Paddle8 presents Enchanted Duquette, a sale of works by the legendary Hollywood designer

Features paintings, furniture, and jewelry from the estates of Duquette’s sister and the actor James Coburn

Online auction house Paddle8 presents Enchanted Duquette, a sale of furniture, paintings, jewelry, and objets d’art by Tony Duquette, the designer whose lavish and fantastical interiors made him a Hollywood favorite for more than five decades. The majority of the sale is drawn from the collection of Duquette’s sister, Jeanne Duquette Newman, and features jewelry, furnishings, and paintings that have never before been available to the public. The sale also includes furnishings and objects from the home of silver-screen idol James Coburn and his wife Beverly’s Beverly Hills home. Duquette filled the Coburn’s Spanish Colonial house with an eclectic and exotic mix of Hollywood High-Style furniture alongside art, textiles, and antiquities that they amassed during their world travels. Among the highlights of the sale are a group of floral and bird paintings that Duquette created for L.A.'s Bullocks Wilshire department store. Though better known for his furnishings and interiors, Duquette’s paintings were displayed at the Louvre, where he was the first living American painter to be the subject of a solo exhibition. In 1935, Bullocks Wilshire hired Duquette, at the time an art student, to redesign their Art Deco building's lobby every season, with the goal of inspiring the ladies of Los Angeles to also refresh their wardrobe seasonally. Legendary interior designer Elsie de Wolfe was so impressed by the interiors that she sought out the young decorator and took him under her wing, launching his career. The skill that Duquette developed through his paintings greatly informed the embellishment and sense of texture that later came to characterize his interiors.
