BRIEF: To get people interested in reading again, by using a range of classicwriters/stories to inform and inspire people. Each classic story is displayed inway that reciprocates the tone of voice of the book, highlighting the keyquotes through a range of different processes.
RELATION TO DESIGN PRACTICE:I wanted to do a brief that was formed from the basis ofliterature, and then using the processing skills that I am developing to try and highlight thebooks or novels key quotes. The books for each story are spread across a range of postersthat was deemed appropriate, using 7.2pt Baskerville Old Face, allowed me to t the contentonto the posters and then develop the suitable process to treat the quotes. I wanted the
text on the posters to mimic the books, therefore in-keeping with the theme of the brief. This briefallowed me to explore processing and type, and how both can compliment each other, whilst usinginteresting content to dictate the style of the piece. It also allowed me to use the skills that I havebeen developing in branding, to create an informative piece of design. I managed to cover arange of different design methods in this brief, from processing, publication design and branding.

Great Expectations , the book is divided across 3 A2 posters, following themain plot of the book. The inspiration behind the treatment for this brief wasthe idea that within the plot of this book there are a lot of twists and tailswhich means you may not be able to see it all clearly. I used this idea todevelop and edit the type. As the posters progress through the story so does
the clarity of the type.Using the laser cutter, I kiss cut the design into the card. That way it wouldhave a rustic and textured feeling to it, resonating the heritage of the story.

Fig 1. Animal Farm, this book is split across two A2 posters digitally printed onclear lm acetate. The inspiration behind this book is the fact that the storyis transparent, although complex there are no subtleties within it. I choseto highlight the main quote in red as the book is taking an angry andaggressive look at humanity and society.
Fig 2. AMBER SPYGLASS, this book has been split across 3 A2 posters, printed ontocard. When compared to Animal Farm, the Amber Spyglass is very different. Thereare a lot of underlying hidden themes throughout this book which inspired theclear spot varnish of the quotes over the top. This subtle nish allows you to onlysee it in certain light, again mirroring the style of the book.

Both Animal Farm and Amber spyglass were designed around the inspirationof the tales being slightly obscure. Using this I experimented and developedprocessing techniques to try and display the portrayal of the the stories byusing the stock and print methods to make the stories clear or unclear asthe case may be.

Under Milk Wood, this book is spread across a range of two A2 posters, printedonto handcrafted satin stock. The inspiration around this poster was takenfrom the traditional content of the book, therefore I chose a traditional fontand wanted to use an old process such as embossing to add depth and atactility into the poster. That way the poster would have a traditional feel to it
and bring the content some depth, which is re ected in the complexity of the storyand writing skill. Both posters received with same treatment, highlighting the keybeginning to the book and then the end.

Lord Of the Rings , this book is spread across three A2 posters printed initially ontocard. I took the inspiration for the process and design from the book itself. Tolkein, spent a lot of time describing the scenes involving scenery and wars, I wanted tocombine both these ideas. I chose a decorative and complex font to illustratethis. This poster was all about the intricacy of the type, and using the process to

create charred edges mimicking the inspiration from the wars and ghts thathappen throughout the tale. I used the laser cutter to cut through the card, allowing me to bring together my two initial concepts for this story.

J.R .R. Tolkei n
John Ronald Reuel
Tolkien, CBE (3 January
1892 2 September
1973) was an English
writer, poet, philologist,
and university professor,
best known as the author
of the classic high fantasy
works The Hobbit, The
Lord of the Rings, and
The Silmarillion.
The Lord of the Rings
is an epic high fantasy
novel, the story began
as a sequel to Tolkiens
earlier, less complex
childrens fantasy novel
The Hobbit (1937), but
eventually developed
into a much larger work.
It was written in stages
between 1937 and 1949,
much of it during World
War II. It is the third
best-selling novel ever
written, with over 150
million copies sold.
The title of the novel
refers to the storys main
antagonist, the Dark
Lord Sauron, who had
in an earlier age created
the One Ring to rule the
other Rings of Power as
the ultimate weapon in his
campaign to conquer and
rule all of Middle-earth.
From quiet beginnings in
the Shire, a Hobbit land
not unlike the English
countryside, the story
ranges across north-west
Middle-earth, following
the course of the War of
the Ring through the eyes
of its characters, notably
the hobbits Frodo
Baggins, Samwise Sam
Gamgee, Meriadoc
Merry Brandybuck
and Peregrin Pippin
Took, but also the
hobbits chief allies and
travelling companions:
Aragorn, a Human
Ranger; Boromir, a man
from Gondor;Gimli, a
Dwarf warrior; Legolas,
an Elven prince; and
Gandalf, a Wizard.
The work was initially
intended by Tolkien
to be one volume of a
two-volume set, with
the other being The
Silmarillion, but this
idea was dismissed by his
publisher. It was decided
for economic reasons to
publish The Lord of the
Rings as three volumes
over the course of a
year from 21 July 1954
to October 1955, thus
creating the now familiar
Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The three volumes were
entitled The Fellowship
of the Ring, The Two
Towers, and The Return
of the King. Structurally,
the novel is divided
internally into six books,
two per volume, with
several appendices of
background material
included at the end of the
third volume. The Lord
of the Rings has since
been reprinted numerous
times and translated into
many languages.
In order to outline the authors that I chose to use, I designed a publication thattells the story behind each author and the book that the poster is about. Thisis so that the reader can get a better understanding of the book and author, adding another dimension to the posters.
Each poster would be packaged separately, in order to be bought separately oras a set. Using the brand identity that I designed, I created a simple packagingmethod that would allow the recipient to have a poster, publication.

In order for these posters to be available, they would be sold in waterstones. For this i designed the layout for the shop windows, incorporating the brandidentity and each poster design. Whilst there, using the tote bag you would beable to not only purchase the posters but the accompanying books as well.
