A Note From The Pastor… This weekend is Seminary Sunday, a weekend during which we
celebrate the Seminarians of the Archdiocese of Chicago through our
Second Collec"on at all of the Masses. Funds received from this
collec"on will specifically support Seminarians preparing to serve as
Priests in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Please see Cardinal Cupich’s
le#er later in this bulle"n. This weekend we welcome Thomas Leah, a
Seminarian preparing for Ordina"on to the Priesthood. He will speak at
all of the Masses. Please give him a warm OLH welcome!
This Friday, September 29th, is our Annual Oktoberfest in the Parish
Center beginning at 5PM. Lots of great food including bratwurst (from
Usingers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin), sauerkraut, hamburgers, hot dogs,
and drinks will be served. The Women’s Club will be doing a 60/40
Raffle for 4 Gi* Baskets, and selling Fall Floral Arrangements. Special
thanks to the OLH Knights of Columbus and the OLH Women’s Club for
facilita"ng this event. Come out and enjoy an evening of fellowship, fun, and good food.
Next Sunday, October 1st, is Respect Life Sunday. There will be a Holy Hour next Sunday, October 1st,
from 7PM to 8PM in the Church. There will be Exposi"on of the Blessed Sacrament, Recita"on of the
Rosary, Prayer, concluding with Benedic"on. Please come and pray for a Greater Respect for the Right
to Life.
Making morally acceptable decisions regarding our health has become increasingly difficult as
technology con"nues to advance. St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Old Mill Creek (on
Route 45) will be hos"ng a Conference on “End-of-Life” Issues next Saturday, September 30th, from
9AM to 11:30AM. Fr. Timothy Fiala will be the Keynote Speaker. Fr. Fiala has received his Doctorate in
Moral Theology from the Catholic University of America. He will address ques"ons regarding medical
treatment for the terminally ill, hospice care, health care direc"ves, and more. He will also speak about
the immorality of so-called “assisted suicide”.
There will be a Public Square Rosary Crusade on Saturday, October 14th, at 12 Noon at the Shiloh
Park in Zion. The Rosary will be recited publicly in observance of the 100th Anniversary of the Fa"ma
Appari"ons in Portugal, when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd-children. Look for
more informa"on in next week’s bulle"n, and contact Blanca Mar"nez with any ques"ons at:
(847) 731-0509.
I want to remind you that our Parish has subscribed to an exci"ng new online pla;orm: Formed.org.
As parishioners you have Free Access to all the online content (Catholic movies, CDs, faith forma"on,
and more). Please go to our website, www.ourladyo!umility.org for more informa"on. Just login to
www.Formed.org with our password, QHVFMV. Create an account with your User Name/E-mail and
Password.
Let us pray for our Seminarians, and for all those God is calling to the Priesthood. Let us also pray for
a Greater Respect for the Right to Life, and for all those affected by the recent hurricanes and
earthquakes.
God Bless,
Fr. Paul

A Eucharis"c Holy Hour For Life

general mobiliza!on of consciences, and a united ethical effort to create a
great campaign in support of life.”
Please join us for a Holy Hour next Sunday, October 1st, from 7PM un"l
8PM in Church. We will be praying for the Protec"on of Life, and for the
con"nua"on of our religious freedom at this Eucharis"c Holy Hour. The
Holy Hour will conclude with Benedic"on. Let us join together to pray, and
help to build a culture of life.
“O God, our Creator, from Your provident hand we have received our
right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness… We ask You to bless us
in our vigilance for the gi# of religious liberty… Grant, we pray, O heavenly
Father, a clear and united voice to all Your sons and daughters gathered in

Ask A Priest
Q: I have heard a lot of talk recently about discovering my ‘gi"s of the Spirit.’ Does everyone have a gi"?
How do I go about discovering mine?
A: About 10 years ago, a new business opened shop in my parents’ neighborhood; The Kabbalah Center. I
remember laughing when I ini"ally saw it, but could only shake my head and sigh as I no"ced how much traffic was
passing through those doors. I reflected out loud, ‘So many people searching for answers, but so few that know where
to look.’
Perhaps you have no"ced this as well; the Catholic Church has developed a reputa"on for being ‘boring’ or ‘uninspiring’.
People have developed the iden"ty of being ‘Spiritual, but not Religious.’ In their opinion, the Catholic Church has
nothing to offer. Eastern spirituality, in the opinion of so many folks, can teach the Church a thing or two about God!
This loss of awareness of her mys"cal Tradi"on is one of the most regre#able things that has happened to the Holy
Mother Church in recent years. The Truth of the ma#er is that, ever since her earliest days, the Church has consistently
enjoyed an outpouring of the gi*s of the Spirit! On Pentecost Sunday, the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles.
Those floodgates of grace have been open ever since, even when we have failed to pay them very much a#en"on.
Charism is the theological term used to describe the extraordinary power given to the Chris"an by the Holy Spirit for
the good of the Church. Let’s spend a few moments analyzing that sentence. Charisms are extraordinary – they go
beyond the everydayness of our lives. They involve power (in Greek: dynamis) – they dynamically allow us to affect the
world around us. Each of us has a Charism, or Charisms – no one can feign powerlessness. Charisms should not be
confused with voca"ons, although they may go hand in hand. You may have the Charism of heroic pa"ence that
enables you to be a good mother, but you have the voca"on of motherhood. Finally, these gi*s are not for us, but for
the Church – they are not for selfish use, or for profit, but to help others get to Heaven. For a good sample list of
Charisms, let us turn to 1 Corinthians 12.
To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to
the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gi*s of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty
deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varie"es of tongues; to another
interpreta"on of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distribu"ng them individually to each
person as he wishes…
Some people God has designated in the Church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty
deeds; then, gi*s of healing, assistance, administra"on, and varie"es of tongues… Strive eagerly for the greatest
spiritual gi*s.
Now, when St. Paul talks about a Charism like healing, he is not talking about a doctor who prescribes medica"on. An
individual with this Charism is literally able to heal people with a touch or a prayer (in the same way Jesus and the
Apostles did). This might sound incredulous, but this is a legi"mate, authen"c gi* of the Spirit. Perhaps one of you has
this Charism, just wai"ng to be discovered!
Charisms take all shapes and sizes. St. Joseph of Cuper"no had the Charism of flying (and not in an airplane!).
St. Padre Pio could read the souls of his penitents. St. Vincent Ferrer had the power to raise people from the dead!
Despite the diversity in Charisms, one constant remains; these great saints all used the gi*s they were given to glorify
God and convert souls for Christ.
So how do we go about discovering our par!cular Charisms? Well, as St. Paul men"ons in the above passage, some
people are given the gi* of discernment of spirits; it is their Charism to help other people discover their Charisms! From
October 6th-9th, St. Patrick Church in Wadsworth will be offering the Light of the World Retreat. This is a great forum for
prayer and reflec"on, and to interact with likeminded people. In the future, OLH hopes to host a Called and Gi"ed
Workshop, which specializes in discernment of Charisms. In addi"on, we have several people at the Parish, both clergy
and lay leaders, who are available for individual spiritual direc"on. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at the Parish
Office to set up an appointment.
Dear friends, each of us have our gi*s to share. May we be wise in our discernment of these Charisms, and fearless in
manifes"ng them to the world, that we might win many souls for Christ.
Peace,
Fr. Mike
