  (laughter)MeM:    Is  there  anything  you’d  like  to  add?IM:    Yes.    I’d  like  to  once  again  thank  the  WIXX  team  from  Québec  en  Forme  for  its  collaboa0on  and  its  great  ability  to  react!  Our  event  was  a  great  success!!

MeM:    Thank  you  for  this  account,  Isabelle.    Well,  there  you  have  it!    Who  will  be  the  next  to  host  a  WIXX  Zone?

WORKING  TOWARDS  A  BETTER  MATCH!!!                                                                                                                                                                                        You  might  have  no0ced  over  the  last  few  weeks  that  we’ve  undertaken  steps  to  ensure  a  be^er  match  between  the  Partenaires  Pour  la  PeMte  Enfance  de  Magog  and  Memphré  en  Mouvement!Following  last  fall’s  consulta0on  with  the  partners,  we  made  a  decision  to  hire  an  outside  consultant  to  assist  us  with  this  ini0a0ve.    Hence,  Mélanie  Lagacé,  with  the  firm  NISKA,  will  be  accompanying  us  over  the  next  few  months,  along  with  her  colleagues. The  goal  of  this  ini0a0ve  is  to  improve  the  governing  of  the  two

groups  of  local  partners  on  our  MRC  territory  in  order  to  be^er  meet  the  needs  of  the  target  popula0on.The  result  should  be:*  Improved  governing  ability;* The  establishment  of  a  dialogue  integrator  model;

* Be^er  integra0on  of  ac0ons;* Simplified  and  improved  group  management.

Mélanie  and  Maïa  Poulin  will  soon  begin  conduc0ng  interviews  with  some  of  the  partners.    Then,  a  big  mee0ng  will  we  held  later  on  May  the  30th  to  allow  us  to  work  together  to  find  OUR  solu0on,  one  that  is  appropriate  for  us.

Finally,  we’ll  look  at  ways  to  make  the  transi0on.

The  success  of  this  ini0a0ve  depends  on  the  par0cipa0on  of  members  from  both  groups  of  local  partners,  because  they’re  the  ones  who’ll  determine  how  they  wish  to  arrange  and  create  partnerships  that  will  serve  the  youth  of  our  Memphremagog  MRC!    Therefore,  they’re  officially  invited  to  get  crea0ve  with  all  the  partners  on  our  territory!!!

HOW  CAN  WE  REACH  OUR  MORE  SEDENTARY  YOUTH?Some  ini0a0ves  have  been  undertaken  on  our  territory  to  improve  the  lifestyle  habits  of  our  teanagers,  especially  the  more  sedentary  ones! One  of  these  is  the  AcMve  Lunch  Hours  at  the  Polyvalente  La  Ruche.  Here’s  some  informa0on  about  this  project.

The  AcMve  Lunch  Hours  are  in  their  first  year  at  La  Ruche.    Because  the  students  from  Le  Transit  moved  to  La  Ruche,  it’s  important  for  the  team  at  La  Ruche  to  make  sure  the  students  are  integrated  into  the  school  and  all  its  ac0vi0es.  Thanks  to  the  support  of  a  resource  person,  a  variety  of  workshops  are  offered  every  lunch  hour,  as  a  way  to  entertain  Cycle  1  students.    These  workshops  are  animated  by  adults  (outside  teachers  or  intervenors)  who,  in  turn,  are

supported  by  young  leaders  in  their  5th  year! That’s  right!    You  see  what  I’m  ge`ng  at!    For  the  past  three  years,  dozens  of  young  leaders  have  been  trained  at  the  following  schools:  St-‐Jean  Bosco,  Ste-‐Marguerite,  Jardin-‐des-‐Fron0ères,  Deux-‐Soleils,  Le  Baluchon,  Val-‐de-‐Grâce,  St-‐Barthélémy,  Ayer’s  Cliff,  Princess  Elizabeth  and  Mansonville!!!    They’ve  been  anima0ng  or  refereeing  games  for  the  younger  ones  on  the  lunch  hour  or  during  recess.

But  they  grew  up  and  went  on  to  secondary  school!    This  year,  we  welcomed  our  second  cohort  of  young  leaders  to  La  Ruche!    What  a  wonderful  opportunity  for  them  to  con0nue  their  involvement!

Here  are  some  numbers  on  the  AcMve  Lunch  Hours  at  La  Ruche  for  the  fall  term:

-‐  125  hours  of  support  work  (prepara0on  and  promo0on,  upstart  and  management,      finaliza0on  and  assessment).-‐  104  youth  from  Cycle  1  who  signed  up  for  workshops,  82  of  whom  took  part  in  ones  promo0ng  healthy  lifestyle  habits-‐  8  different  workshops  promo0ng  healthy  lifestyle  habits  (  5  to  10  sessions  each):  circus,  skateboarding,  cheerleading,  karate,  dance,  ball-‐hockey/soccer,  mul0-‐ac0vity,  and  cooking  workshops  (3  groups!)

-‐  60%  to  85%  commitment  by  youngsters  in  these  workshops!

-‐  Young  leaders  taking  part  in  dance,  cooking,  and  circus  workshops  who  are  commi^ed  to  improving  their  skills!

We’ll  follow  the  results  for  the  winter  term!
