Divine Mercy Sunday April 8, 2018
His Excellency, the Most
Reverend Edgar M. da Cunha,
Bishop of Fall River, has
authorized the formation of a
new class for the formation of
Permanent Deacons beginning
in the spring of 2019.
Who Is the Deacon? Let them be merciful and zealous, and let them walk
according to the truth of the Lord who became servant of all. St. Polycarp’s admonition to deacons, Lumen
Gentium, #29
The Order of Deacons was restored as a
permanent and public ministry in the Roman Church at
the Second Vatican Council. The aims of the diaconate
are to enrich and strengthen the works of service being
performed by the Church, to enlist a new group of devout
and competent married and single men in the active
ministry of the Church, and to aid in extending needed
charitable and liturgical service to the faithful. Wives of
deacons assist in many of these areas. The number of
deacons has continued to grow steadily, and there are
now more than 15,000 permanent deacons ministering in
the United States. There are more than 90 active deacons
in the Diocese of Fall River, and nine men currently in
formation.
A deacon is ordained to the three-fold ministry of
Word, Liturgy, and Charity, working in obedience to his
bishop and in close fraternal cooperation with priests.
Through Holy Orders, the deacon acquires a special
relationship to the bishop. While all Christians are called
to serve others, the deacon is an icon of the Servant
Christ in the Church. The deacon should be a creative
leader, one who gradually initiates a meaningful response
of loving service from the community to those who are in
spiritual or material need. The deacon’s ministry of
Word, Liturgy, and Charity may include:
¨ Word: proclaiming the Gospel, preaching at Mass,
catechesis, evangelization, and sacramental
preparation
¨ Liturgy: serving at the Eucharistic Table, solemnly
baptizing, witnessing marriages, bringing viaticum to
the dying, and presiding over funerals and burials
¨ Charity: serving the poor and marginalized, visiting
the sick and imprisoned, ministering to the dying.

From Father Perry
I take this opportunity to once again express my sincerest
thanks to everyone who worked so diligently and so
devotedly to make the ceremonies of Holy Week and
Easter weekend so beautiful. The countless details which
go into planning the ceremonies is often not evident, but
would surely be evident had they not been attended to, so
again thank you to so many.
The season of Lent provided numerous opportunities to
receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As a matter of
fact, they were approximately 22 scheduled times that
confessions were offered at the parishes of Our Lady of
Victory and Our Lady of the Assumption during the
Lenten season.
This weekend, now that the cold and flu season seems to
be behind us, we will once again begin offering
Communion under both species. The fullest expression of
the Eucharist takes place when Communion is received
under both species. The Church teaches us that the grace
of the sacrament is received whether we receive just the
body or just blood of Christ.
As we resume the practice of receiving Communion
under both species, it is also a good time for us to closely
self-examine how we receive Communion. The practice
of an act of reverence before Communion should not
disrupt the Communion line, nor should it become a trip
hazard for the person who is following behind us. An act
of reverence should not take place as the priest or
extraordinary minister is trying to place the host in your
hands or on your tongue, but instead, before that time.
When receiving the Most Precious Blood, this is to be
done from the chalice. The practice of intincture (dipping
the host in the Precious Blood) is forbidden for the
obvious reason of potential spillage and disrespect to the
most Precious Blood of Jesus. Since there are many
people with gluten intolerance issues, the placing of the
host in the Most Precious Blood also then makes it
impossible for those people to receive Communion.

Cape Cod Caring Cards—Food Cards Have you wondered what our dedicated volunteers are selling after Masses? Do you food shop at Shaw’s, Stop and Shop or Whole Foods? Well...after most Masses you can buy Cape Cod Caring Cards. These are cards that you can purchase for face value and use when you food shop or eat out. How this helps — 5% of the cost of the card is donated directly to Housing Assistance Corporation's Project Prevention Program. They provide financial assistance to prevent your neighbors from homelessness following a short-term crisis. So, when you food shop, why not buy a card and use it to pay for your groceries or
purchases? If cards are not being sold at the Mass you attend, consider signing up to volunteer your time or
come to the OLV Office and purchase cards during office hours. ¨ This Ministry would not be successful without our
faithful volunteers….and we need more help! If you can share your time and talents after the 7am and 8:30am Masses or with other aspects of the program, please call Paul at 508-737-6406. Thank you!
Send Your Petitions To Our Lady of
Lourdes Tom Duffy, an OLV parishioner, will be traveling to Lourdes in May. He has, once again, kindly offered to bring with him any petitions that people would like to be left at Our Lady of Lourdes. Petitions can be left at the Parish Office until April 30.

You can pick up your OLV Golf card at the OLV office during regular office hours. Food Pantry Needs Just a reminder --- the Food Pantry at St. Francis Church provides food for many
needy families from our parish and this area of the Cape. They are always in need of non-perishable food and household items (no clothing) especially at this time of year as we approach the winter months. There is a box by the side entrance in Our Lady of Victory Church, a basket by the main entrance of Our Lady of the Assumption and a basket in the rear of the church at Our Lady of Hope, if you would like to drop off an item or leave a small bag that could be distributed. So many families would be most grateful for what you could share with them. Thank you on behalf of all who use the Food Pantry.

DIVINE MERCY
SUNDAY
Who taught you mercy?
Moral leaders agree that the number one lesson we need to teach children
is mercy. If the next generation is to survive in an ever-shrinking world full of very different cultures, the willingness to seek understanding and to dialogue across worldviews is key. The starting point for that kind of empathetic listening is a heart open to compassion. Compassion literally means “to bear with”: to see and feel another’s burdens. Who taught you mercy, and how will someone learn it from you?
“The community of believers was of one mind and heart, and . . . they had everything in common.”

SOLEMNITY OF THE
ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD
The three best words
Mary is the mother of the church and the model of all Christians. At the message of an angel, she believed beyond all reason and offered her life in service of God’s plan. Her response, “let it be,” is the answer of every disciple who trusts in God’s word to make all things new. In the season of Lent, God invites us to believe that we, too, are called to that service. Even though we are sinners—“how can this be?”—we live in hope of God’s forgiveness and trust
that God will work through us to bring about the
fulfillment. “Then Mary said, ‘Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.’ ”

Be prepared to testify
In the Book of Acts we are told that “with great power the apostles bore witness to Resurrection.” In fact, said Benedictine monk Columba Stewart in National Geographic, the “apostles were the movement’s cutting edge, spreading the message across the vast trade network of the ancient world and leaving small Christian communities in their paths.” This missionary zeal is passed on to each new generation of Christians, but it takes different forms. Today, although many Christians still travel to foreign lands to serve the poor and give witness to Christ, believers are also encouraged to evangelize—spread the gospel—within their own homes, parishes, and local communities. How is your evangelization going? Hint: They should know you are Christian by your love.

MEMORIAL OF STANISLAUS, BISHOP& MARTYR
Like Archbishop Óscar Romero of El Salvador in the 20th century and Thomas à Becket of England in the 12th century, Saint Stanislaus (c. 1030-79) was, according to tradition, killed in church, in this case while celebrating Mass. Stanislaus’ murderer was the king of Poland, with whom he had a number of disputes over land and the king’s harsh rule. Throughout history the church has come into conflict with the powers that be. Jesus, of course, was put to death by the religious and political authorities of his time. Dorothy Day, of Catholic Worker fame, wrote in 1966: “Every new development for the last three centuries has brought [human beings] closer to the state of affairs in which absolutely nothing would be recognized in the whole world as possessing a claim to obedience except the authority of the State.” But for Christians, she said, Christ must be our guide. Who’s yours?
“But whoever lives the truth comes to the light.”

Listen to the right voice
If it’s all up for grabs, why pay
attention to what others teach or
preach when everyone has their
own relationship with God?
After all, the Bible says, “Obey
God, not humans.” Well, yes—and no. Indeed the buck
does stop with God in that we are oriented by our nature
to listen to God and respond to God’s call. But there’s a
lot out there to compete with our natural inclinations—
fear, vulnerability, peer pressure, misinformation, and
more—all of which can provide compelling alternative
messages. Fortunately God graces us with not only our
own lights but scripture and the church to give us a
better sense of how to navigate. Think about the ways in
your own life that God uses to connect with you.
“We must obey God rather than men.”

MEMORIAL OF MARTIN I, POPE, MARTYR
Gone should not be forgotten
Saint Martin is the last pope in history to be honored as
a martyr, but his death for the faith did not occur
quickly. After being elected pope in 649 he made
enemies by opposing a heresy and condemning the
emperor for supporting that heresy. As a result, while
lying sick, Martin was kidnapped and carted off to the
East, where he was jailed and eventually exiled. During
this time he was given poor food, not allowed to wash
regularly, and came down with dysentery. On top of that
he was ignored by his church back home. “I wonder . . .
at those who belong to the church of Saint Peter for the
little concern they show for one of their body,” he
wrote. Let this saint’s experience motivate you to
perform the corporal works of mercy denied him—like
clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, and visiting the
prisoner. “There was not a needy person among them.”

It is I Jesus had sent the disciples on ahead of him in a boat.
During the night the going got pretty rough. In the midst
of their struggle—remember, they were rowing—Jesus
came toward them on the water, a startling development
even though it meant rescue. Jesus allayed their fears
with three words: “It is I.” Actually, it’s only two, in
Greek: “I am.” Sound familiar? They are the words God
uses to identify himself at a number of places in
scripture. So Jesus isn’t merely saying, “Don’t worry,
it’s me.” He’s declaring that he is God but also that God
simply is—the foundation of everything. Next time
you find yourself rowing against the waves of trouble,
remember you’re always on solid ground with God.
“He said to them, ‘It is I. Do not be afraid.’
Divine Mercy Sunday April 8, 2018
Saint Faustina: Mankind’s need
for the message of Divine Mercy
took on dire urgency in the 20th
Century, when civilization began
to experience an “eclipse of the
sense of God” and, therefore to
lose the understanding of the
sanctity and inherent dignity of
human life. In the 1930s, Jesus
chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina
Kowalska, to receive private revelations concerning
Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary.
Divine Mercy Sunday: St. Faustina’s Diary records 14
occasions when Jesus requested that a Feast of Mercy
(Divine Mercy Sunday) be observed, for example:
“My daughter, tell the whole world about My
inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be
a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor
sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy
are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those
souls who approach the Fount of My mercy. The soul
that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion
shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and
punishment. ..Let no soul fear to draw near to Me. … It
is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first
Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it
turns to the Fount of My Mercy.” (Diary, no. 699)
On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of
St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday
of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy
Sunday.
The Image: Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in a vision,
with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left
touching his garment above his heart. Red and white rays
emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water
that was poured out for our salvation and our
sanctification. The Lord requested that “Jesus, I trust in
You” be inscribed under his image. Jesus asked that his
image be painted and venerated throughout the world: “I
promise that the soul that will venerate this image will
not perish” (Diary, no. 48) and “By means of this image I
will grant many graces to souls” (Diary, no. 742).
The Chaplet of Divine Mercy: The Chaplet was also
given to St. Faustina with this promise: “Encourage souls
to say the chaplet which I have given you” (Diary, no.
1541). “Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at
the hour of death. … Even if there were a sinner most
hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he
would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire that
the whole world know My infinite mercy” (Diary, no.
687). FMI: search Divine Mercy at www.usccb.org

The Green Team The great Catholic writer Ernesto Cardenal in Abide in
Love observes: "Everything in nature has a
trademark, God's trademark: the stripes on a
shell and the stripes on a zebra; the grain of
the wood and the veins of the dry leaf; the
markings on the dragonfly's wings and the
pattern of stars on a photographic plate; the panther's coat
and the epidermal cells of the lily petal; the structure of
atoms and galaxies. All bear God's fingerprints." Go for a
walk and look for God's trademarks. Better still, use a
camera to document evidence of God's fingerprints in the

Deacons, Called to Serve, continued…...
Becoming a deacon involves a vocation from God; it is not simply another volunteer job or ministry. Therefore, a person becomes a deacon not just out of personal desire or interest, but for the common good of the Church as determined by the bishop. It is for these reasons that the selection, discernment, and formation of deacon candi-dates are rigorous efforts. The entire formation process, in fact, is a journey of discernment. Through systematic opportunities for prayer, spiritual direction, formal course work, and pastoral-skills development, the candidate is able to reflect critically on his life and the various minis-tries to which he might be assigned. This process of dis-cernment continues to the very moment of ordination.
If you have any questions regarding the Diaco-nate process you can contact or talk to either Deacon Jim or Deacon Ted. Or you can talk with Keith Caldwell, who presently is in the ninth class of diaconate formation. Each of us will be more than glad to spend some time with you. In fact, we look forward to it. You can always call the OLV office and they can contact us for you, or see us when you are at church or parish functions.
In addition, you can go on the diaconate website at the Diocese of Fall River, Office of the Permanent Di-aconate for much more information. Looking forward to talking with you. God bless, Deacon Jim, Deacon Ted and diaconal candidate Keith
