GRATEFUL HEARTS ON THANKSGIVING DAY! I want to extend the gratitude to all our faithful parishioners, expressed by the 33 families who received our help, so that they could enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving Day meal with their families. Yes, because of your on-going support of our pantry and your generosity in our monthly collections to assist in the work of our Parish Outreach Program and St. Vincent De Paul Society, we were able to serve these neighbors and fellow parishioners at Thanksgiving. They wanted to make sure that you know how grateful they are for your assistance. Yes, “I was hungry and you gave me to eat, thirsty and you gave me to drink.”

"The Advent mystery is the beginning of the end of all in us that is not yet Christ." - Thomas Merton The interior life might be the most ignored part of our lives given the obsession we seem to have with the external world and appearances. It is almost a denial of anything deeper than “what the eye can see.” Given the liturgical and spiritual reality of the Advent Season, which calls us to be more mindful of our hunger for God in our lives and yearn for the coming of the Christ, not as the infant born in Bethlehem as on the First Christmas, but his “coming again in glory,” the adult Christ of our faith. What is the proof of this yearning in the human spirit? How is it manifested in your life and mine? The opening prayer of the Mass this weekend clearly expresses, “Grant your faithful, we pray. . .the resolve to run forth to meet Christ with righteous deeds at his coming . . .” Yes, we are called to observe Advent in such a way that we are transformed by it. What are the righteous deed you are performing? Will Jesus see us busy about the work that he has entrusted to you and me to do in his name until he comes again? These actions are an exterior manifestation of an interior disposition of our hearts joined to Christ and his Mission. Ultimately, the universal call to holiness bids us to commit to the insight posted above in the words of Thomas Merton, one of the great spiritual writers of the twentieth century. Yes, “the Advent mystery is the beginning of the end of all in us that is not yet Christ.” What is it specifically in your life and mine, which “. . .is not yet Christ?” Can you name it? Are you willing to let it go for your spiritual growth and the good of others? Meister Eckhardt, a 12

th century mystic, challenged us when he wrote the

following words, “What is the good if Mary gave birth to the Son of God. . ., if I do not give birth to God today? We are all Mothers of God, for God is always needing to be born.” For Christ to be born in you and me is one of the major goals of the spiritual life, flowing from our Baptism when we were grafted onto Christ and became members of His Body. Part of the work of Advent is not “work” at all but a prayerful transformation of the focus of our hope. If we get too caught up in the busyness of Christmas preparations we might truly miss the opportunity that Advent presents, “expectant and hopeful waiting.” On Friday, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception when we recall that Mary was conceived without “original sin” as a special grace preparing her to accept the invitation of the angel to become the Mother of God. May our yearning for Christ in our lives mark the days of Advent so that if he should come soon he will find us ready and happy for his return!

First Sunday of Advent Page Four

435 St. James

This past week our Level Five students learned about Advent, as we wait with joyful

expectation for the coming of the Christ Child. There is more to waiting, we need to

prepare. The Church gives us many tools to use. We have antiphons, short prayers that

come from the prophets of the Old Testament that call on God to come. A different one

is said each day ending with O come, O come, Emmanuel! We also have the Advent

Wreath and the Advent Calendar which help us count down the days. It’s also the start of

the Church calendar as we begin again with the birth of Christ. Why not make a “new

year” resolution to start a new tradition in your family, saying grace before meals, or

lighting the Advent Wreath each night. Start the New Liturgical Year with a bang!

What will you do to prepare?

Question of the Week: are you watchful, are you alert? Do you

know when he will come?

Advent Wreath Blessing: Week One:

The first purple candle is lit, and the prayer for the first week is said each night.

Stir up thy power, O Lord, and come, that by thy protection we may be rescued

from the dangers that beset us through our sins; and be a Redeemer to deliver us;

Who lives and reigns with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

ever one God, world without end. Amen.

During the first week one candle is left burning during the evening meal, at prayers or at

bedtime.

What’s happening in

Faith Formation?

Are you creative? Do you like to design, draw, and cut with scissors? Come

in and speak with our Faith Formation team! It’s time for a makeover! Many

hands make light work!

Hospice is a philosophy of care, not a location. Our focus is on goals of care

expressed by the patient, and management of symptoms to maximize comfort and

allow for patient goals to be realized. The hospice plan of care is designed to assure an end of life experience that is

dignified, comfortable, addresses spiritual concerns, and includes family members. Hospice care does not hasten

death, rather, it celebrates life.

Good Shepherd Hospice, as part of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, is coming to Mercy Medical Center. We are

proud to share that a new hospice inpatient unit will open in the Summer of 2018, which will be the only Catholic

hospice unit in Nassau County. We, at Good Shepherd Hospice are excited to continue our mission to provide

compassionate, comprehensive and family-focused care to all our patients and families across Long Island. Call

631-465-6350 or visit goodshepherdhospice.chsli.org/ to learn more.
