My Dearest Poppy,

This editorial will come as a bit of a surprise! Mainly, because it’s not the one you carefully oversaw in your role as “sub editor, with helpful hints”!

I was awake at 4.30am on the 4th March listening on ‘5 live’ to a PODCAST about Love Letters, something which is not so popular today in the electronic age as it was years ago. They were very moving, and I thought “Why don’t I do that”. We have a pretty special occasion coming up on the 13th when we will have been married for 60 years. “Why not tell everyone about our love?” I thought.

It all started out in Pilning Church when I arrived in 1953 to take on the job of organist. You were in the choir. We soon became attracted to each other and your Dad put on his best brown suit when you invited me to dinner between Sunday services. We planned our wedding at St Peter’s and it got hurried up because suddenly the crisis in Suez boiled over so we took the plunge! It was another 6 months before our meetings at Temple Meads came to an end. Then, 60 years of ‘Up’s and downs’ the same as everyone else. Marriage is about give and take, and we have managed to work our way through all it threw at us. Regrets? One really, that I was not there to hold your hand when our sons were born (it wasn’t the done thing then). So, let me sum up my feelings in one of my poems,

A SPECIAL PLACE

We all have special places in our lives, perhaps a favourite National Trust property or somewhere we have spent happy times. In Pilning there is a building that has been very special to me all my life and that’s St. Peter’s Church.

Photographs have turned up recently taken of the church through the years, the earliest one was of a salt negative photograph of 1859, about as early as you can get for photography. Another photograph taken over a hundred years later was a picture of my baptism. I seem to be looking intently at the font and you could add the speech bubble “Future Churchwarden checks the font for wear and tear.”

St Peter’s has seen many changes, as can be seen by the different photographs. This year sees the culmination of eight years’ work by the Church Council and the Reordering Group to refresh the building for the next stage in its existence. It has been a test of faith getting the permission to undertake the work, securing the funding, drawing up the plans and finally seeing the work take place. It also has meant letting go to a certain degree and this can be the most discomforting thing of all.

The last night before the work started I went into the church to sort out a

few things and the experience was very upsetting, fear of the unknown, challenges ahead and the feeling that things would never quite be the same again.

We all face such issues in our lives, not necessarily of a material nature but perhaps the loss of a loved one or knowing that a situation will cause a lasting change to the way we live. With the work at St Peter’s we have been letting go and trusting that God will bless our endeavours to update and refresh the church building. As we move through this period of Lent we remember Jesus’ betrayal, denial and suffering sometimes even at the hands of those who loved him.

We have however the expectation of Easter, that although we have been through a great deal God raised Jesus from the dead for our sins and that is our great hope for the future. As we come to the end of the building work leaving behind what we had to some extent we will do well to remember God’s promise of new life in the risen Christ.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to St Peter’s, this special place, exploring the new ways we can share God’s love with the community.

Sparrows

This has stuck in my mind for 40 or so years.

Back in the 1970's, in the days before double glazing blocked sounds as well as cold, I happened to be in my kitchen when an extremely loud chirping caught my attention. At the edge of the lawn was a circle of house sparrows with a cock sparrow in the centre. All the birds were bobbing their heads. chirping louder and louder while the sparrow in the middle, feathers fluffed out, wings flapping, jumped up and down. Suddenly he burst out of the circle, hopped onto the flowerbed and pulled the petals off a yellow crocus flower while the others watched.

Flower destroyed he bounced back into the ring amid loud chirrups (of congratulation?) and they all started again, working up to a crescendo of noisy excitement. Was it some sort of male test; a sparrow rite of maturity? I'll never know, I looked at my little clump of yellow crocuses brightening up my late winter garden....and rapped on the window.

PILNING & SEVERN BEACH W.I.Our Speakers this month were Ron and Gina Pritchard who are the local co-ordinators for Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). Ron gave a very informative talk on the above subject, some of our Members had heard of RP but not all of us. Ron and Gina have two sons with this problem and now spend much of their time helping others with this problem and also making people aware of RP by talking to groups such as the W.I's. As this is a complex and very important subject it is with Ron's permission that the following is an excerpt from the leaflet handed out to us.

ABOUT RP- Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is the name given to a group of hereditary disorders that affect a layer of the retina - the light sensitive lining at the back of the eye. The millions of cells that make up the retina slowly deteriorate and the eye loses its ability to transmit pictures to the brain.

The first symptoms of RP are night blindness, bumping into people and objects (often recognised as clumsiness in a child) and difficulty seeing in dim light. In most cases this is followed by loss of peripheral vision, though with some types of RP central vision will deteriorate first. Ultimately, RP can lead to blindness.RP can arise and be diagnosed at any age but most often it is seen first in children and young adults. It is recognised as one of the most common causes of loss of vision in people of working age, affecting about 25,000 people in the UK. RP is known to be quite a large group of disorders, caused by flaws in various genes. It sometimes accompanies other health problems or disabilities, for example, Usher syndrome combines hearing loss, often from birth, with RP. There is currently no treatment that will halt the progress of RP or reverse its effects.

If you would like further information on this subject you can contact Ron or Gina on 01454-772927 or e-mail: [email protected].

Pilning and Severn Beach W.I. Meetings are held at Mafeking Hall, Pilning on the third Wednesday of each month at 10.30am - 12pm. New Members always welcome. Freda O’Neill

It’s with us again! All our lovely ‘knitters’ deserve a break and are welcomed along to this event. The amount of beautiful items you have produced during the year never ceases to amaze! These garments used to find their way all over Europe, but it has become too expensive to do this, therefore we help people nearer home who find themselves in need of the useful items you produce. They are taken to the Bristol Methodist Centre, who distribute them where they are most needed.

Thank you all for your splendid efforts, and come and see the tables sag under the weight of the efforts of First Class Knitters. You will all enjoy the coffee and chat.Pearl

EASTER COMPTON NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

April 2017 - “Creeper” Burglaries

There were a number of so-called “Creeper” burglaries in the regionrecently. These occur where offenders try the door handles of UPVC doors to see if they have been locked properly. If they haven’t, the doors can be opened using a small screwdriver. Simply raising the door handle does NOT properly lock the door as the locking points do not engage. Always use a key to lock the door, then remove it and put it out of reach, but somewhere you can get to it in case of emergency.

News from Severn Beach School

Severn Beach Primary School values its local community and is keen to develop links with, and take part in, as many community events as possible. From carol singing to local residents and businesses, tree and bulb planting with the Parish Council and welcoming visitors to our assemblies we keep very busy! This is something that will continue to grow and develop over time and we look forward to being part of the Severn Beach Festival in the summer. As well as the local community, we also take pride in being part of local school communities. This can range from working together to develop the teaching and learning in our schools, to planning joint events such as sporting occasions.

On Sunday 26th February the ‘Confidance’ after school club from Severn Beach took part in the Stages event at the Colston Hall. Children who have attended ‘Confidance’ since the beginning of the year met at the venue to practice and prepare for the event. This was followed by an afternoon concert in front of parents, family and friends. The event was supported by a large of number of groups over two days, some from schools and some

independent dance groups. The Severn Beach performance was fantastic and they danced with skill, rhythm and lots of energy! Not only was it a lovely event for pupils to be part of and an opportunity for parents to see the children perform, but the children were brilliant ambassadors for our school. Their behaviour and attitudes were a real example to all – they did the school proud! Well done to all the pupils who took part and also to Amy Boucher and Emmaus Church for supporting the school with the dance club.

Kids get the last word! A little girl was watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair in contrast to her dark hair. She looked at her mother and said, 'Why are some of your hairs white, Mum?' Her mum replied, 'Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.' The little girl thought about this for a while and then said, 'Mum, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?'

Pilning and Severn Beach Gardener’s Club

It was suggested a visit to Painswick Rococo garden would be a good trip for the club, but although an email was posted not enough interest was forthcoming. So, at the beginning of February on an overcast day we made our own way to see for ourselves.

It was very popular, the cars were parking in an overflow area – a sloping field. We had to queue to pay for entry, and sized up the café as a good place to take refreshments after our discovering walk. The path to enter lead to a viewing platform that allowed a marvellous view of the garden spread out along a valley with snowdrops glimpsed in drifts nodding in the breeze. Wonderful flamboyant architecture could be seen adding to the surprise at finding such an endearing vista.

The woodland path showed snowdrops in abundance alongside streams and trickling water, looking very natural under the canopy of winter bare trees. Up the slope and perched on the summit a very grand pigeon loft big enough to explore inside. A Beech tree past its prime had been sculpted into a fairytale castle perched high above our heads. The more formal garden had a lovely kitchen garden with fruit trees all around, and the maze was enjoyed by adults and children.

Very glad we found this enchanting garden hope to visit again. Next meeting: April 4th The Life of a Landscaper by Will Rowe

NEWS FROM ST PETER’S PRIMARY SCHOOL

STAFF NEWSWe are currently in the process of interviewing for our new Headteacher and in the next edition of In View, we will be able to announce our new Head’s name who will commence his/her post in September of this year. In the meantime, below is a flavour of the activities going on at St Peter’s.

JASON & THE ARGONAUTS – a few snippets from Archie HutchingsOn 8th February Year 5 & 6 experienced a spectacular performance of Jason & the Argonauts by students from the Bristol Old Vic at the Armstrong Hall in Thornbury. Bravely and intelligently Jason and Hercules went on a heroic mission to find the Golden Fleece. In my opinion the overall play was great. My favourite parts of the play were: courageous group gathering, Well put together songs, and spine tingling skeleton wear.

Report below by Emmie Tillson – Year 6

The mighty and brave Jason was easy to understand from the start to finish. The costumes that were rarely changed were creative and modern. Their voices were excellent and loud, they filled the hall. Overall, the quality was brilliant, despite them being only university students.

EYFS DRESS UP DAYReception had a wonderful day celebrating their topic “The Second Star to the right!” They dressed up as Peter Pan characters and even watched the film!

We had a lot of fun all term exploring with shadow art, making puppets, making boats and checking if they would float or sink. A really great topic! Miss Calver

JAMAICAN DAYIn January, classes 1 and 2 were fortunate to have a visitor called Ms Lois Francis visit us. She taught them about her home country of Jamaica and the wonderful fruit and vegetables that grow there. Class 1 were lucky enough to try a range of new foods and even try fiery ginger beer! Fake News

News. Nowadays, it’s everywhere. On your phone, on your TV, online, you cannot escape the endless tirade of the stuff. Some of it is interesting, such as by-election wins or new government policy. Other times it is a distraction with things touted as news that really aren’t, such as research on queueing. Finally, some of it (many days most of it) is useless celebrity “news” such as Beyoncé being pregnant. However, some news, unfortunately, is fake and a worrying trend for ‘fake news’ is emerging as more and more of so called “news”, simply isn’t true.

In November 2016, post-truth was announced as the Oxford Dictionaries word of the year, due to the prevalence of the ‘fake news’ epidemic. Fake news may be due to misrepresentation or simply be a flat out lie, but nevertheless the news story is fake. Sites like “The Onion” which purposely write fake stories for satire are now being rivalled by stories that are almost as sensationalised, yet are posted and shared online as fact!

It has been shown that for many of us our emotional reaction to these articles overrides simple logic and common sense in determining their truth. During the US election, it was found that the same headline about either candidate, be it for or against them, was assumed to be fact by supporters if good and false if not. Neither group appeared to check the article thoroughly for actual evidence of its validity (or falsehood), instead relying on their emotional response.

This becomes a problem as more and more people rely on unregulated sites for their main source of news. In a recent

survey, 25% of people questioned said Facebook was their main source of news. Since the site does not regulate what people post, a fake news story will be shared countless times before anyone does any fact checking. The real worry is that news sites, that should check every story before it is run, can get caught up in this and so run stories which are false, resulting in more people believing it and passing it on thus perpetuating the cycle.

So, how do we avoid being a victim of fake news. Firstly, do not obtain your news from an unverified source. BBC news will almost always be a better source of news than your mate Dave on Facebook. Secondly, think with your head, not heart. Don’t just assume something is true because you agree with it. Think about whether it makes sense and what the actual facts in the story are, if any. Finally, why does this matter? It matters because news needs to be factually accurate as people rely on it to make informed decisions in many areas of their lives. If we start to formulate opinions on feelings, rather than facts, and base our views on gossip or lies, the healthy debate and discussion which society thrives upon becomes a shouting match of falsehoods and that is not something that any reasoned person desires.

We entered a Scout cooking competition where four of the troop Eloise Davis, Jess Webber, Lucy Perkins and Amie Lidiatt Browning cooked a meal on a camp stove. They had to use the theme of Scouting past, present and future. They cooked vegetable soup rivers, with flat bread rafts, a chicken risotto campfire with green bean logs, tomato flames, and apple pancake stacks with icing sugar fleur de lis. They did really well and came third, and just missed second place by one point. Well done Scouts!

Scouts had great fun cooking pancakes in February in Mafeking Hall. They only managed to set the smoke alarm off once!

Don’t ‘mix it’ with kids! A pre-school teacher was watching the children while they were drawing. She occasionally walked around to see each child's work. As she got to one little girl who was working carefully, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, 'I'm drawing God.' The teacher paused and said, 'But no one knows what God looks like.' Without looking up the girl replied, 'They will in a minute.'

AN UPDATE FROM TANG SOO DO!

Firstly, congratulations to the following people who graded successfully in February for their next belts. All three had very impressive scores, and stood out on the day with their techniques and effort.

Ashlee Williams - 2nd Gup - Red BeltRuby Rogers - 5th Gup - Green Belt TagSarbi Field - 7th Gup - Orange Belt Tag

We are now working towards the next major events which include a Championship in March held in Patchway, a championship in May held in Bournemouth and then the next grading in June for all the ‘gup’ grades.

Me and my long serving black belt Pam, have been silently working hard for the last 6 months training most

evenings and pushing ourselves to the limit. When you read this, we hope to have successfully graded on the 4th March for our next level of Black Belt - 3rd Dan. This is the highest level as a standard black belt you can be, with the next level being a ‘Master’. The grading is at least 4 hours long, and a real test of your mind power as well as physical condition and knowledge.

Pam has been a real inspiration to me in grading for this belt and I am so proud to be the instructor of someone so inspirational. Adults, if you’re reading this, Pam is not ‘young’ any more. She has been training over 25 years, starting as a mother in 1991. Anyone can do this, trust me. She is proof that you can achieve anything you dream of!

Pilning & Severn Beach Parish Council met on Monday 6th March 2017, as per the published agenda for a meeting of the Parish Council with 7 councillors in attendance.

After many years of service, former Parish Councillor Ivor Humphries has decided to stand down from his position as a trustee of Almondsbury Charity. The Parish Council would like to thank Ivor Humphries for his long service and agreed that Heather Rickards would stand as a trustee from the next meeting.

Almondsbury Charity can be traced back to 1322 when John de Brokenborough established a ‘chantry’ or Trust consisting of private land, the rents from which were to be used to support a priest whose task was to sing Mass for the souls of the founder and his family and all departed Christian souls. Today the Charity helps any organisation or individual in Almondsbury, Bradley Stoke North, Easter Compton, Patchway and parts of Pilning who find themselves in financial need. Full information can be found on their website www.almondsburycharity.org.uk

You may not be aware that the Parish Council own the cemetery and Tower at Northwick. Unfortunately, a hole

was recently noticed in the roof of the Tower and after closer inspection it was found that the hole is causing damage. As a safety measure the Tower has been surrounded by fencing to prevent anyone getting too near the Tower. After discussion at the meeting, it was decided that until funds become available the Tower will remain fenced off.

Annual Parish Meeting – Monday 3rd April 2017 – Pilning Village Hall, Pilning – 7pm start. This is your opportunity to ask questions and hear about the work undertaken by the Parish Council over the last year along with plans for the future.

The next parish council meeting will be held immediately following the Annual Parish Meeting on Monday 3rd April 2017 at Pilning Village Hall, Pilning. All documents and minutes relating to parish council meetings are posted on the website (psbpc.co.uk).

To contact the parish council please telephone the clerk on 01454 631499 or by email [email protected]

Pilning Flower Show Saturday 26th August 2017

The organisers of the Flower Show, at their first meeting of the year, decided to take a three-pronged approach towards charities for the 2017 event. Firstly, they will be supporting the refurbishment of St Peter’s Church, Pilning by sponsoring a chair. Then the main funds raised by the show will be divided between Severn Beach Village Hall and the Thornbury Stroke Support Group. Chair Richard Edwards says “This is a slightly different approach from what we’ve done in recent years, but we felt this will provide a nice balance between local needs and a very worthy local health charity. We look forward again to receiving the full support of the community”.

Turning to the show itself, now is a great time to think about what seeds you might sow for flowers and vegetables you could enter for the 26th August event. But organisers would also like to prompt everyone to start planning for the other categories. So it’s a heads up to all the wonderful creative crafters out there to get your projects underway for; crafts, wool work and sewing. The photography classes are again an area that may benefit from some forward planning and why not get some practice in with your baking, preserves and home-made drinks. Remember whether you are experienced or new to it - all are welcome! Please visit our Facebook page or dig out an old programme for more information.

All practices in South Gloucestershire offer a minor injuries service for registered patients. The service is available during normal GP surgery opening times on weekdays.

You need to book an appointment through your surgery to use the service.Healthwatch South Gloucestershire would like to hear feedback from residents who have used the minor injuries service through their GPs rather than attending A&E at hospital. We would also like to hear from residents in general regarding your views as to whether this is a good alternative to attending A&E or indeed if you are aware that this service exists.

Please note if you, or a member of your family, suffer a minor injury outside of normal GP opening hours you can ring NHS 111 for advice. Calls are free and the service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The advice remains that if you experience a major injury or illness, such as severe breathlessness, abdominal pain, chest pain, major broken bones or stroke, you should call 999.

Please get in touch using our email: [email protected] call us on: 01454 543 402 or visit our website to find out more www.healthwatchsouthglos.co.uk

Pilning Surgery

Ordering your repeat prescriptions ‘online’ is changing…..We wrote to all of our patients back in April 2016 to tell you about the introduction of the Telephone Triage Service which replaced the Open Surgery and thought that we should let you know how things are now that the change has taken place.

We know that there was a lot of concern about moving from the Open Surgery which everyone had been familiar with. For this reason, we have been closely reviewing how patients feel things have been going by asking patients who have used the telephone triage service to complete a feedback form.

Some of the comments we have received are:• Fast and efficient. Much better than

queuing in the cold for an ''emergency'' appointment

• Brilliant, very reliable and professional service

• Its great that you can talk to a doctor and don't necessarily need to sit in the surgery and wait especially with young children as this can be very difficult

• Very helpful staff. Explained situation so the doctor had an idea of the problem before ringing me back. Quick appointment.

• Reduces strain on NHS and demand for face to face appointments. A national telephone triage service would be a good means of increasing resource efficiency.

We feel that it is important to share with you these positive comments as the staff have been aware that there is still some negativity, often from patients that have either not yet used the service or who are unsure how to use the service.

There has been a lot of coverage in the national press about the pressures in General Practice with the closure of practices and staff shortages, and we at Pilning and Montpelier Health Centre have been under similar pressures. We are consistently trying to find the correct balance of appointments, with both pre-bookable and same day appointments through telephone triage, for our patients.

We welcome your feedback and would ask for patience as we constantly work to improve the system in the best way we can. All of the Practice staff work to provide a high level of safe and efficient medical service to all of our patients.

How to use the same day telephone triage service

• If you want to request an appointment for the same day, you need to contact the surgery between 8am and 9.30am.

• When you speak with a member of the reception team they will ask for details of your current medical concerns- whilst you are not obliged to provide this information it will assist the Doctor's in managing calls effectively and prioritising urgent issues.

• The Doctor will call you back to triage the urgency of your need.

• If the Doctor cannot treat you over the telephone, the Doctor will give you an appointment that day at a specified time or you will be offered an appointment on another day.

Due to new guidelines by NHS England patients are being encouraged to have online access to services in GP surgeries. For this reason, with effect from the 1st April 2017 we will no longer be accepting repeat prescription requests via the current form on the Surgery website.

If you are16 years or over you can now request your repeat prescription via the new online service “Patient Access".

New online service "Patient Access" - This is a new service that you will need to register for. Not only will you be able to see what medication you are on, but it also allows you to request repeat prescriptions at the click of a button. You will also be able to book/cancel online appointments, amend your contact details, view any allergies you may have and see your immunisation status. If you haven't already registered for this service you will need to come ,in person, to the surgery and bring along 2 separate forms of identification (1 form of photo ID and 1 item showing proof of address) You will then be given your login details with instructions on how to register. This service is not available for children aged under 16. For more information on how to register and how Patient Access works please visit patient.emisaccess.co.uk or see receptionist Tom at the surgery who will be able to help you register for this service.

Please note there is no change to the other ways you can order your repeat prescriptions at the Surgery.

The junction is to give HGVs direct access to the industrial sites on each side of the motorway. A safe segregated crossing will be provided for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrian use. Construction is set to start December 2017 and will take 2 years to complete. The question of access to local roads was raised. Developers on the Westgate development have access to the B4055. There will be no signs directed to the new junction. The Council is trying to arrange a meeting with these developers.
