Briefs

1. Create a 12 vinyl cover design for an Evian Christ track called Duga-3. The design must represent the 10Hz tapping sound of the Duga-3 transmission.

2. Create an A3 poster to promote an Odonis Odonis concert.

3. Create a piece of work individually for no reason other than the process of creativity and artistic freedom. Must be a 2D object and 23 x 16 cm.

Context

DR ME is a creative studio based in Manchester. Their practice involves making tactile images and collages so that happy accidents are made. In groups of two, we had to respond to three typical briefs that DR ME would work on in one day.

Reference Imagery/Research

After listening to the track by Evian Christ for the first brief, we were reminded of propellers from a plane, and the sound that is heard when dominoes fall over, so used this to inspire the cover art for the LP. We also looked at different mark making techniques which inspired the Odonis poster. This was again inspired by the track as it was quite an aggressive beat, so haphazard mark making was a visual representation of that.

Idea Development - Brief 1

After listening to the Evian Christ track, two different visual interpretations of it were drawn by hand and then scanned and manipulated to make a mix of dominoes and splintering propellers. These were then further fragmented to make it more abstract.

Idea Development - Brief 2

This was created individually, using Indian ink and a straw to make the circle shapes. The hand made effect was carried over to the type, using a stencil to make the titles. This was then scanned and manipulated digitally to create a fluid but rough look inspired by the music of Odonis Odonis.

Idea Development - Brief 3

This was the personal artwork response made from the original dominoes drawing with other patterns drawn over the top in different colours.
