St. Mary Magdalene’s is a Roman Catholic School.

Within our community, we seek to live within the Catholic faith as a family. Each child is a gift valued as a unique individual made in the

image of God the father, Son and Holy Spirit. We seek to share our ethos through

prayer, forgiveness, loving, sharing and caring. In all aspects of life, we follow the teachings of Jesus and, through prayer, we are guided by asking ourselves ‘What Would

Jesus Do?’

We encourage a partnership among the parish, the school/religious education program

and the family that will nourish a strong faith. In school we use a Catholic Primary Religious

Education programme for Foundation and Key Stages 1 and 2.

Come and See is a structured programme following the pattern of Explore, Reveal and

Respond.

The purpose of the 5Ws framework is to reflect the new Section 48 RE Framework from the Diocese of Salford, which focuses on the 5Ws, rooted in the roots of the early church. They are as follows:

Welcome, Word, Witness, Welfare, Worship. In child speak, these translate as come, talk, work, walk, pray. Welcome [come] – come together in welcome.

Word [talk] – talk together as a word of God’s community.

Witness [work] – We look at our School mission statement and work together as a witness community.

Welfare [walk] – Walk together as a welfare community.

Worship [pray] – We pray together as a worship community.

SEEDS AND GARDNERSThe Year 6 undertake the 'Seeds and Gardeners' programme,

where each pupil is paired up with a new child from reception

class. The aim is to give the new children a point of contact

and make them feel safe by seeing a friendly face on the

playground and around school. During the year, Seeds and

Gardeners undertake a variety of activities together and will

be in regular contact throughout the school year.

What is the Early Years Foundation Stage?

The Early Years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S.) is the stage of education for children from

birth to the end of the Reception year.

It is based on the recognition that children learn best through play and active learning.

This is a very important stage as it helps your child get

ready for school as well as preparing them for their future

learning and successes. From when your child is born up

until the age of 5, their early years experience should be

happy, active, exciting, fun and secure; and support their

development, care and learning needs.

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The children will be learning to:

• develop an understanding of maths through stories, songs, games and imaginative play;

• become comfortable with numbers and with ideas such as 'heavier than' or 'bigger’;

• be aware of shapes and space.

Understanding the World

• explore and find out about the world around them, asking questions about it;

• build with different materials, know about everyday technology and learn what it is used for;

• find out about past events in their lives and their families' lives;

• find out about different cultures and beliefs.

It is important that parents and the staff caring for your child work together. We want you to feel comfortable about exchanging information and discussing things that will benefit your child.

How you can find out how your child is getting on?

Uniform• Please ensure that your child’s name is in

all items of clothing, including shoes!

• P.E kit must be kept in school, so that it is available every day. It can be taken home half termly to be washed.

• Coats with a hood – please send it in everyday regardless of weather as we will be using the outdoor areas.

• Your child will be taking part in lots of interesting and sometimes messy experiences, so may come home dirty! It is all part of the fun!

All children in EYFS and Key Stage 1 are entitled to a free school meal.

• Menus are sent home at the beginning of each term.

• The menus work on a 3 week cycle.• Your child will have the chose of a meat option, vegetarian option, sandwich or jacket potato.

• There are also themed lunches put on for special occasions (ie) World Cup, Royal Wedding etc.

Reading Books• Children will start off with a sharing book which will

have no words in. This is an opportunity to talk about the characters and what they think is happening in the story. Once they are able to recognise sounds and blend and segment sounds, they will be given a reading book with words in.

• Please do not put water bottles in with your child’s sharing/reading book.

• You will be given a diary to record comments in, when

you share/read a book with your child.

Home Visits• This year home visits will still take

place but be slightly different due to the current situation.

• We will hopefully be starting door step home visits from next week.

• We believe home visits are a crucial part of building that bond between home and school.
