Follow Truth

A friend of mine, who has been working as a nurse in the Middle-East for more than ten years, recently said this to me:

“I have been struggling emotionally being away from my family for too long and, while I’ve been away, there had been a lot of things happening at home! I could attest that I am a faithful Catholic and that I attend Mass every Sunday but why is it that I always have a hard time in life? I feel like I’m losing my faith in God and I’ve been doubting God all this time!”

Then there was silence. I really didn’t know what to say to her! Should I tell her to go to a priest for further counsel or suggest she keep praying and wait for God’s grace to enlighten her. But I wondered whether that would help her.

Then she solemnly said, “But you know, God has always been faithful to me amidst everything else that happened in my life! Struggles are real but so is our God!” Struggles are real, but so is our God!

In the gospel today, Jesus reminds us that He is real and alive. He is risen and fully present among His disciples and followers. Out of fear the disciples were gathered together and hiding after Christ was crucified and buried, fearing that they would be the next ones to be captured and to suffer the same fate as the master.

But Jesus came and greeted them, “Peace be with you!” He cleared away their fears, anxiety and doubts, assuring them that it was indeed He among them, risen from the dead. Such is Thomas, who doubted at first, but was then allowed by Jesus to touch his wounds, and to feel that He was truly risen and come back for them.

Our faith in Christ is always a matter of our personal relationship with Him. In relationships, it is healthy to have doubts, fears and even struggles. God allows room for fears, doubts and struggles in our faith journey to remind us that we are to grow our faith in Christ. These tiny holes of doubts and fears are in fact places where the Holy Spirit can enter and the grace of God poured out and into us, strengthening our faith.

Jesus invites us also to touch our own wounds, imperfections and brokenness. To do so brings us in touch with the reality of our lives, that we are not perfect. But through our wounds, imperfections and brokenness, Christ can become ever more present in our lives. He is bigger than our problems and our struggles. Indeed, our struggles are real, but so is our God! Kenneth Dan Gallamaso CSsR © Redemptorists 2019

Easter Thank YouEaster Thank You I would like to thank everyone involved with making our Easter celebration a joyous and spiritual experience: Acolytes, altar servers, readers, extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, the music ministries, cantors, psalmists, the youth and youth ministry for leading the Stations of the Cross, readers, collectors, greeters, the sacristans, those who contributed to the cost of the flowers and those who prepared the floral arrangements, those who provided the Paschal Candle, and the Easter eggs. Thank you also for bringing your family, neighbours and friends to our celebrations. Many people gave so much of their time and love in making our Easter celebrations so special for all. We had an extraordinary celebration which I hope had touched us all and lifted our faith. May the Easter Message come alive in our daily lives!
