From the Pastor’s Pen

This weekend the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday. The 2017 theme is “Living as Missionary Dis-

ciples.” Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists are commissioned for just such a min-

istry. While we take this Catechetical Sunday as a wonderful opportunity to thank our DREs and catechists; it’s

also a time to reflect on the role each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith. We’re all wit-

nesses to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is a moment for everybody in the Church to rededicate themselves

to this mission.

Last week, Jesus taught the disciples how to handle disputes. Today, Peter asks Jesus how many times one ought to forgive. Peter proposes a reasonable number of times, perhaps seven. Jesus extends that number astronomically—how about 70, 7 times (490 times a day?)!!

The parable of the unforgiving servant is Jesus' way of elaborating on his reply to Peter. The parable un-veils the depths of God's mercy.

There is a temptation to quantify forgiveness as Peter tried to do. Jesus shows him that forgiveness is not about any number of times we forgive. The point is, forgiveness is a gift we pay forward. God’s mercy should transform us into people who pass mercy on to others. If it ends in us, it might be the end of us.

To Live as a Missionary Disciples is to live that ‘pay it forward’ mentality that celebrates Mercy by being merciful.

Is there any better way of passing on the richness of our Catholic Faith?

Know anyone who’s thinking about going deeper in their faith life? For those intrigued by the Catholic Faith, or thinking about entering the Catholic Church, or Catholics who want to brush up on appreciating the treasure they’ve re-ceived, we invite you to consider a journey with Fr. Robert Barron.

Catholicism is a groundbreaking Documentary Film Series and multi-media Study Program released in September of 2011. The ten, 60-minute DVD episodes take viewers around the world and deep into the Faith, spanning over 50 locations in 15 countries – stunningly filmed in high-definition.

Catholicism illustrates the truth, goodness, and beauty of the Catholic Faith in an epic media experience. Viewers will witness a vision of the Catholic Faith that has never before been seen. From the lands of the Bible to the great shrines of Europe, from the heartland of America to the mysteries of Asia and the beating heart of Africa, see the pas-sion and glory of the Faith that claims over 1.2 billion of Earth’s people.

Catholicism is created and hosted by Fr. Robert Barron, ordained auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles in 2015. Barron is recognized as “one of the Church’s best mes-sengers.” He is a prominent theologian, author, speaker, and cultural commentator. NBC Today Show correspondent Mike Leonard is the Executive Producer of Catholicism.

If you are interested or know someone who is, please contact the Parish office at 228-3164.

Hurricane Help. Anoth-er way we put God’s love into action is helping at the national level. This week-end, a one-time special collection is being taken up to assist in the massive recovery efforts following the tragic storms of the past few weeks.

Funds collected this weekend will be used to sup-port the efforts of Catholic Charities USA, the official do-mestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church, as they respond to immediate emergency needs for necessities such as water, food, shelter, and medical care as well as to the long term needs to rebuild and recover after the widespread destruction we’ve seen in the last few wks.

As with all special collections, parishioners should make checks payable to the parish. The parish deposits the checks and include the donation in individual giving rec-ords. The parishes then send a check to Diocese of Far-go, and the Diocese remits a check to the national office. This stream-lined process allows funds to get to the vic-tims as soon as possible.

Catholic Charities Sunday is the day set aside each year for all parishes of North Dakota, both Far-go & Bismarck Dioceses. We’re asked to come to-gether to celebrate and support the “Social Arm of the Church.” This year Catholic Charities North Da-kota Sunday is set for next weekend, Sept 23-24.

The past 2 years have gratefully seen increas-es in demand for and use of their services. As more people become aware of their programs, it’s important to continue raising awareness. Reaching out to the suf-fering in our State is yet

another way we share the treasures of our Catholic Faith.

ND Catholic Charities is mercy in action. Families have decided to adopt a child after seeing their past videos. Others found courage to seek the counseling they desperately needed. The needs are many and your generosity is deeply appreciated.
