The Hamilton City Council met Feb11, 2019. Mayor Keena called the meeting toorder at 7:10 p.m. Present: Mayor Wendy Keena,Council Persons Sue Enerson, Vicki Hill,Nancy Maxwell. Minutes: The February minuteswere distributed and approved by all. Finance: The council approvedpayment of the monthly bills. Old Business: Carla Gilbertson andLisa Keney declined to fill the open cityAuditor position. Vicki Hill has a person interested inthe position and will do follow up with her. Mayor Keena will have anothermeeting with Wes Argue in regard tocondemnation of hazardous buildings inthe city. New Business: Sue Enerson willbe added as the 2nd signer on the city’sbank accounts in place of the formerAuditor. 5th Ave needs to be cleaned out asschool bus has a difficult time picking upchildren. The mail truck got stuck behindthe post office and Wall Street betweenthe Township Road and Paige Ave also isimpassable. Mayor Keena will have thesnow blower operator clean up the 2problem areas. Approximately 700 student members, advisors,and chaperones from across North Dakota gatheredin Bismarck, April 7-9, to participate in the 74thAnnual North Dakota Family, Career andCommunity Leaders of America (FCCLA)Leadership Conference. The theme of this year’sconference was “North Dakota – Believe inYourself”. With that theme in mind, delegates participatedin general sessions, workshops, and experiencedconference exhibits that assisted in strengtheningtheir leadership abilities as individuals andcommunity members. The keynote speaker wasEddie Slowikowski, speaker and entrepreneur.Using a high energy approach, Eddie tookparticipants on the ride of a lifetime to discover thegreatness that lies within all of us. He related howsetbacks can set us up for futures success. How werespond to “losing” shows us who we really arebecause, when the chips are down, your truecharacter is revealed. Eddie’s message concludedwith this, “In the end, being the best version of youis all anyone can ask. And that’s where trueleadership begins”. Over 230 delegates participated in StudentsTaking Action with Recognition (STAR) Events.Receiving a gold medal from the Valley-Edinburgchapter were Bailey Phelps, Carley Reilly andEmilee Reilly. Their event was in the Focus onChildren category and focused on healthy eatingand fitness for 5 & 6th grade students. Alsoreceiving a gold rating were Lindsey Iverson,Jaiden Kringstad and Kaylee Pastorek. Their projectwas titled Our School, Our Friends, Are Safe in theNational Programs in Action Stop the Violencecategory. Luke Estad and Christian Duff served as
timers during the STAR events. STAR Events arecompetitive events in which members arerecognized for proficiency and achievement inchapter and individual projects, leadership skills,and career preparation. Competitive events providean opportunity for the top two individuals or teams,in each of the twenty-one event categories, toadvance to the national competition which will takeplace July in Anaheim, CA. Brendan Durand and Connor Slama wereValley-Edinburg chapter voting delegates to deciderepresentation for District 3 member of the NDFCCLA Officer Team. Abby Romfo, Langdon, wasvoted as State President for 2019-2020. The conference closed with an awards brunch.The Valley-Edinburg chapter received amembership award for the greatest percent increasein male students that have joined ND FCCLA thispast year. Bailey Phelps and Carley Reilly wererecognized for their involvement in FCCLA, schooland community activities with Senior HonorAwards. Also, two ND FCCLA sponsoredscholarships were presented to Brett Fitzgerald ofthe St. John Chapter and Samantha Overend of theMidway Chapter. FCCLA: The Ultimate Leadership Experienceis unique among youth organizations because itsprograms are planned and run by members. It is theonly career and technical student organization withthe family as its central focus. Participation innational programs and chapter activities helpmembers become strong leaders in their families,careers, and communities. FCCLA is supported bythe North Dakota State Board for Career andTechnical Education.
