Peter realized that God would accept any person who acted uprightly, regardless of his or her heritage. A WORD FROM OUR PARISH NURSES MINISTRY...

Donating Blood: A Special Gift According to the American Red

Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. People who need blood include accident victims, cancer patients, premature

newborn infants, people with sickle cell disease and many others.

Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. In the past there were a greater number of reasons people were disqualified from giving blood. Today, in most cases, medications will not disqualify you as a blood donor. Your eligibility will be based on the reason that the medication was prescribed. If the condition is under control and you are healthy, blood donation is usually permitted. Young people can give blood beginning at age 16 (with a parent’s consent), and there is no upper age limit if the donor is in good health. When you go to donate blood at a blood drive or donation center, you will be asked questions about your health, medications and travel. The staff member follows guidelines to determine if you are able to donate blood. The procedure itself is brief pinching sensation as a needle is inserted in a vein in the arm. Giving blood can offer an opportunity to take a break during a busy day. You can pray or daydream allowing your brain to take a pause from the hustle bustle of daily life. You’ll know you’re giving service to others that no one else can give. On April 23, twenty-two St. John parishioners donated blood at the church sponsored blood drive. The parish nurses hope to make this blood drive an annual event.

Congratulations to those who received their First Communion:

A Request from Mary’s Shelter Baby Bottle Campaign Mother’s Day - Father’s Day

Beginning Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13, we ask you to take home a baby bottle from one of the baskets found at the three church entrances and fill it with your loose change. The campaign will end on Father’s Day, June 17 when we ask that you return all bottles to the same baskets.

Mary’s Shelter (615 Kenhorst Blvd) sits within the boundaries of our parish. This shelter provides residential and non-residential services for pregnant women and women with newborns who are in need of a supportive environment because of a lack of suitable housing or favorable family relationships. While caring for women in need, Mary’s Shelter prepares mothers with newborns for independent living and a vision of hope for the future. In an effort to support this mission, Justice in Action Ministry recently paved the way for Saint John’s Family of Faith to adopt and decorate a room at Mary’s Shelter and to donate diapers, blankets and other various baby items. JAM now is sponsoring this Baby Bottle Campaign. The proceeds will help provide: Prenatal Vitamins, Formula, Diapers, Infant Medicine, Wipes and Baby Food. The women and babies at Mary’s Shelter will greatly benefit from your generosity!

Working for the Gospel of Life

On Mother’s Day (May 13) we celebrate the gift of life that we each received from our mothers and the life we give to our children. Catholic Social Teaching calls us to uphold the principle of the Dignity of the Human Person: “that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person in the foundation of a moral vision for society.” (USCCB). As Catholics we are called to extend our respect for life by ministering in a particular and local way to those unwed women who are choosing life for their children yet to be born.

Did you know? According to 2016 statistics unwed mothers account for 39.8% of births in the United States, 40.7 % of births in Pennsylvania, and 41% of births in Berks County. 85% of mothers of unwed births range from 20 to 34 years of age and 33% are high school graduates; 30% have some college or have earned an associates degree. Unwed births to mothers, age 15-19 years of age, is 10%. 45% of unwed births are below the poverty level. (Source: Center for Disease Control and Prevention) What Can You Do? Reflect on this: “We must not forget that we celebrate the Eucharist in order to become Eucharistic men and women. What does this mean? It means allowing Christ to act within our deeds: that his thoughts may be our thoughts, his feelings our own, his choices our choices too . . . . Partaking in the Eucharist commits us to others, especially the poor, teaching us to pass from the flesh of Christ to the flesh of our brothers and sisters, in whom he waits to be recognized, served, honored and loved by us (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1397). - Pope Francis, General Audience, Apr. 4, 2018

Pray this: For all parents who struggle alone to raise their children, that God will give them the strength of the children of God and the support of his holy Church; We pray to the Lord.
