Safer Schools

The Safer Schools Partnership would like to make parents and carers aware of a recent spate of bike

thefts local to the King's Lynn area.

Many youngsters may have been bought new bikes for Christmas or may have been given vouchers and

money and have since bought their own.

Please make sure that your child has a decent lock for their bike and uses it at all times, even if they

believe their bike to be in a secure bike shed.

Unfortunately there are people out there who know there will be a number of new expensive bikes out

there and the temptation to steal it will be too great. If you've spent a considerable amount of money on a

new bike then make sure you get a decent lock too. There are number of lock styles and retailers

available and a secure lock that keeps your child's bike safe and left alone isn’t necessarily hugely

expensive to buy. If your child's bike is locked up then hopefully the chances of it being stolen will be

reduced.

Many thanks.

NCS – Year 11

This month your son or daughter will be given the opportunity to sign-up to the NCS programme for

Summer 2017. At NCS we take students aged 16-17 on 2 week long residential trips throughout the

summer. Our main 4 aims for each participant is to enable them to mix with other young people from the

area and make new friends; to increase their confidence through challenging themselves; to gain

something fantastic to put on any CV or personal statement; and ultimately to have a great time in the

summer.

Our trips include 1 week at an outdoor activity centre, 1 week at a university centre and a 30 hour

volunteering project afterwards, dedicated to a cause of the participants choosing. Although the value of

this course is over £1,250 per participant, due to the government subsidizing payments, it is available to

your son or daughter for a maximum of £50. There are also early-bird discounts and free places available

to qualifying students to make the course as accessible as possible.

We will be coming into KES on 26th January to present this opportunity to year 11s, in the meantime

please take a look at the attached NCS newsletter for more details. For any questions feel free to contact

me, Matthew, either via email at [email protected] or phone 01553 815209.

Year 7 – Mrs Stonach Happy new year to you all and welcome back to all students.

Attendance - This week’s form attendance of the week is awarded to 7A with a group attendance of 98.6% which is outstanding – well done to them. As a year group however, year 7 attendance has been falling over the past few weeks, this is due to 2 main reasons; 1. There are many nasty bugs around at the moment and 2. Holidays in school time. Could I please politely ask that where possible pupils are in school? If they have the sniffles or a sore throat, I am more than happy to keep medication in my office for as and when they need it. On the subject of holidays, please keep them in the school holidays. If you wish your child to be considered for Leave of Absence, then please send a letter to the Executive Principal, Craig Morrison, outlining your reasons for the absence to be considered as exceptional.

Mobile phones – There are many pupils in year 7 with mobile phones, I understand that they are a great communication tool when they are travelling to and from school. There have been some incidents this week which have involved pupils being told off for using phones in class when they have received a text or call from home. Could I please insist that any messages are passed through reception or texts are sent at break or lunchtime to avoid this happening again. It does disrupt lessons and interfere with learning.

In our assembly this week we have been looking at the importance of looking smart and first impressions. Year 7 are generally a smart and tidy bunch, if you have any problems regarding your child’s uniform, please send a note in with your child explaining what the problem is and when it will be rectified.

This week the pupils have also been informed about a new rewards system that will be introduced in school, moving away from the vivos. More information will be given to you about this in the coming weeks.

Letters have been sent home with student this week about our Year 8 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 26th January, 4pm – 7pm. Please ensure your child makes appointments for you to meet with their subject teachers. I appreciate It’s not always easy to come into school on a weekday evening, particularly in the winter, but this is an important part of the year 8’s journey as they are fast approaching their Options Evening next month and some very important decisions about their futures. ATTENDANCE Attendance this week sits at 92.2% and we need to work hard to improve this figure. Should your child not be wearing the correct uniform, please send them in with a note explaining this. The note will be signed and validated for 2 days by a member of the Year Team.

Year 10 – Mr Waring

Let me start by wishing all our readers a happy and prosperous 2017 and hope you all had a fantastic and safe Christmas and New Year, though it seems such a long time ago now.

In the last week of last term, our best attending form, once again went to 10W with 96.5% whilst 2nd place went to 10D with 96.1% well done to both form classes. We also gave out this week no fewer than 81 certificates to students who had 100% attendance for the whole of last term - a fantastic achievement by them all.

As for the month of December as a whole, there was a slight improvement over the month of November as we have 54% of students on 96% or above, a drop in the number of amber (95.9 to 90%) students to 28%, though it would have been nice if some of them moved up to green rather than see some drop to red. The number of students in the red zone (below 90%) is 18% which is a small improvement on November, a step in the right direction nonetheless.

Assembly this week was a reminder on behaviour, punctuality and uniform expectations. A short reminder of what was shared with them in September. Uniform should be worn in line with the schools policy and no hoodies are allowed. If you have any questions on our uniform requirements, please contact me on the email below and I will be happy to discuss. Failure to conform can result in parents being asked to come in with uniform or students being sent home. A reminder that the less time a student is in class, the reduced chance of being successful in their GCSE’s was also given.

There have recently been a few incidents whereby parents have text or called students during the school day. May I please request parents DO NOT call students during the school day. Students are not to have phones on during lessons, so if you ring or text and the phone is heard, it is your child who will receive a consequence. If there is an URGENT requirement for you to call your child at any time other than break or lunchtime, you must call the school reception who will contact your child. Your assistance in this matter would be much appreciated.

Please be aware, there have been some changes to the staffing of form classes and year 10. The academy website page has been updated to reflect this along with form tutor email addresses.

Congratulations go to Thea Howlett and Mia King for being nominated languages stars of the week and well done to the both of you.

Advanced notice: The Year 10 parents evening takes place in the main hall on 23rd February. Please do make appointments with staff via the appointment log your child will have. This is your opportunity to discuss the academic progress of your child where their strengths and weaknesses are and how, as a parent you can help them achieve their GCSE goals. I will also be available to discuss your child’s attendance and behaviour and give you the opportunity to share any concerns or issues face to face. The year 10 team are really keen to see as many of you as possible, so please, put the date in your diary now and come and meet the team.

As always, you can contact me at the school on extension 239 or via email on [email protected]

Year 11 – Mrs Wright

As I am sure you are all aware Year 11 students have now had their mock exam results and just recently

their school reports. I hope that your child is pleased with their progress and will strive to continue with

working hard to attain their targets.

Year 11 students should have applied for their choice of further education on the Help you Choose

website. All students have been given passwords for this site and it is imperative that this is done as soon

as possible.

The Year 11 Prom is being organised by Mrs Stonach and Mr Waring. The date for this year’s Prom is

Friday 23rd June. Mrs Stonach and Mr Waring have organised a committee consisting of Year 11 students

who will be fundraising and making decisions regarding the Prom.

Attendance still remains an issue. The government has set a target that students should attend school

95% or above of the academic year. Unfortunately, we are not meeting that target. It has been proven that

the more students are in school the higher grade they achieve. It is very pleasing to note that 154 Year 11

students have 100% attendance this since our return in January.

There is some excellent work being produced by Year 11 and students are working with a continued

positive work ethic.

The Year 11 top 3 students producing good or outstanding work are

Holly Jillings

Agnieszka Maciak

Alex Stevenson

Well Done to them.
