Mission Statement St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, Anderson SC was founded in 1943 by the Franciscans of the Holy Name Province, New York. The intention then and today, was and is to, in the spirit of Jesus Christ and St. Francis, minister in and with the African

American Catholic community and to reach out to the African Americans of Anderson County. Furthermore, all who come to St. Mary’s from whatever background and ethnicity with a desire for Christian family will be regarded as brothers and sisters to

us. We also see ourselves as called to live in Gospel relationship to the alienated and the poor of this community.

Meetings are the first Monday of the following months, Jan, Mar, May, Jun, Sep and Nov, at 6:00 PM. In the Parish Hall.

Parish Council meeting will be open to all parishioners. If a non-member parishioner wishes to address the Council, this must be requested, including the subject, at least one week in advance (so it can be put on the agenda) through the Parish Council President. Presentation must be limited to the subject requested.

RCIA (The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process for adults to enter the Catholic Church. Classes are open to all adults, including unbaptized adults, baptized adults interested in becoming Catholic, Catholics who want to renew or deepen their understanding of the faith, and any adults who are simply curious about the Catholic faith. Classes are each Sunday after the 6:00 p.m. Mass.

RCIA (El Rito de la Iniciación Cristiana de los Adultos) es un proceso para que los adultos ingresen a la Iglesia Católica. What is a Franciscan Friar?

The Franciscans, also called the Order of Friars Minor,

are members of the Catholic religious order founded by

Saint Francis of Assisi over 800 years ago. We seek to

follow the manner of life that Saint Francis led. Our

Order is a mendicant religious order of men who there-

fore depend directly on the charity of the people for

their livelihood.

This new order founded by Saint Francis was prompted

by a need to reinvigorate the life of the Catholic Church.

At the present time the Franciscan Friars number 17,224

worldwide with 586 novices or “Friars in training”.

Often times you will see OFM after a Friar’s name,

wondering what it means. It refers to the Order of

Friars Minor commonly called the Franciscans.

What is a Franciscan Province?

A Franciscan Province is a geographic area of the

country where the Friars of that province live and work.

The Franciscan Order divides countries into provinces.

What is Holy Name Province?

Holy Name Province is the largest of seven provinces

in the United States belonging to the Franciscan Order.

It covers the eastern seaboard with some locations

beyond. The Provincial headquarters are located in

New York City.
