THE NATIONAL NIGHT OF PRAYER FOR LIFE This pro-life prayer service, consisting of exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, 20 decades of the Rosary, prayer to St. Michael, meditation and hymns, takes place each year beginning on December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and rolls into December 9, the Feast of St. Juan Diego. It was on this feast that Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas and the unborn, first appeared to St. Juan Diego in Mexico. The National Night of Prayer for Life bridges these two feasts to honor Mary and to pray for the sanctity of all human life. Please take some time to spend with Our Lord and his Mother as Advent begins and we give thanks for His most precious gift of Life. ANGEL TREE The time is coming once again to help children of Roanoke County Jail inmates. Your generosity in the past has brightened Christmas for children who are separated from a parent and often face poverty, stigma and fear as well. Please take an angel, buy an age-appropriate gift (no toy weapons or violent action figures, etc.) and put it, along with the angel, under the tree by December 14. Children will pick up their gift at the jail and take it home to put under their tree. Please bring your gift in a gift bag or leave it unwrapped. Most importantly, keep these inmates, their children and all innocent victims of crime in your prayers this advent season. Any questions—call Theresa Lewis at 389-2084.

SOUP, REFLECTION, PRAYER Come refresh yourself in the midst of the hectic holiday season with an evening of reflection and prayer and a delicious meal with delightful fellowship. We will begin with a simple soup supper followed by reflections on Advent by Deacon Eric, concluding with prayer. See posters in the commons for details and sign-up by the water fountain. Mark your calendar for Monday, December 15 at 6:15 pm in the social hall and sign-up today!

OUTSIDE THE PARISH

PRESERVATION OF OUR CATHEDRAL After 100 years of service to the diocese and Virginia, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is undergoing critical and prudent preservation projects to fortify it for a second century of ministry. The goal is $6 million. Bishop DiLorenzo has awarded a $500,000 Challenge Gift to invite all to consider a gift, pledge or tax-wise planned gift. More to follow in The Catholic Virginian or you can contact Kim Kremer at [email protected] or 804-359-5651. REFUGEE AND IMMIGRATION SERVICES RIS continues to resettle refugees in record numbers in the Diocese of Richmond. With the recent change in the weather, the refugees have a great need for gently used warm clothes and coats. Donations can be brought to Refugee and Immigration Services, 1106 9th Street SE, Roanoke. FURNITURE NEEDED Interfaith Hospitality Network will have two guest families moving out soon and furniture supplies are low. If you or your friends and neighbors have furniture you plan to get rid of, please let them know. Leslie Giorno will be happy to come pick it up and pass it along to these families. IHN welcomes any furniture and household items you offer, but do know that these families specifically need dressers, full-size beds, sofas, a sofa bed, kitchen table & chairs, lamps, bedside/end tables, curtains and a vacuum cleaner. Please call Leslie at 389-4068 if you have something you would like to donate. Thank you! MARK YOUR CALENDARS OLN is pleased to present former Hollywood actor, Frank Runyeon, for two special events. This Monday, November 24 at 7:00 pm, Frank will present “Afraid! The Gospel of Mark” and on Tuesday, November 25, also at 7:00 pm, he will speak on the struggle to live as a Christian in the age of modern media values in his presentation “Hollywood vs. Faith”. Frank is probably best known from his many years on TV, opposite Meg Ryan on As the World Turns, as well as on Santa Barbara, General Hospital, Falcon Crest, Melrose Place and LA Law. He received his B.A. in Religion from Princeton University and studied at Yale Divinity School before receiving his Masters, with honors, from General Theological Seminary in New York. In recent years, he has gained national acclaim as a translator and performer of Biblical texts. Please plan on joining him for these two very special evenings at Our Lady of Nazareth.
