Brown Deer Honored by NationalCivic League as All-America City

n June 19, 2016, a contingent of thirteenrepresentatives from the Village of Brown Deerand School District of Brown Deer received the“All-America City” award for their amazing

presentation of how the community ensures that allchildren are successful in school and life. The award, givento 10 communities each year, celebrates and recognizesneighborhoods, villages, towns, cities, counties, tribes andregions that engage residents in innovative, inclusive andeffective efforts to tackle critical challenges. Communitypresentations are also an essential part of the All-AmericaCity experience. Finalist communities have 10 minutes topresent the story of their work and their community to a

jury of national civicexperts. Communitiesare free to createperformances that besttell their story--includingeverything fromstraightforwardpresentations to skits, from mock TV shows toheartfelt stories, fromdancing to spoken-wordpoetry and rap.

The National CivicLeague trip was anexperience of a lifetime

for all involved: students, teachers, school and villageadministrators and truly represented Brown Deer’sinnovation, effective community problem-solving, andcollaborative spirit.

You may be wondering how did we come together to

work on this project? LastFebruary, Village Trustee JeffBaker brought the idea backto the Village staff while attending a conference. Villageand School District staff met to determine if developing anapplication was even feasible as the deadline was only 3weeks away. We believed we had three wonderful projectsrelated to the theme: 1) Badger Meter Park and access togreen space, 2) The Master Campus Plan of the SchoolDistrict, 3) Award-winning State Character Educationprogram at Brown Deer Middle/High School. On March 9,2016 the application was sent out to the National CivicLeague. We had no idea of how we would fare but knewthis was a great way to work together to tell our BrownDeer story. Our 4.5-square-mile Village of Brown Deer maybe small compared to some other nearby suburbs, but wehoped our ideas of creating a great village and schoolsystem--and one of the very few racially integrated areacommunities would resonate with the selection committee.

Then on March 24, 2016 we got the email thatannounced our selection! We almost missed it as it wentinto the spam folder! Twenty cities were selected rangingfrom Connecticut to California, from small to large, andrural to urban. Brown Deer was the only representativefrom Wisconsin and the second smallest city invited. Twoyears ago, Eau Claire made the trip and was designated asan All-America City joining only four other past Wisconsinwinners including: Racine 2003, Green Bay 1999, Wausau1984 and Madison 1978. Only 550 cities nationwide haveeven won the award since its inception in 1949.

While we were thrilled with the announcement, thereality of what we would present and how we would get toDenver, Colorado became a daunting task. We didn’t have

a funding mechanism to pay for this event as both Villageand School District budgets were set. However, just likethe cooperation you see every day in our Brown DeerVillage, two community leaders stepped up to assist us todevelop a 60-day plan to get us to Denver. Marge Jaberg,President of the Brown Deer Foundation, and BarbaraFleming, President of the Education Foundation of BrownDeer, met with the Village and School Districtadministrators to set goals for the funding that would beneeded. With their great organizational skills and ideas weset a fundraising goal of $15,000 that would cover theregistration, transportation, housing, supplies and foodcosts. A silent auction held at the Village VolunteerAwards program sponsored by the Brown Deer Foundationgarnered over $1,200 as our first attempt to raise the muchneeded funds by May 30. Village and School District staffworked together to solicit funds by visiting local businesspartners. The Education Foundation reached out to ourBrown Deer alumni. Within two weeks, we had surpassedour budget goal and raised $25,000 in donated funds! Thisis exactly what happens in an All-America City when wecome together and identify our challenges and worktogether to find solutions. We were living the All-AmericaCity mission through this process.

Special thanks goes to Rich Meussen-Badger Meter,Milwaukee Bucks player (and Brown Deer alum) SteveNovak, the NBA Players Association for a matchingdonation, Julie Cook-Quirk, who designed our logo forshirts and buttons, Ann Griffin for making the 150 buttons,Assistant Village Manager Erin Hirn, who gatheredmaterials for the community fair, the Village and SchoolDistrict Boards for supporting the trip, the parents of thestudents who entrusted us with their children for the trip toDenver, the students, teachers, and administration, and allof those that volunteered time to prepare our delegation.

The Brown Deer delegation included: Nate Piotrowski -Community Development Director, Tosha Womack-BrownDeer Middle/High Principal, Dr. Deb Kerr-Brown DeerSuperintendent, Patrick Schmitz-theater teacher and writerof the presentation, Tyler Brownfield-band director, andeight Brown Deer students--Raeden Bostwick-Blazer (AKAFreddy Falcon), Jordan Caple, Briana Key, Maliah King,Antonio Montiel, Armon Sample, Calvin Vang and Megan

Yang. “All-America Cities are places where people are coming

together to address important issues like youth successand racial equity," said Doug Linkhart, the President of theNational Civic League. "These cities and towns areharnessing the power of community to build their ownfuture."

On behalf of the Brown Deer delegation we werehonored to represent Brown Deer and thank everyone fortheir support in getting us to Denver to tell our Brown Deerstory. It truly does take a Village!

Character.org, a non-profit organization that supportsthe advancement of character development in schools, communities and workplaces across the U.S. and globally, designated 67 schools and four districts from 15 states asNational Schools and Districts of Character for 2016.

The Brown Deer Middle/High School is one of thedesignated schools. “The Brown Deer Middle/High Schoolis very grateful and honored to be recognized byCharacter.org as one of the 2016 National Schools ofCharacter. We are also proud of all of the students, teachers, staff members, parents and community memberswho have embraced the Brown Deer Way not only in ourschools, but in their homes and businesses throughout thecommunity,” said Principal, Tosha Womack.

Character education is an educational movement thatsupports the social, emotional and ethical development ofstudents. It is the proactive effort by schools, districts, communities and states to help students developimportant core ethical (recognizing what’s right) andperformance (doing what’s right) values such as caring, honesty, diligence, fairness, fortitude, responsibility, grit, creativity, critical thinking and respect for self and others.

Since the inception of Character.org’s Schools ofCharacter program’s in 1998, more than 263 schools and14 districts have been designated as National Schools orDistricts of Character, impacting more than 600,000students’ lives. In addition, this year two internationalschools have applied and will be evaluated for internationalrecognition as a part of a pilot international program oncethe National Schools of Character have been announced.

Each year, Character.org (formerly The CharacterEducation Partnership) and its state affiliates selectschools and districts that demonstrate a dedicated focuson character development programs that show positiveimpact on academic achievement, student behavior andschool climate. Schools and districts selected in Januaryas State Schools of Character, along with those schoolswho reapplied in their three-year designation of StateSchool of Character, were forwarded to Character.org forconsideration for national recognition as National Schoolsof Character.

Through an in-depth and rigorous evaluation process, these schools were found to be exemplary models of

character development. Of the schools named this year, one district and 14 schools are former National Schools ofCharacter reapplying for the national designation. Criteriafor selection are based on Character.org’s 11 Principles ofEffective Character Education, a guide to providingstudents with opportunities for moral action, fosteringshared leadership and engaging families and communitiesas partners in the character-building effort.

"We are extremely proud of this year’s designatedschools and districts for their dedication to characterdevelopment which has proven to increase the well-beingof so many students’ lives across the United States andbeyond ," said Becky Sipos, Character.org’s President andCEO. "These character initiatives create conditions forlearning where students are thriving and growing intoethical members of our society. They are developinglifelong skillsets they will leverage well into their adultlives.”

Character.org will honor the designated schools anddistricts at its 23rd National Forum on Character Educationto be held the weekend of Oct. 14-15, 2016, inWashington, DC. Visit www.character.org to learn moreabout the National Forum, the Schools of Characterprogram (State and National), and the 2016 nationalhonorees.

Superintendent Dr. Deb Kerr proudly shared with theboard of education, “What set Brown Deer apart fromother districts was the involvement of student leaders fromthe inception of the program several years ago. Studentsand teachers working together to plan relevant lessons. One of the hallmarks of our program is that students co-teach the lessons with our faculty. This is a win-win foreveryone involved. Brown Deer is the place to be wherepeople are willing to work together for the common goodof all.”

BROWN DEER TEACHERS AND STAFF

Learning and Leading All Year Long

As part of our strategic action plan for communication, the School District began to evaluate its website foraccess to content, graphic representation and navigation. The district took a look at several companies that providesites for school districts as well as various sites fromother businesses and districts as part of our research. Ourgoal was to secure a provider at reduced costs whileincreasing the level of customer service available throughthe use of our website. We know that timelycommunication is accomplished through the use of ourwebsite and that parents, prospective parents, and schoolcommunity frequent the website daily. We selected CMS4Schools as our provider. A number of districts utilizeCMS4 Schools which is managed through CESA 6 out ofOshkosh. We worked with designers to hone in on itemsthat are important to users. For example, parents want tosee things like lunch menus, have easy access to viewtheir child’s grades and know where to go to contactsomeone at the school in case of a problem. As a result,we have updated our faculty listings which are nowsearchable, so parents have easy access to teacher andprincipal contact information.

We also wanted to update the look of the website tobetter tell our Brown Deer story and market our mission,

vision, values and goals. We look forward tolaunching the new site in the next month. In

the meantime you will be able to utilize theexisting web pages for all district

information despite a slightly differentformat. Stay tuned for details!

A Part of Our Community, Jewish Family Services

hen we think about community, we think aboutthe things that make Brown Deer a specialplace to live: engaged and welcomingresidents, commitment to volunteerism and

concern for others, and dedicated leadership. It is nosurprise that the Village has opened its arms to twohousing residences established by Jewish Family Services(JFS), a not-for-profit that shares the Village’s vision ofcommunity.

In 2010, JFS opened Deerwood Crossing SeniorResidences, a community of 96 apartments for seniorswith both independent and assisted living options.Located on the corner of Bradley Road and ShermanBoulevard , Deerwood Crossing promotes an age-in-placeconcept that allows residents to access services as theyneed them while remaining in the comfort of theirresidences. In accordance with the mission of JFS, nearlyall of the apartments at Deerwood Crossing are affordableto residents who earn under 60% of the area medianincome. JFS is proud to partner with Goodwill Industries toprovide dining and housekeeping services at DeerwoodCrossing.

Two years later, JFS opened Bradley CrossingSupportive Housing Community across the street on

Bradley Road. Bradley Crossing is a unique housingcommunity dedicated to providing housing and services tofamilies and individuals with and without disabilities. Lastsummer, we expanded our campus to include fouradditional two-story buildings on Village Lane and BradleyRoad. Bradley Crossing now contains a total of 114 one-,two-, and three-bedroom apartments – all of which areaffordable, and half of which are reserved for householdswith disabilities. Patty Ehlers Peterson remembers her brother Steve Ehlersas someone who not only lived his passion, but alwaystook others with him on the journey.

For Steve, it was all about the specialty cheeses, andas long as the local store owner held court behind thecounter of Larry’s Market on N. Deerwood Drive, hewanted everyone else to experience the fun right alongwith him.

“He loved interacting with customers,” said Patty. “Heloved sharing his knowledge and having everyone try thenew cheeses that came in.”

Sadly, Steve lost his battle with colon cancer on May31 when he passed away at the age of 65.

So beloved was the Brown Deer favorite that “we havebeen overwhelmed with kind words and cards from peoplewho knew Steve,” said Patty, who manages the marketthat features an extensive cheese case and deli;homemade soups; wine and other specialty grocery items.

The store has a long history within the Ehlers family.Steve’s father, Larry, who grew up on River Lane, not muchmore than a stone’s throw from the business, worked atwhat was then the Brown Deer Food Market for yearsbefore purchasing the market and bestowing it with hismoniker in 1970.

Steve worked alongside his father at the store as hegrew up in Cedarburg with older brother, Jeff, and Patty, the youngest of the three siblings, delivering groceries toLake Drive to prominent community members such as theUihlein and Pabst families. Steve graduated fromCedarburg High School in 1969 and studied engineering atGeorgia Tech for a year before leaving college to make hisway through Europe, most significantly France.

Steve purchased the store with his wife, Cindy, in 1981.Soon after, he went to a food fair in New York and beganwhat his sister describes as “his love affair with cheese.”After meeting decorated Wisconsin cheese artisan MikeGingrich at a show, Steve agreed to sell Gingrich’s award-winning Pleasant Ridge Reserve at the market and so thejourney began. In keeping with European tradition, Steve

would keep out a cuttingboard and allow customersto sample the wares beforemaking their purchase.

As a member of boththe American CheeseSociety Board of Directorsand the Dairy BusinessInnovation Center Board,Steve didn’t just want to do the best he could for himself,he wanted the next guy to succeed also, his sister said.

“Steve truly loved to help and mentor people,” saidPatty. “If he believed in you and your product, he was 100percent behind you. He was very involved in the cheesesand helped a lot of people grow their product. He was alsovery honest and people appreciated that about him. Ifsomething wasn’t working, he would tell you. People likedthat.”

More than just the face of the corner market, Steve wasan involved and enthusiastic community member whoalways strived to make Brown Deer a go-to location. Hewas not only instrumental in starting the village’s annualfestival/marketplace Eat & Greet , but also the VIBESconcert series of free local performers in the village parkon select Wednesdays in the summer. Steve was also apast president of the Cedarburg Library Board and heserved on the City of Cedarburg Board of Appeals. He andCindy also volunteered for the Families AnonymousProgram. The father of two now-grown sons, Andy andPeter, Steve was known as a smiling face who was happyto engage with customers of all ages.

“He loved little kids and kids loved him,” said Patty. When the village lost Steve, it lost both a piece of its

past and a major part of its day-to-day fabric that makesthe village of Brown Deer the colorful tapestry it is, but theshow will go on, promised Patty.

“The market has definitely become a generationalstore,” she said. “We have many longtime customers andwe know many of them by name and what they like. Thestore has been here over 100 years and we’re going tokeep going.”

Larry, now 92, still comes into the store for theWednesday, Thursday and Friday lunches and thecustomers love to interact with him, Patty said of herfather.

“The customers love to see him,” she said. “Thetradition will continue.”

Larry’s Market is located at 8737 N. Deerwood Driveand can be reached at (414) 355-9650. Daily lunchspecials are: Mondays-mac and cheese; Tuesday-tacos; Wednesday-paninis; Thursday; Chicago-stylehot dogs; Fridays, April through October-outsidegrilling.

National Breastfeeding Month

Ghost Cars?

ugust is National Breastfeeding Month, with thefirst week designated as World BreastfeedingWeek. This year’s theme—“Breastfeeding: A Keyto Sustainable Development”—focuses

on ways that breastfeeding supports the UnitedNation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These goals were adopted in Sept. 2015 to endpoverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackleclimate change by 2030.

Regardless of whether a child is born in ahigh- or low-income country, or into a rich orpoor family, breastfeeding prevents malnutritionand decreases the risk of obesity.

Breastfeeding improves long-term health, decreasing the risk of many non-communicablediseases, including asthma, diabetes, and heartdisease in the baby, and cancer and obesity inthe mother.

Breastfeeding is one of the top interventions to reducechild mortality. It is estimated that 13% of under-5 yearold deaths could be avoided if optimal breastfeeding wasachieved. Additionally, it saves billions of dollars in

healthcare costs by dramatically reducing hospitaladmissions for infectious diseases.

Breastfeeding is an investment in environmentalsustainability, providing a renewable foodthat involves no packaging, storage, transportation or fuel to prepare.

You can read about all 17 goals andthe way breastfeeding supports them athttp://worldbreastfeedingweek.org/

Public health begins withbreastfeeding, setting babies off on thehealthiest start in life. The North ShoreHealth Department supportsbreastfeeding through a Maternal andChild Health grant by offering a homevisit with a nurse and a Certified LactationCounselor after baby’s birth, andassisting businesses to become

breastfeeding friendly. If you are interested in learningabout our new Breastfeeding Friendly Workplacerecognition program or have questions about our services, contact us at 414-371-2983.

Here is one way to blend into thecommunity--“Ghost Cars.” What are“Ghost Cars”? They are a newinnovative approach the policedepartment is using to blend into thecommunity. The new squads are blackin color with black reflective decals. Ifyou glance at them quickly you maynot notice the police decals on thevehicle, but at certain angles or in theright light the police decals will reflectbright white. The police department isusing these squads for regular patrolas well as for their High Visibility TrafficEnforcement (HVTE). This stealthyappearance allows the squads to beless noticeable when on routine patrolbut when their full police lightingpackage is turned on, they are veryrecognizable as a police squad. Lookfor them in a neighborhood near you!

alking into the recently-opened AppeThai, located at 3900 W. Brown Deer Road, Suite#110, a diner gets to experience traditional

Thailand in their own backyard. With décor that is simpleand casual but still contemporary, AppeThai presents ahomey yet industrial look with every detail from the lightfixtures to the bar stools to the artwork on the walls.

“I wanted to give that image and feel of Thailand,” saidBang Tongkumbunjong, who owns the restaurant with hiswife, Pam, and works as the eatery’s chef. “This issomething you don’t see around here.”

The look is just one aspect; what keeps customersreturning is the menu of authentic Thai fare that featuresfavorites such as Pad Thai, Pad See Ewe, and hot plateslike volcano chicken; a variety of curry (red, green, yellow, duck and Massamun) and stir fry dishes; some spicyselections including the Pad Ped Moo Pah (wild boar);seafood options; soups, salads and appetizers and manymore favorites. Daily specials, for both lunch and dinner, showcase the taste of Southeast Asia, from street food tohomestyle dishes.

“I try to be as close to Thailand as possible in theingredients that I use,” Bang said. “I use a lot ofingredients that most other Thai restaurants do not use.”

When the couple opened AppeThai this spring, theywere looking to set down permanent roots in thecommunity by feeding it well—something Bang has donefor decades since arriving from Thailand in 1988 andbecoming a chef at the much-loved The King & I

restaurant, owned by hisaunt and uncle, in downtown Milwaukee.

In 2002 Bang opened Bang Thai Cuisine in Mequonand he operated the restaurant—as well as a coffeeshop—until 2008 when he decided to take some time offand work as a consultant for a year. Bang spent thefollowing six years at Cosi in Fox Point, but his heart keptcoming back to his true passion of running his ownrestaurant so when he and Pam saw the open location inthe village, the vision of AppeThai began taking shape.

“We saw the space and closed our eyes and this iswhat came about,” he said.

As the restaurant got up and running, Bang soonrealized the loyal customers he had accumulated over theyears had not forgotten about him and were quite pleasedat his return to the kitchen. Since Bang and Pam openedthe doors, they have had an overwhelmingly positiveresponse, a mix of old and new customers. “Most peopledon’t know this is my place until they see me and thenthey say, ‘Oh, you’re back!’” said Bang. “This is the placewhere I can do what I do best. The customers appreciatewhat I do and I appreciate their support.”

But as much as he loves his day job, family comes first, said Bang, referring to Pam—who came from Thailand in2006 and earned a master’s degree in marketing fromConcordia University--and their three sons, ages 4, 6 and8, as the couple closes the eatery on Sundays andholidays, and they often take long weekends.

“People don’tbelieve me whenI say it’s notabout the money,

but that’s true,” said Bang. “It’s not about work, it’s aboutthe balance between life and work and spending timewith your family. “

Bang hopes his sons will respect the industry theywere born into and look to their parents as role models, but that the restaurant will not dominate their lives.

“We want to give our boys the tools to live andexperience what their mother and I do, but that will beone piece of the puzzle,” he said. “We want them to dowhatever they want to do when they grow up and we willsupport that.”

The restaurant’s laidback and welcoming atmosphereis a reflection of Bang and Pam themselves—down-to-earth, engaging and pleasant.

“I’m simple: what you see is what you get,” Bang said.“I’m here to stay. I wake up in the morning and get to dowhat I love to do every day and make sure to the best ofmy ability that the customer is satisfied. I give thecustomer my best.”

As for complaints? Bring them on, he said. “I love tohear them!” said Bang. “I always want to know what I cando better the next time. Everything happens for a reasonand hopefully this is my final journey.”

AppeThai also serves beer and wine and has anoutdoor dining patio area. Business hours are 11 a.m. to2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and4:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The restaurant is closed Sunday. To reach AppeThai or to learn about catering options, onecan call (414) 362-4264.
