Although the community was well aware that they both had lepro- sy or Hansen’s Disease, to which it was later referred, the couple was accepted here. Mr. Johnny was an excellent pho- tographer. I could still remember seeing him in his gray suit walking around a wedding reception with a square-format camera in hand and camera gadgets hanging from his shoulders. Mr. Johnny and Mrs. Ann did a lot to educate the community about lep- rosy. They were always very welcom- ing to visitors, whether at their home or their photography shop. They seemed to enjoy visitors. Mrs. Ann always loved to see the children who would go to the shop to have their pictures taken. She would help to make sure the children were posed and pretty for their pictures. They came to church here despite having many reasons not to and, even though Mr. Harmon was not Catho- lic when they lived here, he became a Catholic later in life. After years and years of scientific research, leprosy was found treatable with medicine and there was no reason for the patients to live in isolation in Car- ville anymore. They were encouraged to find residences elsewhere and the aged were transferred to a special facility. Mr. Johnny and Mrs. Ann were great gifts to our community and our commu- nity embraced them. We all became bet- ter people for having them in our lives. Mr. Johnny used his talent for our ben- efit and, in return, we helped him to sup- port his wife and family. In his later years, Mr. Johnny wrote his autobiography, “King of the Mi- crobes,” which gives us a glimpse of his life with a dreaded disease. When preaching one day, the late Bishop Ken Untener made the comment, “If we are going to use this world’s measurements a person might say, ‘This is a great parish, this parish I belong to, because it has an oil well and it doesn’t cost us any money. Ev- erything’s free. It’s got air conditioning, too, and we don’t have to pay for it. And it’s got thick carpet and great, comfort- able cushions, and the priest looks like Robert Redford and he never preaches long--one minute and he’s done. And the buildings are magnificent...” Ken went on to say, “But those aren’t the things that make a parish great in the eyes of the Lord. If you think about it, what are some things? One thing is caring. A good parish is a place that you never have to deserve, that you never have to earn. People here can say to anybody, ‘I’m glad you’re here.’ That would make it a great parish, even if they’re in debt.” “A great parish has inclusiveness and different kinds of people, and lives out what Jesus prayed, ‘That they may be one.’ Parishioners have a sense of being together, not like being at sepa- rate tables in a restaurant, but people who smile and are together. Parish histories can never tell the greatness of the people who cared, who believed in God, who welcomed, who included people, who went out to people in need--in need of someone to talk to or in need of money or in need of food-- and helped them.” Jesus taught the disciples how to get ready: Simply make sure, day in and day out, that the poor and suffering are the center of your concern.” That’s what Pope Francis teaches us by his words and his actions. Care for the poor. Embrace them physically, let them feel your love and take them into your heart. In this week’s gospel Jesus touch- es someone who is untouchable and makes him whole again. The person is so moved with the healing touch of Jesus that he runs to tell the commu- nity. The entire community is affected because that community could not be whole until its member was healed. Who among us, the members of this community, needs healing? If Je- sus should come to our community, who would he be drawn to? Who would Pope Francis touch? How could our community be made whole? Why do we wait for someone else to do for us that which we should do for ourselves? To whom is God calling you to bring a healing touch? An embrace?

A VOCATION VIEW--Feb. 15, 2015Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Gospel says, “Jesus was moved with pity when He saw a leper.” Are you moved with love and compas-sion when you see the outcast of today’s society? Today Jesus continues to call forward men and women to minister as He did. If you think God is calling you to a Church vocation, call or email Fr. Matt Dupre at 225.336.8778, [email protected], or visit www.diobr.org/vocations.

COMMUNITY CATECHESIS--Feb. 15, 2015Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel, a man deemed untouch-able, is put back “in touch” with the living com-munity of God’s people. But there’s more. Je-sus’ touch transformed not only the diseased person, but the whole community. For the community itself was not whole until this com-munity member was restored to wholeness and returned to the community. Jesus asks us to seek healing for ourselves and become an instrument of healing for others.

Children’s Ministry will gather to celebrate Lent on Sat., Feb. 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for children ages 5 to 12. They will meet in the small hall and snacks will be served. Parents of children who will be attending should contact Ma-ria Simon, 985-773-4251 before Thurs., Feb. 19. Please notify Maria at that time of any food allergies.

Call For Tax Statement Parishioners who would like a record of their tithe to the church should call the church office and request a copy from Julie, 265-3953, ext. 10. Please allow a day or two for pro-cessing your request.

Friday Meals in Lent Meals will be served at the Good Children Hall every Friday during Lent beginning on Feb. 20. Lunches can be picked up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a cost of $9 per plate. A variety of meat-less meals will be available. These dinners help to support several local groups and organizations.

The parish office will be closed Mon. and Tues., Feb. 16 & 17 for the Mardi Gras holiday.

Ash Wednesday Masses will be held at 6 a.m., 12 noon and 6:30 p.m. on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015.

Ashes will be distributed only during Mass.

Way of the Cross will be held every Friday during Lent at 3:30 p.m. Groups and individuals are invited to pray the Way of the Cross at any time

during the day or early evening.

Our next Family Faith Formation Session will be held on Sun., Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m.

Families are reminded that your family social justice project can be turned in at any time.

Find Yourself A Nail Some people tie a string around their finger to remind them of something they don’t want to forget. This Lent we hope that everyone will join us in finding a nail as a reminder to meditate daily on the crucifixion of Christ and its meaning to each of us personally. We will provide a meditation book and a pin for you, but we would like to strongly stuggest that you have avail-able a real nail to use as the focus of your daily prayer. Let your nail remind you each day of the day’s message, which will be sum-marized in the title of each day’s devotion. If you can carry just that title in your mind each day, meditation will have begun. Pick up your books at church on Ash Wednesday.

You Are Invited toTake Part in Rice Bowl

Join your parish family and Catholics across the coun-try in making a life-changing journey this Lent with CRS Rice Bowl. Through Catholic Relief Services and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge, your Rice Bowl participation serves the most vulnerable glogally and in this community, where 25 percent of your donation funds local programs. Rice Bowls will be available in church on Ash Wednesday. The young children have already received them at Faith Formation. Please be sure to use the easy and fun resources to more closely encounter Jesus and deepen your Lenten experience. Remember, your sacrifices change lives.

Children’s Ministry toCelebrate Lent

Second Collections On Ash Wednesday we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection sup-ports Catholic organizations that provide affordable shelter and train seminarians in a region that still struggles from the effects of Soviet rule. By providing pastoral care, catechesis, and funding for building renovations, your donations help to restore the Church and build the future in the region. Please give generously to the collection on Ash Wednesday. Next weekend, we will take up the annual Collection for Black and Indian Missions. This collection exists to help dioc-esan communities to build the church and preach the Gospel of Jesus among the African American, Native American and Alaska Native people of God.
