ADVISE FROM A PARENT COORDINATOR

Summer is a time for some much-needed

relaxation. But it’s also a time to work towards

your goals. These are some tips for summer

activities for high school students.

Participate in pre-college programs. Colleges and other

institutions across the country offer summer programs

to high school students looking for a taste of college life.

In most cases, students live in dorms and take classes,

much like they will when they matriculate as college

freshman in a few years. In some cases, you might be

able to earn college credits that you can apply to your

degree later on.

Study for the SAT or ACT. Now is a good time to

enroll in standardized test or college prep classes,

since you don’t have to study for your high school

tests.

Join a sports team or practice an independent

sport like running.

Find a side job and earn some cash to put aside for

college. Having a job can be an impressive

extracurricular activity!

Ask friends, family, and neighbors if the have any

work for you, such as babysitting or lawn-mowing.

Connect with local organizations, such as an after-

school program, to see if they have any need for

summer volunteers.

Brainstorm your college essays. If you’re an

entering senior, developing essay ideas now will

help you during the busy application season, when

you’ll also need to study for your classes and tests.

By Amanda Morin Grades improved, but less than you expected. You might be tempted to say, “I was expecting to see more improvement than this.” But it’s important to remember that any improvement is progress, and even a little bit can take a lot of effort. Recognizing this provides an opportunity to talk about what’s working well. Instead, try saying, “Well done! What do you think helped you to make those improvements? Would the same strategies be helpful for other subjects,

Grades have improved since the last report card.

When the results are positive, you might be tempted to say, “I knew if you tried harder you could do better!” But “trying harder” isn’t how kids with learning and attention issues do better in school.

Instead, you can say something like, “Awesome! Looks like using new strategies for homework and studying really paid off.” Get more tips on how to give praise.

Grades stayed the same, but attitude and effort improved.

When you’re looking for improvement in grades you may overlook teacher comments about progress in other areas. You might be tempted to say, “Well, your attitude is better. If only your grades were better, too.” But if your child doesn’t enjoy school, greater effort and an improved attitude are progress.

Instead, try saying, “It’s good to hear you’re more comfortable in school, and to see that you’re doing well with your homework. Let’s work on test-taking for the next marking period.”

Some grades improved, and others dropped.

Since some subjects have improved, you might be tempted to say, “What happened with the rest of your classes?” But as your child gets older, the expectations for learning change and may be harder to meet in some subjects.

It’s more productive to say, “Your math and science grades look great! But I’m a little disappointed about the others. What’s different in those classes?” Talk about changes that might help, such as a quieter homework area or working with a tutor. If he’s old enough, you can also suggest that he speak with his teachers about strategies that could help him improve.

Your child is failing most classes despite working hard.

If you’re surprised, you might be tempted to say, “You’re failing everything?! I thought you were working hard!” Your child’s performance may have little to do with effort, though. Does he have the necessary supports? Maybe it’s time to consider an evaluation or revisit his IEP goals.

STAFF INTERVIEW

What is your name?

Yves Rho

What does a typical day looks like for you?

I start my day at 5am. I get ready for work, help get my children ready for school

then commute to FHHS. At work, I meet with other teachers, students, and school

personnel as needed. I teach (of course), grade, complete paper work, plan for upcoming

lessons, and contact parents. I make the two hour commute home, and start all over again

the next day--as long as it's a school day.

What do you like about Forest Hills High School?

I started at Forest Hills in Sept. 2008. In 2012, I moved to New Jersey. I've remained

for three reasons: 1. I LOVE the dedication of my colleagues. There is nothing like

working with people who are dedicated, care about what they do, and want the best for their students. 2. I have a wonderful AP (Ms. Cali) who has supported me in my growth as a teacher. She has allowed me to be creative and try out new ideas. She's strong yet flexible. I respect that. 3. I LOVE how interesting my students are. Each year there is a new crop of personalities who keep me on my toes. Queens is the most diverse county in the entire country, and I get to learn so much from them. My students have made me more patient, more tolerant, and more aware of the world around me.

What do you do when you not working?

I spend time with my family, read, write, and/or work to improve my house. I'm constantly building and painting

something.

How can parents help their children to do better at Forest Hills?

Three things: 1. Communicate with your children. Sometimes they will act as if they are above it all, but keep trying. Eventually you'll break through. Kids are learning who they are at this age, and your voice is necessary. 2. Keep an eye on what your children are doing, and be involved in their lives--academic and social. Even if you believe you can't help them with their school work, making sure that they are doing their work is extremely important. 3. If you are not able to contact teachers by phone during the day, email us. Be sure to include your email address so that we may respond. Also, make sure that the school has your current phone number and home address.

Refugee Youth Summer Academy 2018

Each summer, the International Rescue Committee provides a program for newly arrived refugee, asylee and other immigrant youth ages 5-21 to prepare them to succeed in New York City schools through a supportive and creative learning community. This year, the IRC aims to serve 120 of elementary, middle and high school levels. The students will represent at least 15 nations, and speak 20 languages. Many students will have arrived in the U.S. within the past few months, including children from Afghanistan, Guatemala & Cote d’Ivoire. At RYSA, core academic subject area classes emphasize essential learning skills and English language development. Creative arts, physical education, and life skills classes promote social and emotional well-being, while also infusing opportunities for additional English language learning. Each Friday, students participate in field trips to introduce them to the educational and cultural life of New York. For more information, please see a video about RYSA 2015

Dear parents, guardians, and alums:

Forest Hills High School has an exciting opportunity to teach computer science to our students. Technology is transforming

the world around us and having a computer science education is key to our students being ready for the future job market.

Did you know computer science majors can earn 40% more than the college average? Or that there are currently over

500,000 open computer science positions without qualified talent to fill them? Forest Hills High School is part of the

almost 60% of U.S. high schools who don’t currently offer computer science to most of their students. We’re trying to

change that by partnering with TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools).

Action We’re Taking

TEALS is a program supported by Microsoft Philanthropies that recruits, mentors, and places passionate technology

professionals into high school classrooms as volunteer instructors. These volunteers bring subject matter expertise and

will join Ms. Amanda Lee in a team-teaching model. TEALS provides training for both parties as well as course outlines

based on successful college courses.

Next year we will be offering “Introduction to Computer Science” thru TEALS. The introductory class is based on the award

-winning UC Berkeley CS10 course and is adapted specifically for high schools.

As a TEALS partner school, Forest Hills High School needs to assist with volunteer recruitment from the computer

science and software engineering fields to team-teach these courses with our teachers. Forest Hills High School will hold

the courses first period to permit the volunteers to attend their regular jobs.

Please help --if you or someone you know works in the computer science or software engineering field and would be

interested in making a difference in our students’ future success, please contact me at 718 268-3137 extension 2410 or

email: [email protected].

You can read more about TEALS on their website at http://www.tealsk12.org.

I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to hearing from many of you.

Sincerely,

Roz Fitzgerald

ADVISE FROM A PARENT COORDINATOR

Forest Hills?

Forest Hills?
