  • As a new service provided by Canpars since summer 2014, the Canpars virtual library, which offers a useful collection of booklets giving information about different aspects of living, studying, and working in Canada, has added a few more booklets, three of which we are going to review here. On average, one booklet is added to this collection each month. Majid Bastami is the senior editor of this collection. Before Flight: What you should know and do before travelling to CanadaFrom the collection The First 100 DaysAuthor: Majid Bastami, along with articles or translations by Ali Mokhtari and Nadia Ghayouri

Many of the problems immigrants encounter in the first few months of their arrival are due to unimportant issues which could have been avoided or simply

solved in Canada if they had been taken care of a few weeks or months before the flight. In this booklet, we provide immigrants with some useful information in order to prepare them before getting on the airplane. Before Flight has been compiled in more than 40 pages, but will probably have more pages in the future. A guide to working as a hairdresser in Canada (with an emphasis on regulations in Ontario)Compiled, translated, and collected by: Saghi Motahhari and Majid BastamiThis 27-page booklet deals with the laws and regulations related to getting a work permit to work as a hairdresser in Canada, especially in the province of Ontario, as well as the employment rate and the average income in this profession. In the first part, you can read detailed articles about the regulated jobs, the requirements for getting a work permit for them, and ways to get information about them. In

particular, Red Seal permits are explained, as are means of receiving them. Immigration Diaries-- The notes taken by a newcomer about her experience of living in MontrealWriter: Nika KiaOne of the best and most useful guides for immigrants is gained by reading about the experiences of other immigrants, especially those who have recently immigrated. The Immigration Diaries familiarizes the audience with some of these experiences. It should be noted that due to the conversational tone of the writer, the writing style used in other articles of the Canpars website is not used in this booklet. This booklet has been published in 27 pages, but more pages will be added to it if someone sends us a new story.

Read the full article in Persian in Page 12.

From Before Flight to Immigration DiariesThe latest booklets added to the Canpars virtual library are full of information and pleasure.

  • I Hate These Borders! An interview conducted by Mitra Roshan with a smuggler of humans, living in CanadaHe is a man who is said to have the Solomons Carpet. Many people turned to him, tried to bargain for a lower price, and begged him to take them and their families to a safe place in exchange for thousands of dollars in cash. People trust human smugglers as simply as that -- a man who has changed the destiny of many families for good, even his own family, who has never liked his job. His family has made him swear to God that he would give up this job, especially now that he does not need the money. He doesnt look like a criminal. He is an elegant, polite, middle-aged man, educated, one who can speak two or three languages fluently and is familiar with a few more. Moreover, he is interested in poetry, literature, and music. Although he is not involved in human smuggling any longer, we conducted this interview with him because he did the job for many years. Most people who immigrate illegally would be admitted if they applied legally. They would do better to get a tourist visa and visit the country which they sacrifice everything for to live in. Besides, even if they decide to live in that country, they would do better investing their money instead of spending it on an illegal journey. Dont you think that this is a better idea? This may be so, but the problem is that on one hand, people do not know these things, and on the other hand, even tourist visas are not issued easily, let alone visas for legal immigration, for which applicants have to wait for many years, visas they are not even sure they will be able to receive. I assure you that many people would return to their home country the first year instead of destroying everything behind them, wasting their money, having to place their expenses on the Canadian government if given temporary visas. The government does not issue visas easily, so people think that they should sacrifice everything to immigrate to Canada, because they think that a lot of good things await them in the new country.

study, or even learn the new language. In Austria, we were forced to live in a refugee camp named Traiskirchen. I met an Iranian female journalist there; the two of us found out that it was the same place where Jews were held during Hitler era. I suppose that its basement was the gas chamber, as it was partitioned and closed! Our food ration was the same as that given to prisoners of war. The underlying budget was said to be given by the UN. I made friends with an African refugee who had a bachelors degree in political science. He said that he had been there about eight years trying to get his asylum. He worked for the lowest wage in a kitchen yet believed that he was lucky to have found this job, as it was really hard or even impossible to get a work permit. Once, I asked him: What is your biggest wish? He answered: I wish I had a little free time to study some books in my field of study! I havent had the chance to read a book and learn new stuff since I left my country.

The symbolic picture of refugees and their threats to the western world in some recent sci-fi Hollywood moviesRefugees and asylum-seekers make up one of the oldest subjects used to make movies in the worlds cinema, and especially in the Hollywood story-teller cinema. However, depending on the methods used by the cast and crew, the era and the production style in Hollywood, the politico-cultural stands dominating American society, as well as other factors, the picture depicted of them becomes quite different. They have been shown sometimes as dangerous and trouble-making intruders, and sometimes as suppressed people who should be supported and given a helping hand. It has been mainly the dominant ideology in studios which determines friends versus foes. Due to the changes in the production system of studios in recent years, directors enjoy more freedom of speech and independence in expressing their viewpoints. Therefore, we witness an increase in the critical approach towards the way the western world encounters its surrounding world in Hollywoods cinema and in its production, and see that this cinema has gradually enhanced its warning and criticizing aspects, and given up its conservative nature, which used to defend only the traditions and values of American society, and which created a phenomenon known as The American dream in the last decades. We gradually see that in the movies produced in this cinema, our not paying attention to warnings about the gap between the rich and the poor has led to disaster, and that in the mainly apocalyptic worlds and after the Final Disaster, the refugees and asylum-seekers, who are actually a reflection of the current situation, become heroes, even though some of them have had a role in the creation of the disaster. Amongst many movies which have directly or indirectly covered these subjects, we focus on three most recent movies. It should be mentioned that some of these introductions have already been made in the 24th issue of our cinema magazine. ElysiumSnowpiercerThe Planet of the Apes series

My names Saeed and this is my story Saeed left Iran as an illegal refugee eight years ago, hoping to achieve his ambitions. However, he has been deported from Canada recently. He talks about his difficult and costly experience of living as a refugee. He also tells us about which countries in Asia, Europe, and Canada treat the refugees better. In the refugee camps and immigrants prisons, we were under the same roof with the people of other nationalities. Sometimes there were eighteen or twenty people in the same room, which was somehow good, because I had the chance to meet people from other countries. In Europe, the refugees are mostly Asian and African, and in Canada, you can meet many Latinos from South America; the ones the French call Saint Papier! We were illegal immigrants who did not even have our identification papers. We were and still are the most unprotected people, as we do not have permission to work, live,

  • The tenth biennial conference on Iranian Studies was held in Montreal, on August 6-9, 2014, in the Hilton Hotel with 100 meetings on different subjects and some 400 speeches, along with a few more ceremonies. This conference, a very important gathering of professors and researchers of Iranian Studies, is held by the International Society for Iranian Studies. As Hooshang Shahabi (Chehabi), a professor of International Relations and History in Boston University and one of the most active members of the society says, the society was established in the mid 1960s by a group of American University students, including Hormoz Hekmat and Ali Banooazizi, who ran the Maktab Journal in the United States in order to publish articles about Iran in Farsi. Earlier called the Iranian Society for Social and Cultural Studies, it has now been renamed as the Society for Iranian Studies. The society, established as the result of the gatherings of the researchers of Iranian Studies gatherings which were considered marginal studies, even in Middle-Eastern departments in

American universities -- has now become a worldwide association, with members from all over the world, and holds a conference every two years in cities with centers for Iranian Studies. This year, however, the conference was held in Montreal, Canada, because there are two centers in Montreal related to Iranian studies -- Concordia University which offers a Masters degree in Iranian Studies, and McGill University, which thanks to its Islamic Studies Institute and its relationship with the University of Tehran, has an Iranian Studies section. On the sidelines of this conference, some commemoration and award ceremonies were held, including the Lifetime Achievement Award given to both Simin Behbahani (who, sadly, died shortly after the conference) and to Shaul Shaked, the Ehsan Yarshater Book Award to Ali Moosavi for Persepolis: Discovery and Resurrection of a World Empire, and the Latifeh Yarshater Award to Shahrnoosh Parsipour Ghessehnevis, The Rahim M. Alongside this, two meetings with a large audience were dedicated to studying and critiquing the works of two Iranian scholars: Ervand Abrahimian, who is known as the most significant historian of contemporary Iranian political parties, and Hossein Bashirieh, whose role in our general enlightenment is believed to be one of the most influential factors of reformism after the 1978 Revolution. *- Little by little, the group of the love drunk arriveLittle by little, the worshipers of wine arrive Poem by Rumi.

  • Emigrating from one country to another is not easy. To be successful in a new land, you need to be informed and determined. You must know exactly where you are going and must have a specific plan for your future, which is not possible unless you have enough information. That is what

I call Smart Immigration. I have encountered some immigration applicants who see everything in black and white, and assume that immigration is a transition from darkness to light, so all they need to do is to immigrate and then everything will be OK. Some of them even seek illegal ways of immigration and take this perilous path, hoping to reach the light. But, when they achieve their goal (if ever that happens), they find out that they were wrong. Perhaps they had many problems in their home country, and will have other kinds of problems in the new country. They will have more difficulties because they do not know the minimum requirements for success. This type of immigrant is not really welcome here in Canada.

I deeply admire those who are trying to come to Canada legally and vigilantly by preparing themselves and acquiring the necessary information -- those who spend all their energy and time on preparation before their departure and are ready to face all the challenges they will encounter. All efforts made by Parnian and Canpars have been always focused on this issue and we believe that giving information to immigrants, before and after immigration, is a great service we can offer to our countrymen. Moreover, we have held a few seminars under the title of Working and living in the new land in Tehran which have covered essential issues for those who intend to immigrate and those who have recently entered the new country. This year, after successfully running our first seminar in February, the second seminar is scheduled for October 1-3. We suggest you recommend these seminars to any friends of yours who intend to immigrate. You can find more information about how to enroll in them on the Canpars website at www.canpars.ca.
